MANAGER: OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT
SALARY: R38 871.54 — R51 162.48 PER MONTH BASIC (EXCLUDING BENEFITS)
 
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop a set of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety policies aligned to legislation and market operations. Develop, implement and maintain procedures for waste removal and cleaning of the market precinct. Coordinate and facilitate monthly meetings with disaster management and safety committee representatives in terms of OHS Act. Develop and maintain ammonia gas detection and alarm system. Register and ensure compliance of the refrigeration plant as a "Major Hazard Installation'". Draw up emergency plan relevant to ammonia refrigeration plant and integrate the procedures of COJ emergency service programs. Carry out a Hazard Installation Risk Assessment regularly to ensure compliance of the plant to regulations and acts. Facilitate safety awareness and education. Coordinate responses to employee and client health on safety related complaints and concerns. Maintain contract file of documents for safety meetings, incidents, hazard corrections and employee safety training. 
Conduct and coordinate periodic health routine inspections of company facilities, including trading halls, administrative buildings and all facilities, for compliance with chemical, building and general safety standards; reports non-compliance or hazardous conditions found. Develop and submit recommendations to senior level personnel to maintain compliance with municipal and governmental regulations. Assists with testing, repair, and maintenance of safety equipment including monitoring, sampling analytical equipment and instruments. Monitor and evaluate the performance of waste removal and cleaning contractors in line with the MFMA. Oversee the evaluating, collecting, preparing and inventorying hazardous materials for transport and disposal. Ensure the monitoring and recording functionality and location of emergency exits, fire extinguishers, hydrants, fire suppression systems, and/or other related items. Keep abreast of changes in municipal, OHS and other safety codes and regulations. Compile and consolidate Safety, Health and Environmental reports and submit to relevant managers for action.
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• Matric / Grade 12 with relevant qualification in Safety Management, Environmental Health, Public Health or Environmental Management with 10 Years relevant experience in Occupational Health and Safety environment and or Operations management experience
 
ADDED ADVANTAGE REQUIREMENTS
• Professional Registration with the Institute of Safety management, Health Professions Council of South Africa, or the Council for Natural Scientific Professionals
• Project Management qualification and experience
 
TECHNICAL SKILLS
• Good Knowledge and understanding of OHSA, National Environment Acts, company, municipal, and governmental safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures
• Ability to enforce, apply, comprehend and interpret the environmental policies, regulations, law, OHSA and an understanding of how the Acts can be used to protect the environment, employees and members of the public.
• Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with OHS safety standards.
