NELSON MANDELA MUSEUM
 
The Nelson Mandela Museum with two sites Bhunga and Qunu has a dynamic and enviable opportunity to serve South Africa, as stewardship of a living legacy, to share and learn the true story of Nelson Mandela in context, in ways that inspire and empower people. 
The Museum invites applications from suitably qualified, committed, competent and experienced South Africans to serve as CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER. This is an opportunity to help create a caring value driven heritage institution of knowledge and excellence. The successful individual will be based in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.

REF.: CEO 11/2021 
REMUNERATION PACKAGE: will be negotiated with successful candidate as a Total Cost to Employer on a 5 year FIXED-TERM contract
 
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: 
An opportunity exists to join the team charged with unenviable task of promoting the legacy of Nelson Mandela as Chief Executive Officer of the Nelson Mandela Museum. The Chief Executive Officer will lead the development of a long term vision and sustainable strategic direction for the museum. CEO will be required to negotiate the complex social, political and public policy context in which the museum operates, as well as managing the continued provision of a vibrant and engaging museum service.

The successful candidate will join the museum at the time of great need, when more effort to galvanise support and commitment to build a South Africa and the world of Nelson Mandela’s dreams cannot be overemphasised. The CEO will be the key advocate for the museum, required to influence a wide range of stakeholders including politicians, funders, tourism partners, international organisations and other cultural leaders. The building of collaborative relationships to support the organisation’s continued success and development in the years ahead will be an essential component of the role. 
 
The successful candidate will have an impressive track record of providing effective leadership for a complex organisation operating in the heritage, cultural, educational tourism sector or public sector. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate experience or capability of providing strategic advice and guidance to the Council, as well as developing and delivering successful stakeholder engagement. Experience of driving forward innovative change programmes will also be a key prerequisite.

As a matured independent executive with an integrative management style, he/she will establish a cohesive strategy for the entity by developing and getting involvement and enthusiasm from both private and public stakeholders. The incumbent will be responsible for leading a management team and reporting to the Council. 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 Together with the council, develop and execute a clear strategy for the museum 
 Implement priority programmes of the museum to bring strategy into action 
 Implement world class practices in management of the Heritage and cultural resources of the museum 
 Ensure sound financial management and governance as it finds expression in audit outcomes and general financial health of the organisation 
 Effective management and engagement of stakeholders including local community engagement 
 Develop and execute a sound and effective fundraising strategy and plan to mobilise resources to support museum’s programmes 
 Ensure effective management of all elements of human resources function of the museum 
 Promote the legacy of Nelson Mandela through collaborations and partnerships 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 
 Post graduate degree in Business or Public Administration or Heritage studies. A relevant Doctorate degree will be an added advantage 
 A minimum five years’ experience at senior management level in a relevant sector or with the museums, heritage, tourism and other cultural institutions 
 Excellent skills in lateral thinking, crisis management, negotiations, communications, presentation and interpersonal relationships 
 Proficiency in understanding and applying PFMA and Treasury Regulations and other laws, acts and regulatory frameworks, as well as good corporate governance and practices. 
 Good networking ability with similar industry, government, tertiary institutes and other related parties 
 Extensive local experience (international experience will be an added advantage) 
 Demonstrates the leadership values espoused by Tata Nelson Mandela 
 Valid driver’s license is essential.
