The Department
The Department is situated within the Faculty of Commerce, primarily servicing students reading for the BBusSc, BCom, and BSc (InfSys) degrees.  The Department was first established at Rhodes University in 1980 as a sub-department of the Department of Business Administration (now Management).  Today, it is a flourishing, independent Department with a full undergraduate and post-graduate program.


Information Systems is a two-year major that attracts numerous students intent on pursuing careers in either Information Systems or Accounting.  All students are required to have completed a first-year semester course in computing offered by the Department of Computer Science before registering for Information Systems.


The Department offers courses at the second, third, and fourth (honors) year levels, as well as Masters and PhD degrees by thesis.

Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for the dissemination of knowledge (teaching and learning), creation of knowledge (research) and community engagement, recognising that there are differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties.  Academics are also expected to assume some administrative, management and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty and/or University level. 


In addition, a Professor and Associate Professor are to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning; research and community engagement as well as to contribute towards the governance of the institution. This leadership contribution of the Professor should be evidenced at the departmental, Faculty and institutional levels.


The Requirements 
Professor
  • PhD in Information Systems or equivalent.
  • Professional experience in Information Systems or equivalent.
  • At least ten years of teaching experience are required at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including Master’s and PhD levels.
  • Experience teaching Information Systems in one or more of the following disciplinary areas: Primary (Programming, Databases, Data Analytics, SQL, Information Systems Security; User experience (UX); Digital ethics; Systems Analysis).
  • Research supervision of Master’s and PhD degrees to completion is required.
  • An established research group/area.
  • International profile in discipline.
  • Track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).
  • A willingness to head the department will be an advantage.

The Department -The Centre for Biological Control
The Centre for Biological Control in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at Rhodes University comprises a consortium of research institutions, including the Universities of Cape Town, Fort Hare, Mpumalanga, Pretoria and the Witwatersrand; Citrus Research International, and the Agricultural Research Council. The centre’s research focuses on understanding the ecological dynamics of invasive alien species, and agricultural pests, with particular focus on aquatic and terrestrial plants and pests of the fruit industry. Through this research the centre works towards developing biological control methods that are safe, effective, and sustainable.


Main Objectives
Research is the main focus, and teaching is not a core function.  Where the researchers are on contract, raising funds for their employment, contract research shall be regarded as equivalent to more traditional forms of research.
In assessing the candidate’s scholarship for promotion, consideration will be given to the individual's track record.  While disciplinary differences are considered, the candidate must demonstrate a standing within the discipline based on their research and student research.  This could mean that the individual has demonstrated leadership, made a major contribution to research projects, and been the lead author on publications or has demonstrated a consistent individual contribution in several publications throughout their academic career.

The Department - Description of the Department
The work of CHERTL involves the development of academic staff as professional educators, the promotion and assurance of quality in teaching and learning, and the development of student learning in conjunction with academic departments, the latter more directly through the work of the Extended Studies Unit (ESU). In addition CHERTL also functions as an academic department of Rhodes University focused on Higher Education as a field of study and the development of teaching and learning in higher education.
The Centre conducts research on teaching and learning in higher education and offers formal programmes in Higher Education Studies contributing to the development of quality teaching and learning. The Centre is also responsible for promoting service-learning within the institution, for the administration and development of the New Generation of Academics (nGAP), for enhancing the quality of short courses and supporting tutor coordinators.
The scope of CHERTL’s work moves beyond the institution, playing an active role at national and international levels. CHERTL contributes significantly to the national higher education landscape, both through the offering of formal qualifications at other institutions as well as through representation on national bodies such as the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA) and the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC).

Main Objectives

While the mathematics course is in the Mathematics Department, the other two are in the Extended Studies Unit. 

The Requirements
  • A PhD degree in Science or Science Education. An educational qualification is highly recommended.
  • Ability to augment and teach first-year disciplinary (science) knowledge and the Scientific Literacies of the ISCM course.
  • Extensive teaching, tutoring, or facilitation experience in higher education is required.
  • Experience teaching on an extended curriculum programme would be a distinct advantage.
  • Staff Mentoring and supervision experience would be an advantage.
  • At least a good level of research is required.
  • Track record of administration, management, and leadership roles at a formal level.

  • A record of working with policymakers and practitioners in the water sector.
  • Proven record of research administration, leadership, and people management.

Associate Professor Researcher:

  • A sustained and extensive publication record in appropriate scholarly and accredited journals. With evidence of lead authorship on some of the papers.

  • Evidence of transdisciplinary research practice and of working across multiple disciplines.
  • A sustained record of attendance and presentation in local and preferably international conferences.
  • A record of working with policymakers and practitioners in the water sector.

The Requirements
Senior Lecturer:
  • A PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies.
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required.
  • Experience teaching in the following disciplinary areas: Acting (practice and theory), Contemporary Performance (practice and theory), Writing for Theatre and Performance (practice and theory).
  • Evidence of research supervision of at least Master’s degrees to completion required.
  • Evidence of practice-based research.
  • Evidence of community engagement.
  • Emerging national profile in the discipline and credible publication record in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).
 
Associate Professor:
  • A PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies.

The Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team. The Department needs capacity to teach both Mathematics and Life Skills Education and fill critical teaching roles in our Bachelor of Education (Foundation Phase) courses. Applicants will be selected based on their collective capacity to fill the department's needs. 
 
The Department
The Rhodes University Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education (PECE) comprises staff and students committed to educational and socio-economic redress and transformation within the challenging post-colonial context of South Africa and our continent. Integral to these ideals is our commitment to supporting multilingualism, literacy and numeracy, interdisciplinarity, extensive subject knowledge inclusive of Indigenous and other situated knowledge, creative and innovative classroom pedagogies (such as play-based and experiential learning), and critical assessment practices. We strive to develop competent, creative, and reflexive Foundation Phase teachers who understand and can adapt their teaching for different learning contexts. Our expanding programs in leadership and management, creative arts, mathematics education, multilingualism, STEAM Education, and Education for Sustainable Development lead and contribute to international research programs and attract high-quality researchers from around Africa. These researchers explore enabling teaching and learning processes and practice engaged research, in which they develop scholarly solutions for contextually relevant education challenges and address local and global sustainability education needs. Our postgraduate scholars are supported by a long-standing series of research design courses, doctoral weeks, and research schools.
 
Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), community engagement, and professional involvement in their field beyond the university, recognizing differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties.  Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty, and/or University level.

In addition, a Professor and Associate Professor are to provide academic leadership in the following areas:
teaching and learning, research, professional involvement in the field, and community engagement, as well as
to contribute towards the institution's governance. This professor's leadership contribution should be evidenced at the departmental, faculty, and institutional levels.
 
The Requirements
Senior Lecturer:
A PhD in Education and at least three years of primary school teaching with some experience in primary teacher education.
  • Considerable teaching experience and research in one of the following: Mathematics Education and/or Life Skills Education.
  • Teaching experience in one of the following areas: Education Studies, Psychology in Education, Sociology in Education, Philosophy in Education, Curriculum, and Pedagogy would be an advantage.
  • Research and experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Education would be advantageous.
  • Research supervision of at least Masters degrees.
  • Emerging national research profile in the field of primary education.
  • Track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles
 
Lecturer:
A Master of Education in primary school education with at least three years of primary school teaching experience. Progress toward a PhD would be an advantage.
  • Teaching experience in one of the following: Mathematics Education and/or Life Skills Education.
  • Tutoring and facilitation experience in a Higher Education Institution or other teacher education institution would be an advantage.
  • An interest in teaching in one of the following areas: Education Studies, Psychology in Education, Sociology in Education, Philosophy in Education, Curriculum, and Pedagogy.
  • Track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal)
