CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR: LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
(REF -IC/LED-01/2022)
BACKGROUND The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is looking to secure the services of an experienced and suitably qualified South African Citizen to assist our Economics and Statistical Services Unit in successfully completing a scheduled project that focuses on local economic development within a special economic zone in KwaZulu-Natal.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS A minimum Honours degree in Economics/Development Studies or related field. A Master’s Degree in Economics is a distinct advantage. At least 3 years’ experience in an economic or research related environment. Knowledge of regional and local economic development. A broad understanding of strategies and initiatives that are aimed at boosting industrial development in South Africa. Ability to use excel. Knowledge of SPSS is an advantage. Valid driver’s license.
CORE COMPETENCIES Economic Research (primary and secondary), Use of Excel tables and/or graphs; Report writing, Analysis of findings; Presentation skills; Independence; Attention to detail and thoroughness. A sense of urgency. Probing and initiative. Ability to build capacity within others.
RESPONSIBILITIES Assess and quantify the extent to which the Dube Trade Port (DTP) Special Economic Zone investors are integrated with the local economy in terms of suppliers, jobs, and any other local development outcomes. Quantify the number of SMMEs that supply input materials and services into production processes of the firms located in the zones. Assess the extent to which the DTP SEZ has contributed to increased investment, total production, export, job creation and value addition within the local and national economy. Identify the main constraints encountered by firms located within the DTP SEZ and recommend how these challenges can best be addressed. Propose major areas requiring some form of intervention to better serve the DTP SEZ.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT The successful candidate will be offered an independent contract (up to 3 months) on an hourly rate of R384 p/h.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNER: OFFICE OF THE CEO

BACKGROUND The Moses Kotane Institute is looking to appoint a suitably qualified South African unemployed youth interested in gaining experience within the research field.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have a valid Master’s degree, from an accredited tertiary institution, specializing in Economics, Geography (with GIS), Statistics, or related qualification with a clear focus on socio-economic research or social sciences. At least two years’ experience in research-writing. Proficient user in one of the following statistical software (Stata, R-package, and Python)- Assessment test will be written. A valid Driver’s license will be an added advantage.
RESPONSIBILITIES Conduct literature review, contribute towards drafting proposals, assist with leading data collection and data capturing, report writing, assist running online repositories and provide general administration support where required.
CORE COMPETENCIES Demonstrate the willingness to learn; Competent PC user and can work remotely with minimal supervision. Dynamic and highly committed to working in a fast-paced environment. Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail and ability to follow set deadlines, good verbal and writing skills; Good time and project management skills, and willing to work long hours.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT The successful candidate will be offered a 12-month fixed term contract, remunerated at R16 000.00 (TCOE)
