Job Advert Summary
To assist the Automation Asset Manager to act as the custodian for automation plants and sub-plants of the water supply infrastructure. This individual is responsible for ensuring that these assets are specified, installed, operated, and maintained to provide expected levels of service at minimum lifecycle cost.
 
Minimum Requirements
Essential (must-have) qualifications are:
• Formal engineering qualifications (MTech, MEng, MScEng degree)
• Professional Registration with the Engineering Council of SA
• 6 to 10 years’ experience in industrial automation (measurement, control and instrumentation)engineering / infrastructure management
• Minimum of 3 years’ management experience
 
Desirable qualifications are:
• Advanced Management Programme
• Membership of a fraternal voluntary association
 
Primary Duties
• Assist the Automation Asset Manager to lead and manage all activities of the section that will result in optimal lifecycle performance of the specific category of assets
• Assist the Automation Asset Manager to develop, compile, execute and manage the section business plan that supports the departmental and divisional business plan
• Assist the Automation Asset Manager to develop and maintain generic standards for asset performance and availability, maintenance regimes, rates of deterioration, lifespan, etc.
• Provide and update plans and costs for the management of each asset, for incorporation into the integrated Asset Management Plan
• Manage and lead the process relating to the review and improvement of standards and specifications for the asset category
• Manage asset assessors and maintenance staff in:
  • Condition assessment and performance measurement of assets to agreed standards and frequencies
  • Regular audits of maintenance activities
  • Providing a maintenance support service to operating sites
• Manage, specify and review improvements to design specifications, operating and maintenance regimes.
• Review and approve specification and design of new assets to ensure lifecycle performance is adequately addressed
• Develop and prepare annual budget for Automation asset management, and practice financial management and control
• Assist the Automation Asset Manager to manage the development of staff by monitoring performance, coaching and mentoring, career path and succession planning
• Initiate and lead Automation asset management related projects
• Direct and lead technical advances and world class expertise for the category of asset
• People and resource management by monitoring performance of staff and implement succession planning
• Effective management and monitoring the section’s budget to ensure actual expenses against budgeted amount and delegate action on variances
• Create and encourage a culture of teamwork, and achievement, through the application of frequent feedback and communication with staff and promote employment equity

To develop and maintain a corporate environmental and occupational hygiene system, establish systems to mitigate all associated risks identified within the organisation and provide advice to management and operating sites to ensure alignment with best practise.
 
Minimum Requirements
  • Matric qualification is essential
  • Btech Degree in Environmental Health Management or equivalent
  • Accredited Advanced SHE Auditor would be an advantage (14001, 18001 and 9001)
  • 3 - 5 years experience Environmental Management or 2 years at a supervisory or managerial level
  • Knowledge of 14000 is essential
  • Understand the business area (activities, process, sources of emissions)
  • Understand accountabilities and roles in business areas + developed ‘customer’ network
  • Understand/identify environmental hazards associated with the business
  • Know key sensitivities in baseline environment
  • Good understanding of the Water Services act and other applicable environmental legislation.
  • Experience of EMS implementation and water sector

Primary Duties
  • Assist the sites in implementing processes to ensure construction works are conducted in accordance with environmental legislation and Corporate environmental standards.
  • Advice the sites on current and applicable environmental legislation and industry best practice
  • Provide detailed environmental support and guidance in the planning stages of a new projects.
  • Ensure environmental audits are conducted to ensure compliance against legislative and corporate environmental standards.
  • Provide support and guidance in establishing site specific environmental objectives, which are commensurate with Corporate environmental objectives, which provide practical solutions to environmental concerns.
  • Liaise with external regulatory bodies ( GDACE, DEAT etc.) in the management of environmental incidents.
  • Attend relevant environmental industry / regulatory associations / forums so as to assist in the improvement of overall environmental performance.
  • Provide relevant information for Environmental Management reviews.
  • Visit Rand Water sites and provide support to the Risk Control teams.
  • Pro-active assistance on Occupation Health, Safety and environmental matters.
  • Implement and maintain an occupational hygiene programme for all Rand Water operations.
