Main Objectives
Responsible for the effective management of student life, support, and development ensuring that the Division provides meaningful support and interventions to enhance the students experience and holistic well-being at Rhodes University. Supports the Director in developing students’ leadership potential and ensuring that there is an effective and functioning student governance. Supports the Director in managing the day-to-day operational activities of the Division of Student Services and Development (DSSD) and manages the Residence and Oppidan system, ensures that residences are suitable for living and learning. The incumbent is further responsible for policy development and compliance, training, and development as well as planning and compilation of reports. Supports students with disabilities and oversees effective communication with students and other stakeholders.
The requirements
Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) with a social science major, with approximately 7 years’ relevant working experience where such experience includes: -
Previous experience within the higher education sector that has required a high level of interaction with students, dealing with issues and challenges that face students
Previous supervisory and/or management experience
Previous experience in dealing with people with disabilities
Previous experience in the residence system would be an added advantage

Principal Technical Officer (Grade 12)

The office of the Department of Geology invite suitably qualified candidates to join their vibrant team.
Main Objectives
The purpose of the job is the management and administration of technical services to the Department. This includes managing the staff and the infrastructure in the laboratories, workshops and vehicle pool within the department. Also responsible for the general infrastructure of the building.
The requirements
A relevant degree / Technical Diploma (NQF level 7) in Geology, Mineralogy, Geotechnical Engineering, or equivalent, with 4 years’ relevant experience where such experience includes:
- Previous technical experience, preferably in geology, engineering and/or a relevant science field including experience in working in labs and workshops
- Previous general maintenance experience and/or ability
- Previous supervision experience
- Previous experience working with budgets
- A valid driver’s licence is necessary along with a valid PDP licence and first aid certificate are conditions of employment for this post. Candidates that are not in possession of the necessary licences and first aid certificate will be expected to obtain them during their probation period. The Institution will be responsible for the costs involved in obtaining the necessary licences and first aid certificate. Failure to obtain the necessary licences and first aid certificate will mean that the appointment of the incumbent cannot be confirmed and the employment contract will be terminated.

Job Description
Rhodes University invites applications of eligible candidates at the level of Professor or Associate Professor on a permanent basis who are prepared and eligible to serve concurrently as the Dean of the Faculty of Law on a part-time basis. The term of the Dean is normally 5 years. The successful candidate will be appointed as a permanent academic staff member at the level of Professor or Associate Professor and as Dean on a part-time basis. Once their term as Dean has been concluded (and if not re-elected as Dean) the successful candidate will be employed as an academic on a full-time basis.
The Protocol for the Election of an external Dean involves an election process by the members of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Law based on the vision and motivation prepared by candidates and a selection process conducted in accordance with the Recruitment and Selection Policy of the institution.
Requirements
For appointment as a Professor or Associate Professor, a PhD in law, with at least 10 years’ experience either as an academic and/or researcher or in legal practice/commerce, and a successful track record in the following areas: -
- Own research, preferably having led initiatives at the departmental/Faculty level to improve research within the department/Faculty, but meritorious applied research outputs outside of the academic sector may also be considered.
- Supervision of post-graduates, up to PhD level, with a keen understanding of the supervisor role would be a distinct advantage.
- Teaching at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, preferably having led initiatives at the departmental/Faculty level to review and improve curriculum and assessment in the department/faculty, or engagement with teaching and learning within the legal profession/commerce while working in the profession/commerce.
- Leadership and management roles at the departmental or faculty level, having led initiatives at the departmental/Faculty level to review current functioning or explore new processes or taken responsibility for large projects, or similar experience in responsible leadership roles in the legal profession/commerce.
