DUTY CONTROLLER
GRADE: C4
TYPE: PERMANENT
OFFICE: SWR/MRCC OFFICE
The above position will report to the MRCC Operations Supervisor
(SAR reporting line is directly to the MRCC Chief as per SASAR Act)
JOB PURPOSE
To give full and complete effect to MRCC operational activities as per the SASAR ACT, by providing assistance to vessels in distress and to coordinate the search for, and the rescue of survivors of vessel accidents/incidents in accordance with the National SAR Plan and MRCC Operational Procedures. To further maintain maritime domain awareness (MDA) by monitoring maritime traffic around the South African coast and advise Principal Officers of developing situations or reported incidents within their areas of responsibility.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Coordinating of SAR incidents and Medical Evacuations from vessels according to SAR best practices, procedures, and legislation.
- Monitoring of operational communications for Distress, Urgency and Safety communications.
- Overseeing Maritime Assistance Services and rendering assistance when necessary.
- Perform duties and function to maintain a proper Maritime Domain Awareness making necessary notifications as and when required.
- Carry out duties pertaining to the ISPS function of the MRCC.
- Carry out general administrative duties within the operations room.
- Conduct SAR training as required.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
- Timeous, appropriate response to emergencies and Operational readiness.
- Accurate and timely transfer of information.
- Accuracy of data capturing and record keeping.
- Good English Communication skills.
- Computer literacy.
- Strong mathematical and numerical skills.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12 with Mathematics, Geography and English.
- NQF level 6 (National Diploma) in Maritime or related studies.
- 5-7 years of relevant and related experience of which 2 of which should be at supervisory level
- Understanding of the Maritime Search and Rescue environment.
It must also be noted that this position operates in a shiftwork environment (12-hour shifts or as determined by the Organization). Access to reliable transport would be beneficial to the successful candidate.
