HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY 
NATIONAL MUSEUM, BLOEMFONTEIN 
Applications are invited for the position of Head: Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the National Museum in Bloemfontein. 
 
 
The Department of Archaeology is home to major collections, including Stone Age artefacts from the Orange River areas of the Gariep and Van der Kloof dams, Iron Age collections from the Free State, as well as Later Stone Age cultural material from cave sites along the southern Cape coast. 
 
Qualifications: Minimum a PHD in archaeology/ similar. 
 
Experience: 5 years’ experience working with South African Stone Age and Iron Age Archaeology. Applicants should be established researchers in Archaeology with an international publication record in accredited research journals. Knowledge of human beginnings and ancient societies that lived in Southern Africa, as well as heritage and museum experience, is highly recommended. The successful applicant will be expected to expand the research of the Department. Computer literacy and a valid driver’s license are required. 


Key Performance Areas:
• Carry out internationally competitive research with a strong emphasis on Stone Age/ Iron Age archaeology and publish results in peer- reviewed journals and provide expert services to researchers and research institutions. 
• Oversee management, accessioning and expansion of the Archaeological and Anthropology collections and effectively manage the departmental databases and laboratory. 
• Supply scientific expertise for exhibits. 
• Popularisation of the field of expertise through popular articles, lectures and talks. 
• Efficiently administer the Archaeology and Anthropology Department.
