NATIONAL HEALTH LABORATORY SERVICE (NHLS) 
The University of Cape Town (UCT), and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) invite applications for the permanent post of Professor/Associate Professor and Head of Division of Chemical Pathology in the Department of Pathology. 
 
 
The criteria for appointment 
Basic criteria: 
 MMed/FC Path in Chemical Pathology, or PhD highly relevant to the discipline of Chemical Pathology in the division at UCT 
 Minimum seven (7) years post-specialization, or or minimum of four (4) years at a senior academic management level post-qualification of PhD 
 Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Specialist Pathologist (Chemical Pathology) or an appropriate medical scientist category 
 
In addition, evidence according to the following criteria will be carefully assessed and measured for the applicant's professional and academic standing in 4 key areas: 
1. Leadership and management 
 Experience in managing an academic department in a university environment 
 Excellent skills in leadership, and innovation 
 Effective interaction with various stakeholders, and managers, at a national level 
 Excellent interpersonal skills 
2. Research & Development 
As demonstrated by: 
 International peer-reviewed publications 
 Invited presentations at national and international scientific meetings 
 National and international collaborations 
 External fund raising 
3. Teaching & Training 
 Teaching of basic or clinical medical science from undergraduate to postgraduate, specialist and PhD levels at a tertiary academic institution 
4. Clinical & Social Responsiveness 
 Experience in managing a clinical diagnostic laboratory 
 Evidence of social responsiveness with a national impact 
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and leading the Division of Chemical Pathology, according to the above-mentioned 4 pillars, by:
 Leading, managing and growing a complex, clinical and academic division (UCT and NHLS) 
 Developing a sustainable programme of research, as well as nurturing and developing the research careers of others within the Division of Chemical Pathology. This will include the acquisition of research funding, appropriate planning, and mentorship. 
 Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Chemical Pathology programmes in the Faculty. Undergraduate teaching includes medical students (MBChB programme). Post-graduate teaching includes the supervision of registrars undergoing specialist training for the FCPath and M.Med. degree in Chemical Pathology and Clinical Pathology, as well as the supervision of Honours, Masters, and Doctoral students, Intern Medical Scientists, and Postdoctoral Fellows. 
 Leading the division’s clinical and social responsiveness, such as the provision of diagnostic services offered by the Division of Chemical Pathology’s various laboratories at Groote Schuur Hospital, Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, University of Cape Town, in accordance with agreements between UCT and NHLS. 
 The Head of Division should be aware of the Division’s current strengths and will be expected to create an inclusive environment and to promote capacity development enabling transformation in the four key areas above. 
 
 


The successful candidate will be expected to be available to be Head of the Department of Pathology on a rotating basis. 
 
Appointment will be made at the level of Professor or Associate Professor in alignment with the candidate’s standing as well as the Faculty’s expectations for performance at each academic rank. 
 
The position is full-time on the establishment of the University of Cape Town, under the auspices of, and in terms of the agreements between, the University of Cape Town and the NHLS. 
 
The annual remuneration package is negotiable and includes competitive benefits.
