Key Performance Indicators:
- Assist Head/Divisional manager to maintain and expand on project work from the mining/ metallurgical industry and related research agencies, in line with Division’s current business plans, by providing competence and professional expertise, and interacting with clients and collaborators at a technical level.
- Ascertain the needs of clients and the industry and propose appropriate project work, both research and commercial oriented.
- Lead and execute projects in which interactions with technical expertise and stakeholders (internal and external) are required at a professional level. This will involve algorithm/software development to extract appropriate information, and modelling, simulation and interpretation of mineral behaviour in processing and other environments using, primarily, image inputs from mineralogical equipment.
- Execute projects so as to meet the time scheduling agreed to with client/stakeholder, contain costs for the Division and deliver valid conclusions with technical efficiency and professionalism.
- Comply with the internal administration requirements of Mintek and MND with respect to labour and machine time capture, business governance, professional reporting, project planning and management.
- Follow protocols/workflows for optimal operation and performance of specialised imaging equipment.
- Ensure that QES procedures are followed, and project work is executed to produce valid conclusions and with
maximum overall efficiency - technically and financially. - Ensure that the documentation of work and procedures is appropriately captured and produce professional level
reports, publications, conference contributions.
Minimum requirements
Qualifications:
- MSc in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering (Electronic/Electrical) or equivalent.
- PhD would be advantageous.
- 2 years or more experience (including postgraduate experience) in the field of data and image (2D/3D)
analysis applications using commercial/open source platforms (e.g. Matlab, Python, R, Image J, VG
StudioMax, Aviso, etc.). - Coding and/or modelling experience, preferably with mineralogical/metallurgical/chemical data.

Mintek has exciting opportunities for Furnace Operator positions within the Pyrometallurgy Division. The successful candidates will be responsible for logistics and operational issues involved in the commissioning, maintenance, and operation of laboratory and pilot scale furnace facilities in the Pyrometallurgy Division. High level of diligence is expected to ensure a high level of productivity, output, and cost management.
Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
- Responsible for logistics and operational issues, including the commissioning, maintenance, operation and management of pilot scale furnace facilities in the Pyrometallurgy Division.
- Prepare equipment and facilities for use and check the operability of the standard equipment and furnace facilities, including providing technical and procedural advice on how to operate the equipment, which equipment settings are the optimal, etc.
- Operate laboratory and pilot scale furnace equipment with minimum supervision.
- Prepare samples/feed materials from instructions and ensure all equipment is used correctly and responsibly to avoid or minimize damage, including assuming full ownership of specified laboratory / process or plant equipment, and assignment to specific workflows, such as sample/raw materials preparation, furnace operation, housekeeping, etc.
- General management and coordination of bulk sample storage areas and coordinating bulk deliveries, dispatch, and storage of bulk materials. This includes taking full ownership of routine activities such as preparation of bulk samples (e.g. screening, blending, mixing, and drying as well as re-bagging).
- Coordinating housekeeping and maintaining bulk storage areas and materials to ensure materials are stored properly to avoid contamination and/or degradation, including keeping updated inventories to allow effective retrieval.
- Conform to all relevant SHEQ procedures, guidelines and rules, and ensure that relevant risks and hazards are identified and managed through Mintek-approved risk assessments and procedures. This includes ensuring that all relevant SOPs are up to date and complied with
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- At least 3 years’ experience in the operation of relevant environment, operating furnaces and/or high temperature equipment.
- Ability to handle and process solid and molten materials in a safe and responsible manner.
- Knowledge or experience with SHEQ systems is non-negotiable.
- Understanding of the pyrometallurgy research environment is an added advantage
- Physically and medically fit
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Mining Grade 12/N4
- Possession additional relevant qualifications is an added advantage.

- Conduct research into machine learning and computational modelling applications in the mining industry;
- Ensure that projects are executed on time and within budget;
- Play a leading role in research projects and the development of products from that research;
- Act as a Principal Investigator on research projects.
- Actively participate in the training, guidance and motivation of junior staff. Participate in team debates and technical decisions;
- Produce professional reports, journal articles, papers and presentations at local and international conferences;
- Conceptualise, design, execute, analyse and troubleshoot independently;

- Computer Science or Applied Mathematics M.Sc, or Engineering with Computer Science background M.Sc (must have demonstrated the ability to tackle programming challenges in machine learning)
- Academic writing, ability to present (evidenced by publication record)
- English-speaking
- Python programming language experience
- Suitable candidates must possess at least an M.Sc and be willing to study further in a field aligned with Mintek’s research. A PhD in a machine learning or computational modelling field is preferred.
- 3-5 years relevant vocational experience following first graduation (BSc Hon/BEng).
- C , C# or VB.NET experience a bonus
- Control systems, process modelling, reinforcement learning or a strong statistical background is a bonus.
