Operations Supervisory Development Opportunity
The Operations Department is offering developmental opportunities for potential Talent to gain practical exposure to supervisory competencies while Acting in the role of Chief Inspector.

OVERVIEW OF EXPOSURE:
Operations Supervision is a specialist competency aimed at ensuring the correct application of standards and protocols within the PPECB’s legislative mandate; transfer of skills and monitoring of consistent technical competence within the legislative framework of the PPECB.
The primary objective is to ensure compliance to all relevant procedures, protocols and Service Level Agreements within a defined geographical area.
Responsibilities:
Supervision competency:
- Supervisory roles in Inspection, Food Safety and Export Certification and/or Cold Chain functions related to the specified geographical area.
- Performance motivation of sub-ordinates within the framework of the PPECB performance motivation system.
- Ensuring adequate competency levels of staff within the Harmonization framework.
- Coordinating compliance to prescribed processes, procedures and protocols within the framework of the Agricultural Product Standards Act and/or the Perishable Products Export Control Board Act.
- Ensure correct application of quality management systems, procedures and work instructions.
- Administrative tasks and reporting related to the execution of services.
- Ensure adherence to Service Level agreements.
- Ensuring effective two-way communication internal and external.
- Inspection and certification of perishable products and/or the handling, storage and transport of perishable products.
- The successful developmental candidates will be required to be semi-functional.
Job Requirements
- CI: A tertiary qualification in an agricultural discipline with at least 7 years relevant work experience or a competent senior inspector with at least 10 years relevant work experience of which 3 years in a Senior Inspector role
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge and experience on the following: Citrus, avocados, minor products, container loading.
- Knowledge, understanding and experience of all inspection and/ or cold chain services relevant to the specified geographical area.

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS:
Applications will be considered by means of a multiple-hurdle process; consisting of pre-screening of applications; formal interviews; followed by assessments for short-listed candidates. Formal developmental feedback will be provided to unsuccessful candidates to assist them with their PDP’s (Personal Development Plans).
The candidates with the strongest performance in the above process will be appointed. There will be an Acting allowance applicable for the period. The duration of this opportunity is for approximately six months or until product volumes for the citrus season have reduced to the extent that the span of work can be easily accommodated by the permanent human resources.

Job Description
The Laboratory Analyst will be responsible for the following:
1. Implementation of Chromatographic Techniques, i.e. GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS, for the analysis of Pesticide residues in fresh produce and the accompanying interpretation and evaluation of results.
2. Coordinating the activities of the laboratory technicians and interns, and optimizing the use of the equipment in the preparative section of the laboratory.
3. Ensure service delivery to the customers - reporting of results within the documented turn-around time.
4. Method validation - addition of new matrices and/or pesticide actives.
5. Implementation of the Quality Management System (ISO17025).
6. Communication and reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
7. Self-management.
8. Minimize financial risks.
9. Management of critical consumables
Job Requirements
1. Qualification required:
Minimum qualification of a National Diploma Analytical Chemistry.
2. Experience required:
• At least 5 years of experience as a laboratory analyst working in an ISO 17025 accredited facility.
• Implementation of accredited test methods, increasing the scope of accreditation and a particular understanding of the technical processes of GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS analysis of pesticide residues.
• Interpretation and evaluation of test results, and troubleshooting
• Method validation and creation of validation reports according to EURACHEM regulations.
• Analysis of pesticide residues using the QuEChERS extraction technique.
3. Key responsibilities:
• Compliance to statutory requirements
• Coordinates the use of analytical equipment to ensure maximum through-put in the laboratory
• Maximize analytical volumes per day
• Performs Internal verification of equipment (balances, volumetric flasks, pipettes)
• Ensures that the accommodation and environmental conditions of the lab are controlled and recorded accordingly.
• Checking quality and suitability of chemicals
• Sample registration on LIMS
• Preparation of reference standards
• Preparation of daily solvents and standards
• Participation in proficiency testing schemes
• Routine preventative maintenance of the GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS instruments
• Checking and authorizing certificates of analysis for pesticide results as a SANAS approved technical signatory
• Troubleshooting - Instruments/QC samples/test results/equipment
• Attend and participate in laboratory meetings
• Assist with the clearance of non-conformances - root cause analysis
• Effective communication and reporting that leads to improved internal relationships and decisions
4. Knowledge required:
• In depth knowledge of ISO 17025, implementation and improvements.
• Method validation according to EURACHEM regulations
• Sound knowledge of GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS instrumentation - method validation
• Pesticide residue analysis using the QuEChERS extraction technique.

Job Description
Purpose of the Job:
To independently conduct inspections of various products, services and certification of various products according to the standards protocols, procedures and SOP’s as prescribed through the PPECB’s legislative mandate as well as to facilitate the competency processes and assist with training initiatives
High Level Objectives:
- To ensure product quality inspections, Export Certification and cold chain services are done in accordance with the legislative mandate.

Job Requirements
Essential:
- A Minimum Tertiary Qualification or a National Diploma/Degree in the following Sciences: Agricultural management / Crop production / Horticulture / Environmental Health / Food Technology.
- 7 years of relevant work experience within the perishable industry as a competent Inspector.
- Proven competence with 90 technical credits and 45 Soft Skills credits.
- Proven competence in 5 products of which Table Grapes, Citrus, Blueberries, Pome and Maize are compulsory.
- Practical experience and/or exposure Vegetables inspection and container loading will be advantageous.
- Thorough understanding and theoretical knowledge of the processes involved in product inspection of fresh produce, cold chain activities and food safety.
- Excellent proven experience on implementation and maintenance of all regional processes and database
- Computer Literacy.
Desirable:
- Training and mentoring experience
- Experience in the Inspection value stream
- Experience in acting in a Senior Inspector role

Job Description
The Statutory Operations Department has a vacancy for a Chief Inspector (CI) - Bothaville to ensure the correct application of standards and protocols within the PPECB’s legislative mandate. The CI position is a specialist role aimed at transfer of skills and monitoring of consistent technical competence within the legislative framework of the PPECB. The position offers the ideal opportunity for individuals to gain experience of supervision within a small team environment. The CI has the specific deliverable of ensuring compliance to all relevant procedures, protocols and Service Level Agreements within a defined geographical area. The position also offers the opportunity to influence business processes and practices within the Service Centre in which he/she is operating. The successful candidate will be required to be semi-functional which includes conducting inspections and participate in the annual relief duty plan.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Supervisory roles in Inspection, Food Safety and Export Certification related to the specified geographical area.

Job Requirements
- A tertiary Qualification or a National Diploma/Degree in the following Sciences: Agricultural management / Crop production; Horticulture; Environmental Health or o Food Technology.
- A minimum of 7 years relevant work experience. Please note: Candidates with less experience, but with proven outstanding performance will be considered in line with PPECB’s EE policy.
- Knowledge, understanding and experience of all inspection services relevant to the specified geographical area.
- Knowledge and experience of product inspection of the following products: Maize; Maize by products, Pecan nuts, Groundnuts and Cold Chain principles will be advantageous.
- Experience in Food Safety audits will be an advantage.
- Experience as acting supervisor within the inspection disciplines will be to the advantage of applicants.
