CHIEF HERITAGE OFFICER
5 (Five) Years Fixed Term Contract
[Performance Based]
Salary Package:
R 1 356 769 - R 2 035 153 (TCTC)
The purpose of the job is to enhance strategic alignment at RIM in order for the organization to grow and fulfil its mission, vision and strategic goals as a multi-layered cultural institution (national heritage & world heritage site and marine protected area.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the incumbent will be responsible to ensure that the strategic goals and objectives of Heritage Department are aligned with RIM’s objectives as outlined in the Integrated Conservation Management Plan (ICMP) and the Business Operating Model. To provide outstanding leadership for the department to deliver services and functions in accordance with the organisation’s strategic objectives, policy, budgets, asset management plans and statutory requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve on the Executive Management Committee
Provide strategic leadership to the Department.
Enhance the internal processes and infrastructure that will enable the smooth running of various units with the Department.
Prepare performance reports and present at Council, Department of Sports Arts & Culture, Treasury, Parliament, and UNESCO and other platforms.
Provide Strategic management in accordance with the requirements of a World Heritage Site.
People management and staff development
Financial management in accordance with the PFMA, Treasury regulations etc.
Heritage & Research, Collections Management (Mayibuye Archives), Conservation & related compliance, Environmental management, Public heritage and education, policy development, compliance with National & International legislations and protocols.
Performance Management and Evaluation
Oversee implementation of the Integrated Conservation Management Plan
Ensure compliance with museum code of ethics and standards in respect of site maintenance, visitor management, interpretation, collections, and exhibitions.
Requirements:
A Masters Degree in Heritage/Museum Studies, History, Science or equivalent
A business qualification will be an added advantage.
Experience, Technical skills & Core Competencies:
At least 10 years’ relevant experience of which 5 years should senior management level
Knowledge and understanding of South African History, Art and/or Natural History
Knowledge and understanding of national heritage legislation and international museum organisations
Knowledge of UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention
Knowledge of the Heritage Tourism Sector
Proven leadership, Strategic planning and policy development skills
People management skills

Valid driver’s licence.
