Introduction
Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for a Project Engineer: Mine Closure & Rehabilitation who will also assist in scoping the projects, investigating new sites and preparation of internal cost estimates and detailed designs. The primary purpose of this job is to implement, monitor and supervise Derelict & Ownerless mines projects on site, preparing monthly project reports, update on project programme and procedures. Preparing designs and specifications as well as conducting site inspections to ensure that project quality objectives are attained and that operations are undertaken according to standard specifications, statutory requirements, designs and in a safe manner.
Job description
Construction Supervision:
o Client representative on site for the projects
o Responsible for the on-site quality assurance and conformance to designs and specifications
o Ensuring compliance to statutory requirements as well as Mine Health and Safety Act requirements
o Verify the measurement and calculation of quantities for payment certificate.
o Address any on-site deviations to the scope, designs and specifications.
o Monitoring and tracking of all construction activities and programme of works and ensuring the contractor complies with all agreed policies and procedures
o Witness onsite quality tests and approve procured material.
o Compile daily diaries and progress report.
o Attend Progress Meetings and arrange and facilitate technical/coordination meetings.
Project Coordination
o Coordinate the execution of projects to ensure that the outputs / outcomes are in line with Mintek’s strategies and goals.
o Manage and assess all project documents submitted by contractors, including scoping documents, bills of quantity, and budgets.
o Proactively manage tasks and activities to ensure that problems and delays are identified early and remedial action is instituted to minimise consequences.
o Interact with key stakeholders to understand, anticipate and manage their expectations
o Compile weekly project progress and financial reports.
o Timely compilation of weekly and monthly project progress and financial reports.
Design and Documentation
o Prepare detailed mine rehabilitation designs including the production of construction drawings.
o Compile tender documents, including specifications for all applicable works ensuring that all documents accurately capture the nature, size and scope of the project.
o Manage and assess all project documents submitted by contractors, including scoping documents, bills of quantity, and budgets.
o Project initiation including desktop studies and site investigations to produce scoping reports.
o Conducting pre-feasibility studies and community engagement
o Manage specialist sub-consultants like geotechnical specialists, surveyors etc.
Stakeholder Management
o Interact with key stakeholders to understand, anticipate and manage their expectations.
o Interact and attend key meetings with law enforcement authorities and private security service providers.
o Manage relations between the contractors and mining communities, ensuring that potential areas are managed or escalated to the client accordingly.
o Security and team management for shafts installations
o Prepare audit and finding reports for D&O programme
o Budgeting and estimates for projects
o Tender and technical evaluations
o Statistical management of projects and costing.
SHEQ management
o Ensure that effective SHEQ procedures are in place so that contractors and workers operate in a safe and
healthy environment.
o Ensure compliance with applicable legislation at all sites where Mintek is operating including Mine Health and Safety Act.
o Undertake risk assessments for own projects and review and approve contractor’s monthly SHEQ reports
o Preparation of SOPs and review thereof
o Preparation of standard management forms, letters, minutes templates etc
o Contribution to the standardisation of tender documents, evaluation criteria and other key MCR documents and processes.
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- MEng or/and MSc in Earth Sciences and related fields or relevant, ideal PhD in related fields.
- Extensive knowledge of the mining industry or public sector, mining communities.
- 10 years’ experience in the project management of either mine closure and rehabilitation programme, civil engineering, concrete works and earthworks.
- Sound Knowledge and Management of Mine Closure and Rehabilitation programme.
- Maintenance of Mine Closure & Rehabilitation Databases.
- Development of Mine Closure and Rehabilitation Strategy and Masterplans.
- Sound Knowledge Project Management and Project Finance expertise.
- Sound Civil Engineering design, contract documentation and management.
- Construction Monitoring.
- Good interpersonal relations

Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
Management and execution of research projects.
- Propose and/or contribute to the strategic investment plan and implement, Contract Research and Development and other grant-funded projects (NRF, TIA, Government departments; international e.g. Horizon 2020).
- Develop written research projects proposal based on the needs of clients or specific new project ideas for innovation.
- Conduct scientific research as per scope to achieve objectives.
- Compile monthly project report progress.
- Monitor & evaluate project milestones against billing in long-running projects (annual and multiple years).
- Manage all resources involved in a project, namely budget, people and equipment.
- Ensure the completion of projects and tasks on time.
- Compile reports of investigations in the division.
- Attend scientific workshops and conference to present research work.
- Write conference papers and journal manuscripts.
- Initiate, maintain and strengthen the new and existing local and international collaboration.
- Conceptualization of research, coordinating research outputs and reports.
- Produce high quality reports, papers, book chapters and presentations.
- Supervise and co-supervise the postgraduate students and staff, MSc and PhD.
- Initiate funding for research running cost i.e. external funding (NRF, Industry etc.) and internal funds (Science vote).
- Improve quality and efficiency of processes with the interaction of stakeholders.
- Actively participate in group proficiency testing schemes to ensure that desired results are obtained.
- Participate in troubleshooting animalities and provide solutions to scientific challenges.
- Participate in the CRM production activities when required.
- Assist in compiling data for CRM production.
- Actively participates in SHEQ duties and attends all relevant meetings.
- Practices Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) by ensuring that all work areas, balance rooms and the general laboratory are kept clean.
- Strives to meet the objectives of the group by observing the quality, safety and environmental standards set out by the division.
- Works systematically and in compliance with the group’s standard operating procedures and methods to achieve accurate assays within acceptable time frames.
Minimum requirements
§ Minimum: MSc in Chemistry
§ Ideal: PhD in Chemistry
§ At least 3 years experience in technologies domain research within an RDI environment.
§ 5-10 years’ experience in the chemistry laboratory
§ 5-10 years’ experience in the research outputs
§ A minimum of 5 scientific peer reviewed publications
§ Minimum of 3 years of working experience in ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
§ Ability to troubleshoot instruments and commission new equipment.
§ Ability to develop and maintain a quality assurance system and administration thereof.
§ Professional registration (SACNASP or SACI-Corporate Member)
