CLINICAL TRIAL NURSE
One-Year Contract
Unit/Directorate: HIV Prevention Research Unit
Region: Durban Office

The SAMRC’s HIV Prevention Research Unit (HPRU) requires dedicated, qualified and experienced clinical trial nurses to work on HIV and COVID 19 studies/ clinical trials. The Nurse will conduct HIV pre and post-test counseling, risk reduction counseling, medical history taking, clinical assessments and procedures, collection of biological specimens and perform detailed record keeping according to study protocols.
Given the current Global pandemic, the HPRU is also currently committed to conducting COVID-19 related research work, which will also be a part of the scope of duties and responsibilities of the successful candidate.
Responsibilities:
- Triage/Symptom screening of study staff and study participants for COVID-19 related symptoms and relevant reporting and documentation thereof.
- Perform relevant clinical assessments and examinations (including physical and pelvic evaluations)
- Obtain detailed medical history
- Collect protocol-required specimens (blood, urine, nasal/naso-pharyngeal swabs/ washes, and other biological specimens)
- Conduct participant interviews and administer study questionnaires
- Provide HIV pre-test and post-test counseling and risk reduction counseling
- Provide family planning education and associated counseling
- Administer family planning and study product to participants
- Make relevant participant referrals to local health care providers as required
- Follow up of participants including telephonic contacts and home visits as required.
- Conduct off- site participant visits via a mobile clinic including participant home and hospital visits as required.
- Good and accurate documentation including good record keeping
- Manage clinical consumables and equipment (equipment calibration, ordering and control of clinic stock)
- Monitor and maintain a trolley of emergency supplies and equipment at the research site
- Capture data using an electronic data capture process
- Conduct regular quality control checks to ensure accuracy of clinical data collection and good data quality
- Carry out research administrative duties.
- Training of staff as required
Core Requirements:
- Nursing degree/diploma
- Registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse
- Three years’ nursing experience of which two years must have been in the HIV/AIDS field
- Proof of certification in Primary Health Care (Section 38a) in assessing the provision of STI treatment
- Experience and training in midwifery and reproductive health
- Proven experience in phlebotomy and biological specimen collection
- Intermediate level computer literacy (Microsoft Office)
- Language proficiency in isiZulu and English
Advantageous:
- Previous experience in conducting clinical research trials.
- Evidence of training in Good Clinical Practice and ability to apply good clinical practice and human subject protection in clinical trials.
- Ability to work independently and productively
- Efficient organizational skills
- Training in family planning and knowledge of ARV treatment, adherence and counseling
- Knowledge and experience with Implant insertion/removal and/or IUCD insertion
- BLS Training (Basic Life Support)
- Training, experience and certification in HIV Counselling and Testing
- Willingness to work outside normal working hours when required.
A salary in the region of R384 657 per annum, cost-to-company, will be negotiated in consideration of experience and qualifications.
