PROGRAMME MANAGER
Three - year contract
Unit/Directorate: Research Capacity Development
Region : Cape Town

A post exists in the Division of Research Capacity Development (RCD) of the South African Medical Research Council. The incumbent will be responsible for programmatic management of the whole RCD portfolio including monitoring and evaluation, scientific analysis & scientific writing. The incumbent will also be responsible for compliance oversight (administrative, financial & legal). Strategically the incumbent must develop and prepare 1st drafts of important RCD submissions (e.g. to Quarterly Board and Executive Management Committee). They will be responsible for developing a marketing strategy of RCD and input into overall RCD strategy. The incumbent must develop an impact assessment strategy for RCD work and ensure that this is communicated internally and to the public on a regular basis.
 
 
Core Requirements:
  • Masters Level qualification or higher
  • 7 years post qualification relevant experience including in the specialized area of Grants (and Scholarships) Management
  • Managing the process of awarding of Grant funding to scientists conducting research: Evidence of experience in this specialized area of research management
  • Project management: Evidence of knowledge of Project management skills and principles
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Grants management systems: Exposure to Scholarship and Grants Management systems
  • Data and analysis: A portfolio of evidence of high level qualitative and quantitative analysis of Grants (and or Scholarships) data
  • Programmatic evaluation:  Evidence of appraisal, risk mitigation and making of recommendations in Grant programmes.
  • Good scientific writing: Evidence of scientific report writing
  • RFAs: Evidence of successful management of the full process of a Grant funding RFA

  • Computer literacy
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and communication skills
  • Project management skills
  • Program management skills
  • Understanding of the public health research environment
  • Good knowledge of and/or experience in business and/or legal wrt Research Management and Capacity development environment
  • Ability to provide specialist knowledge or advice or make recommendations as it pertains to the projects and/or programs
  • Understanding of the program projects, people, financial and project management principles.
 
Added advantage:
  • PhD preferably in a science discipline
  • Program and project administrative coordination – high level tracking funding vehicles (Scholarships and Grants incl) in terms of submission of reports and outputs and tracking financials (payments), including extracting and collating outputs in respect of scholarship and grants.
  • Association with a professional organization relevant to research management



A salary in the region of R749 401 per annum, cost-to-company will be negotiated in consideration of experience and qualifications.
