The Campus Protection Unit invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team. 

Main Objectives
To provide a 24-hour security service to guard university property and assets and to satisfy the needs of staff, students, and parents, to provide a safe and secure environment for academic studies and activities. In addition, manage a 24-hour Security Control Room and Help Desk on campus.
 
The Requirements
Grade 12 with 3 years’ relevant experience, and registration as a security officer Grade B in terms of the Security Industry Regulations Act no 56 of 2001, with no previous Schedule criminal convictions. New entrants must produce a current Police Clearance Certificate.
Relevant experience includes: -
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience in a supervisory or team leader position.
  • Be in possession of a Supervision Certificate.
  • Previous experience in security and working within the regulations laid down by the Security Industry Regulations Act No. 56 of 2001.
  • Experience in taking statements and writing reports.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Previous University and/or College Campus experience will be an advantage.

Main Objectives
The purpose of this job is to support the Manager: Institutes and Contracts office of Research Finance in providing seamless financial administrative processes to support researchers and directors of Institutes and self-funded Units. Aspects would include: -
  • Financial administrative support to researchers in academic departments and Institutes, who have been awarded various research grants and project funding.
  • Timeous production of accurate financial reports, prepared on the basis on Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (GAAP) and International Accounting Standards (IAS), in accordance with funders specified requirements.
  • Supporting the manager by implementing the various funding mechanisms and claiming cycle processes required in managing the various income streams.
  • To keep abreast of VAT and Tax legislation, in order to ensure the correct vat treatment of externally funded projects, thereby maximising the cash-flows of research projects.
 
The Requirements
Grade 12 or equivalent PLUS approximately 4 years’ relevant experience, where such experience must include:
  • Previous experience in a pressurized accounting administrative environment where there were multiple demands and tight deadlines
  • Previous experience in working in a computerized accounting environment
  • Previous experience in preparation of financial reports for audit and/or submission to external parties
  • Previous experience in research grant financial administration would be an advantage
  • Studies towards a post matric or post matric qualification in a relevant field will an advantage

Daily, Food Services provides convenient and flexible access to a variety of value-for-money, nutritious, tasty, and well-balanced meals in an environment that is friendly, hospitable, and hygienic.


Main Objectives
To assist the Manager: Food Services in the running of Food Services operations, particularly as regards the management of staff and the implementation of food services procedures and standards to ensure high quality service delivery.  The post will contribute to the Residential Operations Division Vision & Mission Statement which in turn contributes to Rhodes University’s overall objective of being a world class institution where leaders learn.
 
The Requirements
A degree/diploma (NQF Level 7) in Hospitality Management with approximately 4 years’ relevant experience, where such experience includes: -
  • At least 3 years’ experience working with staff who are at the supervisory level.
  • At least 2 years’ experience supervising staff.
  • Approved practical training (on-the-job training in an Industrial Catering Facility) – With hands-on practical industrial cooking experience, physical stock-take, and on-the-job training of catering staff.
  • Previous experience working with up-to-date Food Services practices with high-volume food production at multiple sites.

Assistant Financial Accountant (Grade 15)
Finance Division
The Finance Division invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team. 

Main Objectives
To extract and provide supporting schedules and information for the completion of the University’s annual financial statements, prepare financial statements for University-related projects, and complete statistical returns for the SA Reserve Bank and others.  To provide a service with regard to budget preparation and budget variance investigation for the Finance Division. Maintaining the general ledger system, thereby ensuring the integrity of data and the quality of financial reporting.  To provide effective & efficient accounting/administration and control measures in accordance with the University’s policies and procedures. This includes Fixed Asset administration and Inventory accounting, various VAT and other SARS-related returns administration forms, and participation in month-end and year-end procedures, including internal and external audit requirements. 
The Financial Accounting Unit is within the Finance Division and operates within a sub-structure where its sub-units report to the Senior Manager: Financial Control.
 
The Requirements
A relevant bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Financial Accounting or Auditing plus approximately 6 years of experience in financial accounting and reporting, where such experience includes: -
  • Experience preparing financial statements, reconciliations, and audit working papers.
  • Budget preparation and variance analysis, including investigative follow-up.
  • Experience maintaining General Ledger structures and account coding.
  • Working knowledge of the VAT Act and its application, and Experience in preparing VAT schedules, reconciliations, and dealing with SARS rulings.
  • Experience coordinating external audits and managing audit documentation.
  • Advanced computer literacy, especially in accounting systems and Excel.
  • Experience with inventory and fixed asset accounting, including depreciation processes.
  • A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Exposure to statutory reporting for DHET, SARB, and Statistics South Africa, and familiarity with restricted vs unrestricted fund accounting in a university context will be an added advantage.
  • A thorough understanding and experience of VAT as it applies to Higher Education Institutions will be an advantage

Re-advertisement: Senior Researcher (SR) / Associate Professor (AP) - 5 Year Contract
Institute for the Study of the English of Africa


The Institute for the Study of the English of Africa invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.
 
Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for teaching and learning, the creation of knowledge (research), professional involvement, and community engagement, recognising differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty, and/or University levels.
In addition, a Professor and an Associate Professor are to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning; research; and community engagement, as well as to contribute towards the leadership and management of the institution.
 
The Requirements
Senior Researcher
  • A PhD in Literary Studies in English/English Literature Education is required
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience (including Literary Studies/literature education) at the undergraduate level is required
  • Evidence of research supervision of at least a master’s degree to completion is required
  • An emerging national profile in the discipline and a credible publication record in peer-reviewed publications are required
  • A track record of administration, management and/or leadership is required
 
Associate Professor
  • A PhD in Literary Studies in English/English Literature Education is required
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience (including Literary studies/literature education) across undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required
  • Evidence of research of master’s degree (to completion) and PhD degrees (could be in progress) is required. Supervising PhD degrees to completion is an advantage
  • A national and merging international profile in the discipline a substantial publication record in peer-reviewed publications is required
  • An extensive track record of administration, management, and leadership is required

Remuneration per annum (Grade SR):
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R783 243
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R1 013 469
Remuneration per annum (Grade AP):
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R936 120
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R1 203 447
