Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology
 
The Department of Anthropology invite suitably qualified candidates to join their team.
 
The Requirements
  • A PhD in Physical/Biological Anthropology. Candidates who have evidence of their PhD being under examination may also be considered.
  • Some teaching experience is required. The incumbent should be acquainted with online/blended teaching, testing, and marking or be willing to acquire these skills immediately once in the job through workshop attendance or other developmental opportunities.
  • Ability to teach and research in some or all of the following disciplinary areas: Physical/Biological Anthropology, including Forensic Anthropology. Experience in teaching quantitative research methods is highly desirable.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate students is required.
  • Research supervision at Hons, Master's and PhD levels as per qualification will be required once in the job. Candidates with post-graduate supervision experience would be at an advantage.
  • An anthropologist with interdisciplinary work in the sciences and humanities will be advantageous.
  • Approaches to teaching & learning and research, emphasising engagement with communities, will be an advantage.
  • Some evidence and experience in conducting research.
  • Some record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for teaching and learning, the creation of knowledge (research), professional involvement, and community engagement, recognising differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty, and/or University levels.
In addition, a Professor and an Associate Professor are to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning; research; and community engagement, as well as to contribute towards the leadership and management of the institution.
 
The Requirements
Senior Researcher
  • A PhD in Literary Studies in English/English Literature Education is required
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience (including Literary Studies/literature education) at the undergraduate level is required
  • Evidence of research supervision of at least a master’s degree to completion is required
  • An emerging national profile in the discipline and a credible publication record in peer-reviewed publications are required
  • A track record of administration, management and/or leadership is required
 
Associate Professor
  • A PhD in Literary Studies in English/English Literature Education is required
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience (including Literary studies/literature education) across undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required
  • Evidence of research of master’s degree (to completion) and PhD degrees (could be in progress) is required. Supervising PhD degrees to completion is an advantage
  • A national and merging international profile in the discipline a substantial publication record in peer-reviewed publications is required
  • An extensive track record of administration, management, and leadership is required

The Oppenheimer Research Chair in Environmental Justice for Inland and Coastal Fisheries invite suitably qualified candidates to join their team.
 
Main Objectives
To provide effective and efficient financial and administrative control and reporting for the designated research group (Oppenheimer Chair) per the University’s and funders’ policies and procedures, and to produce accurate and timeous financial reports prepared per university and funders’ guidelines. Provide efficient and practical support to a large research group working in a socially sensitive research area, including several academics, researchers, post-docs, and postgraduate students.
 
The Requirements
Grade 12 plus approximately four years’ relevant experience where such experience includes: -
  • Previous experience which demonstrates a thorough understanding of financial management and accounting principles, with the ability to consolidate sets of accounts in the required format/s in an electronic environment
  • Experience in administering and/or hosting multi-institutional and multi-national meetings/conferences.
  • The ability to investigate and reconcile multiple accounts is essential
  • Previous experience in working within a computerised accounting environment and having worked with Excel at an advanced level
  • Previous experience in working with word processing (including being able to create and maintain databases), e-mail and the Internet
  • Previous experience in setting up and maintaining filing and administrative systems
  • Previous experience in the use of social media for marketing purposes, designing websites, and graphics will be an advantage
  • Candidates who have Personal Assistance experience and/or media management would be an advantage

Manager: Payroll (Grade 15)
Finance Division
The Finance Division invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team. 

Main Objectives
To ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Payroll Section within the Finance Division. The Payroll Manager plays a pivotal role in the accurate and timely processing of payroll and related transactions, in line with the Payroll Governance Framework, to ensure good governance and sound controls to comply with legislation, policies, and procedures. In addition, the Payroll Manager, in consultation with the People and Culture Division and the I&TS Division, leads continuous improvements of payroll-related business processes and systems aligned to the Payroll Governance Framework, ensuring more efficient and effective, strengthening controls, and contributing to the objectives of the University.
 
The Requirements
A relevant B. Degree (NQF Level 7) plus approximately 6 years’ relevant experience, where relevant experience includes: -
  • Working in a Finance/Accounting environment with proven experience in payroll processing of a large employee base of at least a thousand and multiple payrolls (ideally monthly and weekly).
  • Previous payroll systems experience, preferably VIP
  • Previous experience ensuring compliance in line with prevailing legislation, specifically related to but not limited to PAYE, UIF, LRA, BCEA and relevant financial legislation
  • Previous experience working with SARS online systems, SARS-related submissions and managing SARS verifications and audits
  • At least 3 years’ experience managing a payroll team
  • Intermediate Excel skills with a willingness to learn advanced Excel
  • Experience in a Higher Education Institution will serve as an advantage
