ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY STUDENT RELIEF FUND (EMSRF)-2026 ACADEMIC YEAR
 
eThekwini Municipality invites eligible South African citizens residing permanently within the municipal area to apply for the 2026 student relief fund for first-time undergraduate studies at public higher education institutions.
Financial assistance is available for students studying or accepted at public higher education institutions (excluding private institutions) and will be awarded based on academic merit. EMSRF covers registration fees, with possible limited support toward tuition, but excludes accommodation, meals, books, transport, and other related costs.
 
Eligibility Requirements
• Must be a South African citizen and a permanent resident within the eThekwini Municipality’s area of jurisdiction, with valid proof of residence.
• Must have gained admission to a public university or TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) college. Admission should be for a fulltime qualification recognized by the Department of Higher Education and Training.
• Applicants accepted or enrolled at UNISA may be considered, provided they are not currently employed.
• EMSRF is needs-based registration relief fund. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, meaning their household income is below the threshold of R200 000 per year. Students from higher income are not eligible (Proof of income required).
