Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Postgraduate Qualification (Master’s or MBA preferred) in Public Administration, Business Leadership, Law, or a related field.
  • Qualification in Maritime Studies will be a distinct advantage.
 
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE
  • Minimum 7 to 10 years' experience of progressive senior or executive leadership experience.
  • Proven track record in a complex public or private sector environment, with experience in maritime, ports, transport, or regulatory sectors being highly desirable.

Job Description
Job Purpose
  • Operation of propulsion, auxiliary machinery and maintenance of the vessel, its machinery and equipment in compliance with the Chief Engineer's and Second Engineer's instructions.
  • Engine room Watchkeeping Officer
  • Perform other routine and maintenance activities, including breakdown maintenance, as directed by Second Engineer / Chief Engineer.
  • The Third Engineer shall report to the Second Engineer / Chief Engineer such defects, non-conformances and other matters, which could affect safe fuel and sludge operations, or could present a risk of health and safety or pollution, quality to work or operational efficiency
 
Key Performance Areas
  • Perform work routines in his/her area of responsibility and as directed by Second Engineer / Chief Engineer.
  • Ensure that the generator engines are well maintained for optimum performance and fuel consumption. Any breakdown, failure or deviation should be brought to the attention of the Chief Engineer and Second Engineer
  • Check stock of Generator & fuel injector spare parts to ensure that minimum requirements can be always kept.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness in the generator engine room(s) and in other work areas.
  • Work in conjunction with Third Navigational Officer to check and maintain emergency equipment inside machinery spaces.
  • Ensuring that chemicals are used in a safe and responsible manner as per Material Safety Data Sheet instruction.
  • To instruct and supervise on the vessel in the use of safety, environmental protection, firefighting, first aid and life-saving equipment.
  • Safe efficient and cost-effective operations, maintenance and repair of the vessel and technical installations in accordance with the Chief Engineer's & Second Engineer's instructions, relevant legislation, and the Company's SMS.
  • The Third Engineer shall keep the Chief Engineer, the Shipboard Management Team and other functions on board well informed so that they can co-ordinate and control activities thereby maximising safety, quality and environmental protection.
  • To take such measures to protect all persons, the environment, the vessel, her equipment, and cargo as deemed necessary by the observance of good seamanship and the circumstances of the case.
  • Conducting his duties in the best interest of the company and as directed by the Second Engineer / Chief Engineer
 
Job Requirements
The ideal candidate
  • Be a South African citizen and have a valid passport.
  • Holds a valid SAMSA Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Officer in charge of an Engineering Watch (STCW Reg III/1)
  • At least 1 (one) year experience as a third engineering officer
  • Holds a valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (without restrictions or limitations).
  • Technical and problem-solving skills, including technical report writing.
  • Resolve environmental concerns and improve procedures relating to pollution prevention.
  • Realise the need for management systems and procedures, particularly in areas of emergency, malfunction safety back up, contingency planning and protection of the environment.

Job Purpose
  • Keep a vigilant watch by sight and sound in the engine room, when on Engine Room Watchkeeping duties and reporting to the Officer of the Watch (OOW) when anything is of concern.
  • In-port watchkeeping under supervision of the Officer of the Watch (OOW), tend to the efficient running and operation of the engine room as required.

  • Engine room watchkeeping duties, as per the Chief Engineer standing orders and company procedures.
  • Maintenance and upkeeping of the engine room as directed by the Chief-and/or Second Engineer.
  • Carry out bunkering and fuel operations by monitoring soundings and flow rates as directed.
  • Carry out operational maintenance of all deck machinery.
  • Carry out gas-freeing and venting of tanks, including cleaning thereof.
  • Partake in the general upkeep of the engine room and associated spaces.
  • Sounding of relevant tanks on a regular basis as per instruction from the Chief-and/or Second Engineer.
  • Assist in the monitoring of loading of HFO or IFO, MDO/GO and Lube Oil Bunker

Job Description
JOB PURPOSE
  • The Second Engineer is second in command of the Engineering Department and is in all respects responsible for conducting his duties in the best interest of the company
  • The Second Engineer shall keep himself continuously informed of all matters concerning operation, maintenance and repair enabling him to take over from the Chief Engineer in cases of necessity and/or emergency.
 
FUNCTION
  • Perform engineer room watch-keeping duties when required including the maintenance of all machinery on deck, including the engine room in his area of responsibility as required by the Planned Maintenance System and as directed by Chief Engineer.
  • Management of stores, spares, lube oils and chemicals including monitoring the consumption, inventory management to ensure minimum requirements are met and checking deliveries from suppliers.
  • To instruct and supervise on the vessel the maintenance and use of safety, environmental protection, firefighting, first aid and life-saving equipment.
  • Preparing and monitoring work plans for other engineers and engine ratings. Periodically monitor the work / rest hour planning for all engineers and engine ratings to ensure that the rest hour requirements are being complied with.
  • Ensure that his individual work and rest hour planning is done periodically, and rest hour requirements are complied with to avoid fatigue.
  • Motivation of engineers and crew, and creation of a safe working environment onboard including optimal utilization of resources allocated.
  • The use of environmentally friendly cleaning materials and ensuring that chemicals are used in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Operation of propulsion and auxiliary machinery and maintenance of the vessel, its machinery and equipment in compliance with the Chief Engineer's instructions.
  • Issuing appropriate orders and instructions in a clear and simple manner.
  • Understand the importance of briefing and debriefing to ensure efficient teamwork and develop the skills and confidence of the more junior members of the team.
  • Training of supervised personnel which includes:
    • Orientation.
    • Health and safety.
    • Environmental protection.
    • Use of manuals and procedures.
    • Proper use of tools and equipment.
    • Standard maintenance and operating practices.
    • Familiar with the latest MARPOL requirements and legislation
    • Compliance with International Health & Safety Regulations
