Rhodes University invites applications of eligible candidates at the level of Professor or Associate Professor on a permanent basis who are prepared and eligible to serve concurrently as the Dean of the Faculty of Law on a part-time basis. The term of the Dean is normally 5 years. The successful candidate will be appointed as a permanent academic staff member at the level of Professor or Associate Professor and as Dean on a part-time basis. Once their term as Dean has been concluded (and if not re-elected as Dean) the successful candidate will be employed as an academic on a full-time basis.
The Protocol for the Election of an external Dean involves an election process by the members of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Law based on the vision and motivation prepared by candidates, and a selection process conducted in accordance with the Recruitment and Selection Policy of the institution.

For appointment as a Professor or Associate Professor, PhD in Law or LLD preceded by an LLB-degree (preference will be given to candidates holding an LLB-degree from a South African university; or knowledge and experience of the South African legal system) with at least 10 years’ experience as an academic and/or researcher, and a successful track record in the following areas: -

- Provide intellectual and academic leadership,
- Leadership and management of people, processes and associated administration,
- Represent the Faculty both internally and externally to the institution,
The requirements
For appointment as a Professor or Associate Professor, PhD in Law or LLD preceded by an LLB-degree (preference will be given to candidates holding an LLB-degree from a South African university; or knowledge and experience of the South African legal system) with at least 10 years’ experience as an academic and/or researcher, and a successful track record in the following areas: -
- Own research, preferably having led initiatives at the departmental/Faculty level to improve research within the department/Faculty
- Supervision of post-graduates, up to PhD level, with a keen understanding of the role of supervisor
- Teaching at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, preferably having led initiatives at the departmental/Faculty level to review, improve curriculum and assessment in the department/faculty
- Leadership and management roles at the departmental or faculty level having led initiatives at the departmental/Faculty level to review current functioning or explore new processes or taken responsibility for large projects.

- Your leadership and vision for the faculty
- Your research trajectory.
- Your teaching approach and experience.

Remuneration
Rhodes University offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package.
All applications will be treated in strict confidence. This post is advertised as permanent post, but the University may opt to appoint on a fixed-term contract of not less than three-years. The University reserves the right not to proceed with the filling of the post. An application in itself does not entitle the applicant to an interview.
