Purpose of the Job
To will provide strategic direction to, and lead a specialist scientific group, in undertaking and facilitating effective research and providing scientific support to internal and external stakeholders (government and other relevant stakeholders) in pursuance of the effective biodiversity conservation in the province.
Area of responsibility
Based in Head Office, the position reports to the Head Scientific Services.
Qualifications
- An MSc degree in Ecological or Conservation Sciences is mandatory
- PhD in Conservation or Ecological Sciences is desired
- Drivers licence CODE 08
Experience
- 5 years’ management experience on leading and co-ordinating multi-disciplinary research in the field of conservation and or ecological sciences as well as in overseeing research and supervising scientists, and planning
Key Performance Areas
- Provide strategic direction and leadership to Conservation Research & Assessment unit
- Coordinate and oversee the compilation of the State of biodiversity reporting within agreed turn-around time
- Lead the coordination of provincial biodiversity targets, monitoring plans, and biodiversity assessment reports
- Facilitate research, and the popular and scientific publication of scientific and technical reports to advance scientific research and profile Ezemvelo’s scientific capacity
- Oversee and supervise research activities to study the relationships between natural assets/Ecosystem problems and patterns of economic production and consumption
- Deliver research products to support development of a quantitative framework to enhance government spent and decision-making
- Ensure that research on biodiversity and economic topics such as alternative fuel use, payment of ecosystems goods and services, carbon tax, etc
- Contribute to the development of provincial and/or national guidelines, regulations and legislation
- Liaise with outside organisations and research institutions at local, regional, provincial, national and international levels on issues relating to conservation research, planning, assessment and management

- Establish and manage strategic relations and partnerships with external stakeholders including NGO`s, research institutions, government departments on social research

- Knowledge of Conservation Sciences
- Knowledge of bio-economy concept and ecosystems goods and services
- Familiarity with conservation conventions and multilateral agreements
- Competent in scientific research & technical report writing skills
