Minimum Requirements

  • Excellent writing skills necessary for publication in internationally accredited peer-reviewed academic journals, and for drafting briefing papers and reports;
  • Record of raising funds for research.
  • An interest in one of the priority research areas of DCES will be an advantage;
  • A sound grounding in research methods, especially quantitative approaches, will be a strong recommendation;

  • Conducting high level scholarly research which meets the challenge of peer review, and has both strategic and policy relevance;

  • The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) is a research division within the HSRC that employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies.
  • The DCES division is looking to appoint a suitably qualified professional in the position of Chief Research Specialist. This position supports and assists the Divisional Executive and the Strategic Leads in implementing the five-year strategic plan of the HSRC. The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research. The two over-arching questions that guide the research interventions are:

FIELDWORK SUPERVISOR (1 post)

CeSTII wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to fill a vacant position in its office in Cape Town. The main responsibility is to contribute to the HSRC's annual National Survey of Research and Experimental Development (R&D), as well as the new RD& in the Modernisation of Mining survey. The appointment is for a period of three years.
 
Minimum Requirements
 
Key requirements: Fieldworkers
  • Minimum of a relevant undergraduate qualification.
  • Preferably a minimum of an Honours degree.
  • At least three years’ experience in qualitative and quantitative fieldwork (undertaking surveys, focus groups and key informant interviews).
  • Fluency in English, as well as one other national language.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on additional tasks as per project requirements.
  • Experience with digital data collection methods.
  • High personal motivation and self-management.
  • Articulate and tactful communication skills.
  • Prior fieldwork experience with HSRC is an added advantage.

  • Report on fieldwork progress directly to the Fieldwork Manager.
  • Ensure quality work by following processes, procedures and steps outlined in the training material and as instructed.

The Dynamics of Agrofood Systems and Innovation (DASI) sub-unit within EEE, is currently undertaking a series of research projects on the global 'One Food' initiative and the Rural Development Baseline Survey  This workstream promotes a holistic approach to agrofood value chains with a focus on equitable quality of life and human wellbeing outcomes. Targeting adequate food and nutrition for all, this research contributes to ecological and transformative food production, trade and distribution without harming the environment and carbon emissions. As part of this stream of research, DASI is looking to appoint 1 x Senior Researcher for a period of eleven (11) months with an interest in economics research.

The internship experience is intensive and requires mature individuals who are able to work independently as well as in a team.  The successful individuals will be required to balance day to day duties and responsibilities in CeSTII and the HSRC with PhD related work and complete their thesis within 3 years.   • Applicants must be in possession of a master’s degree in a field closely related to the study of science, technology and innovation measurement, and should be registered for, or about to register for, a PhD with a registered South African University.
  • Experience in and understanding of the concepts of the National System of Innovation will be an added advantage.
  • Sound knowledge of data management and data analysis or statistical skills will be very advantageous.
  • A sound academic record.
  • Two–three years’ experience in the preparation of research reports and manuscripts for publication, whilst having peer-reviewed articles in recognized journals will be advantageous.
  • Experience in communicating survey findings at conferences.
  • Curiosity, enthusiasm, and interest in a research career that includes working with statistics and data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, good communication and leadership skills are required.

The Equitable Education and Economies (EEE) division is looking to appoint 6 Project Advisory Group Members for a period of 5 years to be based in any of the 12 focus countries (Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Romania, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, or Vietnam) of a research programme, commencing 1 February 2024. The project for which this appointment is to be made is called u’Good!? and aims to test and further develop relational approaches to wellbeing (RWB); and generate empirical insights into key contemporary challenges to young people’s wellbeing, and how they are addressing these. It embraces people-centred, collaborative, and participatory approaches to conducting research generating insights into how the relational aspect of multiple domains may make contributions to well-being. A key component of governance is an advisory group to provide strategic and scientific advice on the implementation of the programme.

Minimum Requirements
 
Key requirements:
  1. Expertise in one of the following areas: relational wellbeing, youth wellbeing, youth, and any of the four thematic focus areas: climate change, digitalisation, livelihoods and mental health, research impact.
  2. Access to reliable, high-quality, and stable internet connection with access to remote conferencing facilities/software such as Zoom.
  3. Availability to travel to attend a minimum of 3 research project conferences and contribute to the programme over a 5-year period as a freelancer.
  4. A PhD degree in the Social Sciences.
  5. At least 20 years’ research experience in a research environment.
  6. Exposure to multi-stakeholder and/or multi-country research would be an advantage.
  7. Documented leadership experience.
  8. Track-record of peer reviewed, accredited publications (at least 20, with some first authored and some international).
  9. Understanding of research processes and activities.
  10. Fluency in English with excellent written and verbal communication
  11. Fluency in one or more of the following languages: Spanish and French.
  12. Competency in computer programmes such as Word, OneDrive, Excel, PowerPoint, referencing software.
  13. Academic affiliation will be an advantage.
 
Duties & Responsibilities
         
Key Responsibilities
  1. Support the Principal Investigators (PIs) and thematic leads by providing guidance relating to the substantive aspects of the programme from theoretical, research design, and methodological perspectives.
  2. Provide comment and expert input reflective of their respective knowledge areas.
  3. Support the decision-making process on the Expression of Interests (EoIs) and the selection of funded projects.
  4. Form the nucleus of the Community of Practice (CoP) and steer its development and activities.
  5. Provide guidance on priority areas and topics, including the development of new priority areas, actions, or interventions that encourage ambitious and innovative research.
  6. Mentor research PIs, if and where this might be required.
  7. Contribute to improving the potential uptake of the research findings by, for example, policy- and decision-makers and funders of youth-related programmes.
  8. Act as ambassadors for the programme internationally.
  9. Attend CoP events (a minimum of 3 per annum).
  10. Attend CoP meetings (1 per annum).
  11. Attend project conferences (3 over the course of the programme).
 
Remuneration for this position will be based on inputs over the five-year period, as listed below:

  2. Attendance and input into Advisory meeting - Full-Day Meeting (2024-2028) - $300 each

  4. Critical review of mid-term report – 2026 - $300 for 2 days
  5. Critical review of final report – 2028 - $300 for 2 days
  6. Ad hoc tasks - 2025-2028 - $37,5 per hour
