Job Advert Summary
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the HSRC seeks to appoint a suitably qualified and respected executive leader, academic and scholar, to take on the responsibilities of Group Executive: Research  Impact. The successful incumbent shall be required to lead, mentor and direct the team of research specialists in various strategic units, and to drive the team to formulate impact assessment strategies, innovating methodologies and coordinating working groups to realise the vision of Research  Impact and that of the HSRC. The successful candidate will ensure the quality of research outputs and enable research dissemination strategies, research partnerships and collaboration, which drive the HSRC’s quest for impact in policy-engaged research.

Minimum Requirements
  • A PhD in either Social Sciences or other related fields (NQF 10)
  • Fifteen (15) years of experience as a senior researcher, managing and leading senior research teams with demonstrable impactful outcomes and results;
  • At least ten (10) years of experience at a strategic and senior management level in an academic, research or research institution environment;
  • An academic leader with a strong publishing record (books, book chapters, journal articles), several of which must be international and first or sole-authored;
  • Excellent networking skills and experience working with senior policymakers and decision-makers;
  • Fluency in English.
 
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership for Research Impact in quality assurance, science communication, impact assessment and dissemination for research outputs along with designated staff and HSRC resources.
  • Work with the Unit managers to oversee strategic administrative leadership for the Unit’s support team and ensure each Unit component is adequately resourced. Ensure the successful provision of strategic initiatives that contribute towards creating a culture of impact for the HSRC.
  • Ensure the successful sourcing of strategic external partners (locally and internationally) aligned with the social research objectives of the HSRC and drive successful liaising between strategic partners of the policy-making environment and researchers within the HSRC.
  • Ensure the provision of sustainable and impactful research that government, communities and state bodies can take up through policy improvements.

Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act No.17 of 2008.
The HSRC aims to attract and retain high-calibre skills and human resources necessary to effectively execute both its mandate to conduct research and to support the strategic intent of the organisation.

In delivering ‘Social Science that makes a difference,’ the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Port Elizabeth, and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008. The Public Health, Societies and Belonging (PHSB) division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research to improve health, well-being and promote a socially just and cohesive society.
 
PHSB is looking for a suitably qualified persons to take on project management responsibilities for a community-based research project implemented in the Saldanha Bay Municipality, but based at the Cape Town office. The successful candidate will primarily manage a community based public health related research project and be required to travel to Saldanha Bay as per project requirements.
 
The Project Manager will report to the SRS and co-I of the study, and work closely with our partner organisation. This position is offered on a 24-month contract.

Minimum Requirements:
  • A Master's degree in the social and human sciences or related fields; OR relevant certification, qualification, or experience
  • 1-2 years’ experience working on research projects involving human participants  
  • Experience in project coordination activities
  • Experience supervising and managing a team
  • Experience in collecting data, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions
  • Fluency in English and Afrikaans
  • A valid and unendorsed driver’s license
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
  • Previous experience on research projects focused on pregnancy-related risks and/or substance use
  • Good Participatory Practice training
 
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversee the project, and plan and organise project activities aimed at achieving operational and scientific goals.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise project staff, providing ongoing support and mentorship.
  • Collect data and oversee data collection activities, ensuring quality and protocol compliance.
  • Foster continuous learning by assessing study activities, processes, and systems.
  • Ensure regular documentation and reporting on scientific, ethical, and financial
  • Coordinate activities with partners and facilitate community entry for study
  • Conduct quality assurance to ensure protocol fidelity and data integrity.
  • Manage external service providers and ensure delivery of contracted services.
  • Uphold ethical conduct requirements in the field and office.
  • Support an active publication and dissemination strategy in collaboration with the scientific team.
