Job Description
Media Technology Engineer (Grade 13)
The School of Journalism and Media Studies invite suitably qualified candidates to join their team

Main Objectives
To support the media production activities of the students and staff of the School of Journalism and Media Studies through effective and efficient support of technology operations and resources.  To install and sustain studio facilities and equipment to ensure optimum, functional, secure and available facilities.
 
The Requirements
3-year degree/diploma or equivalent (NQF Level 7) in Electrical Engineering (LC), Computer Systems or IT, with 5 years relevant experience (does not have to be concurrent and can be made up of in-house training, internship, project work whilst studying etc.), in broadcast engineering, related electronics or IT field, including the following:
  • Previous experience in a digital broadcast environment;
  • Experience in broadcast equipment installations, commissioning, troubleshooting and maintenance ;
  • Experience in media production in a computerised environment, including workflow and file management;
  • Essential understanding of IT network infrastructure;
  • Experience in the administration of computer-based media catalogues or digital asset management software would be an advantage;
  • Experience in working with non-linear editing systems will be advantageous.

Senior Lecturer (Science Extended Studies Programme Coordinator)(Grade: SL)
CHERTL- Extended Studies Unit
CHERTL – Extended Studies Unit invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team. 
 
The Department - Description of the Department
The work of CHERTL involves the development of academic staff as professional educators, the promotion and assurance of quality in teaching and learning, and the development of student learning in conjunction with academic departments, the latter more directly through the work of the Extended Studies Unit (ESU). In addition CHERTL also functions as an academic department of Rhodes University focused on Higher Education as a field of study and the development of teaching and learning in higher education.
The Centre conducts research on teaching and learning in higher education and offers formal programmes in Higher Education Studies contributing to the development of quality teaching and learning. The Centre is also responsible for promoting service-learning within the institution, for the administration and development of the New Generation of Academics (nGAP), for enhancing the quality of short courses and supporting tutor coordinators.
The scope of CHERTL’s work moves beyond the institution, playing an active role at national and international levels. CHERTL contributes significantly to the national higher education landscape, both through the offering of formal qualifications at other institutions as well as through representation on national bodies such as the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA) and the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC).

Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), community engagement, and professional involvement in their field beyond the university, recognizing differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties.  Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty, and/or University levels.

The Science Extended Studies program (SESP) has three courses: Mathematics Foundation (MAT 1F), Computer Skills for Science (CSS 1S), and Introduction to Science Concepts and Methods (ISCM). While the mathematics course is in the Mathematics Department, the other two are in the Extended Studies Unit. 

The Requirements
  • A PhD degree in Science or Science Education. An educational qualification is highly recommended.
  • Ability to augment and teach first-year disciplinary (science) knowledge and the Scientific Literacies of the ISCM course.
  • Extensive teaching, tutoring, or facilitation experience in higher education is required.
  • Experience teaching on an extended curriculum programme would be a distinct advantage.
  • Staff Mentoring and supervision experience would be an advantage.
  • At least a good level of research is required.
  • Track record of administration, management, and leadership roles at a formal level.

Main Objectives
To provide specialist technical, administrative and operational support to the Manager of the Grounds & Gardens Section.
 
The Requirements
A relevant tertiary qualification (at least an NQF level 6) in related fields of Horticulture, Landscape Technology or Parks & Recreation Management, Building Construction or Management Diploma/Degree plus approximately 4 years’ of relevant experience where e such experience includes: -
  • Previous experience having worked in either a large public parks and gardens or horticultural services unit
  • Previous supervision and/or management experience (at least 3 years’) of having supervised and/or managed
  • Project management experience would be an advantage
  • A valid Code B Drivers’ License
