DISPLAY ARTIST (x1 Permanent)
Qualifications & Experience: • A degree or diploma in Visual Art or Communication Design. • A diploma in Nature Conservation or Zoology/Botany is recommended. • At least 2 years' experience in interpretive designs.
Key Performance Areas: • Prepares an annual interpretive plan which is aligned to the JCPZ Business Plan, Zoo's Master Plan, Corporate Communication Strategy and Corporate Strategic Plan. • Prepares exhibit plans and interpretive prospectus. • Plan, implement an interpretive programme. • Conduct relevant visitor analysis and research. • Develops themes, topics, storylines and copy for a project. • Monitor implemented programmes/projects on an ongoing basis to determine effectiveness. • Responsible for budget proposals and control. • Evaluate relevant customer research, market conditions and competitor data. • Review new techniques and keep the organisation at the forefront of the industry developments. • Monitor and refresh all on-site communication at the Zoo and other relevant facilities.
• Develops and ensure adequate number of the following signs: safety, directional and animal identification, interactive, natural history, sensitive subject, show time and conservation message signs and exhibit headers. • Furthermore ensure that the signs are displayed at all relevant locations. • Ensure Exits and first aid points in the Zoo are adequately signposted. • Make arrangements for the Zoo's owned outdoor media (billboard and corner boards) to be updated. • Undertake regular audits of signage and other existing interpretive media and take corrective action. • Ensure maintenance of signage and media pertaining to the portfolio. • Prepare relevant reports (month end, quarterly and annual). • Submit articles to relevant publications. • Plan and implement exhibits at internal and external sites.
Knowledge & Skills: • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills — requires an excellent grasp of English • Proficient with relevant design software packages. • Creativity - think and write creatively. • Organise ideas and materials in an effective way. • Design, plan, organise and implement projects and tasks within an allocated time frame. • Ability to do research and proper referencing. • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills - establish good relations with the people working with and work effectively within a group. • Comprehensive and up to date knowledge of interpretive approaches and techniques. • Artistic • Technical: * knowing the qualities and limitation of each medium * working with a variety of media • Ability to criticise, evaluate and explain works of art/displays/exhibitions • Problem solving and critical analysis.
