SENIOR SCIENTIST: REGIONAL REFERENCE INSTITUTE 
Salary Range R634 703.55 – R 789 654.65 per annum (All inclusive) 
 
OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANISATION: 
The NMISA is a Type 3A Public Entity established in accordance with the Measurement Unit and Measurement Standards Act, No. 18 of 2006 (the Act). The NMISA is mandated by the Act to provide for the use of the international system of units (the SI) and other measurement units in South Africa, to maintain national measurement standards (NMS) and to determine and ensure the comparability of the NMS. THE POSITION: 
A vacancy exists for an experienced Senior Scientist in the Analytical Laboratory of the Regional Reference Institute (RRI), Applied Metrology Division, NMISA, to establish the technical capabilities of the section, research, develop, validate analytical methods, and disseminate analytical traceability to industry, government laboratories and academia, thereby supporting South African trade.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: 
• MSc degree in analytical chemistry and/or biochemistry or related equivalent field 
  • A Doctorate in Chemistry or related equivalent field qualification will be an advantage 
  • A minimum of 10 years working experience in the appropriate technical field 
  • Experience in gravimetry, titrimetric, wet chemistry and sample preparation techniques 
  • Knowledge and experience of gas and liquid chromatographic instruments coupled to various detectors including mass spectrometers. 
  • Knowledge of the estimation of uncertainty calculations and preparing of uncertainty budgets 
  • Knowledge of statistical data quality management 
  • Experience in method development and method validation 
  • Experience in various sample preparation methods including extractions, separation, and concentration techniques 
  • Proven track record in Research and development, publish and present research outputs 
  • Ability to network on the local and international level, such as presenting at international conferences 
  • Ability to prepare accurate scientific and technical reports 
  • Experience in project management 
  • Planning and execution (budgeting, proposal preparation etc.) of research projects 
  • Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 and experience with quality systems 
• Experience in training and mentoring 
  • Computer Literacy (especially using excel) 
 
MAJOR CHALLENGES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
• Research and development of new reference measurement techniques for RRI to expand the measurement capability to provide services not previously available from NMISA. 
  • Preventative maintenance of analytical instruments/equipment as well as maintenance of the Total Quality Management System. 
• Develop and validate procedures for the performance of measurements in RRI and develop new methods and systems to reduce measurement uncertainties. 
  • Present technical papers at workshops and conferences and in local or international publications, preferably peer reviewed. 
  • Initiate and contribute to technical and scientific inputs into specialist projects thereby contributing to technical excellence within the NMISA. 
• Procure the equipment required for maintenance, development, improvement, and research related activities. 
  • Training of Scientist and interns on the measurement techniques and analytical instruments. 
  • Adding new accreditation parameters and maintenance of ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation 
• Provide technical guidance and consultancy to customers, where necessary, thereby contributing to knowledge transfer to industry. 
• Participate in national technical committee activities (SANAS assessments and technical standard committees, etc.), thereby contributing to knowledge transfer to industry. 
• Provide consultation services to South Africa and internationally.
