STEWARDSHIP FACILITATOR (5-YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

Purpose
Reporting to the Stewardship Manager, the Stewardship Facilitator will facilitate protected area expansion through stewardship, with particular emphasis on state land and areas under private land tenure.

Requirements
- A three-tertiary qualification in Conservation Management, Environmental or Social Sciences, as well as 5 (five) years’ experience in biodiversity conservation or land use planning.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in working with landowners, government agencies, NGOs and other institutions.
- GIS skills an advantage.
- Driver’s license.
- 4×4 driving experience is essential.
- Own vehicle is essential.
Competencies/ Skills required:
- Excellent communication, facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
- Sound knowledge of ecological and conservation principles.
- Sound knowledge of planning principles.
- Sound knowledge of the relevant environmental and conservation legislation.
- Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision as well as in a team.
- Excellent planning and organising skills.
- Research and report-writing skills.
Key Performance Areas
- Stewardship: Identify the relevant stakeholders involved in identified areas for protected area expansion. Engage with landowners and institutions in priority areas for PA Expansion in the Eastern Cape to identify opportunities for stewardship, assignment and/or co-management. Coordinate site assessments and development of management plans and business plans. Facilitate negotiation, drafting and signing of stewardship agreements. Ensure that requirements for formal declaration are met. Provide on-going stewardship extension support and monitoring. Provide support to protected area management authorities and landowners and build capacity to implement management plans.
- Stakeholder engagement: Participate in stewardship and other development initiatives that may have an impact on a specific geographical area.
