Lecturer

Minimum requirements 

  • Master’s Degree (within the discipline of apparel or related areas). Undergraduate studies must include apparel production or apparel technology subjects.
  • Sound knowledge of the technical aspects of apparel, including but not limited to garment construction, production methods, quality management, work-study, operations management, and supply chain management.
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant teaching/ relevant apparel industry experience – e.g., in apparel technology, manufacturing processes, and/or business. (Teaching or training experience in relevant Higher Education, industry, or training institutions).

 

 Additional Recommendation

  • Demonstrate a solid portfolio of work and traceable references.
  • Prior teaching experience at the Higher Education level will be highly advantageous.
  • Practical manufacturing or retail experience in the apparel sector.
  • Strong team player, high level of initiative, highly motivated, and ability to network.
  • Teaching or training, or mentoring experience in Higher Education or the Commercial sector
  • Strong networking skills, high level of initiative, and highly motivated.
  • A visionary, able to do creative problem solving, team development, and strategic planning.

 

Summary of duties 

  • Lecture in apparel product operations and process-related subjects, or where required, as deemed necessary by the Head of Department.
  • Preparation and delivery of lectures and practicals, and assessment of student work.
  • Assist in the circulation and development of appropriate course material.
  • Perform administrative duties assigned by the Head of Department.

Senior Lecturer

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in the relevant discipline
  • Sound knowledge of fibre manufacture, short and long staple yarn spinning, and textile testing.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in higher education teaching/industry experience in a related field.

 

Additional Recommendation

  • PhD within the discipline of dry processing of textile science/engineering. Undergraduate studies must include textile technology with a focus on dry processing subjects.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant teaching and/or textile industry experience in textile technology, manufacturing processes, or related areas (including teaching or training experience in Higher Education, industry, or training institutions).
  • Sound knowledge of the technical aspects of textile fibre manufacturing, yarn manufacturing, and textile testing.
  • A proven record of research publications and successful supervision within the field of textiles and related areas would be an advantage.
  • A broad understanding of current research developments and teaching trends within the discipline.
  • Evidence of ongoing academic development and professional growth.
  • Evidence of involvement in community engagement projects.

Minimum Requirements

  • BEng Tech / BTech Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Power Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Base qualification in the field of Electrical Power Engineering (Heavy Current) or equivalent.
  • Must possess at least 3 years’ relevant experience.

 

 Recommendations

  • BEng Tech Honours in Electrical Power Engineering or closely related qualification (preferred)
  • Primary qualifications accredited by a professional body such as the Engineering Council of South Africa.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in managing students of diversity and working with a diverse pool of staff.
  • A strong passion for technical investigations, troubleshooting, repairs, and creative development in the laboratory.
  • Good communication, effective people management skills, and adherence to workplace etiquette.
  • Aptitude to learn Engineering application software, improve, and engage in professional development activities.
  • Good track record or relevant experience, and a desire to advance technical development in the Department.
  • Serve as an invigilator for examinations and tests under the Chief Invigilator.

 

Summary of duties

  • Coordinate and implement the effective operation, administration, and maintenance of designated laboratories in the department of Electrical Power Engineering.
  • Support and assist academic staff in regularly assessing students’ performance through practical assessment, assistance, and coordination of Open Laboratory sessions.
  • Maintain laboratories to be in a fully functional state and safe working conditions to facilitate disciplined and efficient execution of students’ practicals and projects.
  • Must have good communication skills – written/verbal/presentation in English.
  • Must be able to work independently and achieve results on time.
  • Must be able to plan and schedule work efforts, including management of resources, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Purpose of the Job

To support the management of DUT’s fixed assets at our Midlands Campus's, including verification, record-keeping, reconciliations, insurance claims, and compliance with asset management policies and IFRS standards, thereby safeguarding the institution’s assets and minimizing risks.

 

Minimum Requirements

Education (Formal Qualification Required)

  • Diploma (NQF 6) in Financial /Cost Accounting, or other relevant Finance Diploma.

Ideal

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Commerce

 

Experience

  • 2–3 years’ experience in financial administration or asset management.
  • 4–5 years’ experience in asset management in higher education or a large organisation.
  • Knowledge of asset management and financial administration
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)

  • Assist in managing insurance documentation for university assets.

NRF RESEARCH FINANCE OFFICER: 2 YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT

The National Research Foundation (NRF) Finance Officer will perform all financial functions related to the NRF portfolio and support the research office and the Manager: External Funding to build and maintain the relationships with external funders / donors from a financial perspective.

The role also plays key role to identify and establish effective methodologies to maximize the sourcing, financial accounting, management, and reporting on research funds and actively participate in policy development and improvement of research financial management systems.

 

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENT

  • M +3 tertiary qualification Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma - NQF 7 (Financial Accounting or a Finance related)

 

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 2 - 5 years' broad financial experience with oversight of finances, Budgeting, accounting, and reporting activities.

 

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and rules pertaining to Finance and Higher Education
  • Proven knowledge of data collection methodologies
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools, systems, and statistical applications
  • Advanced Proficiency in MS Office
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of donor / funding contracts and guidelines

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Implement specific tasks relating to the NRF Fund as directed by the Manager: External funding specifically regarding the following:

  • Reconciliation of all NRF Grant payment receipts deposited and consolidate the accounting entries.
  • Reconcile all the expenditure types as per Funding Instrument Guideline.
  • Ensure all NRF expenditure is in line with the DUT policy and procedures.
  • Review and verify expenditures of restricted projects assigned to ensure adherence to budgetary and donor requirements.
  • Maintain a complete record of all pertinent documents of each project and coordinate with other Finance Staff and various project leaders to ensure that the financial implementation adheres with all the other aspects of the project agreement/funding agreement.
  • Assist the research office with budget preparation and budget roll overs where applicable.
  • Prepare requests to open cost centres in line with funding agreements.
  • Prepare journals for allocation of funds, and reallocations of expenditure where applicable.
  • Ensure all NRF transactions comply with the basic accounting principles and guidelines, IFRS and all other applicable legislative framework
  • Collaborate with Project leaders to clarify financial issues, answer queries and give update on the financial and budget status of the project.
  • Working together with University Asset section, ensure all NRF purchased assets are properly recorded in the DUT asset register
  • Facilitate the annual audit of NRF Grant via independent auditors of DUT by not later than NRF deadline of each year.
  • Ensure processes and procedures are in place to and prevent recurrence of audit findings
  • Working with NRF Grant administrator ensure that DUT commit and accounts for its required portion of the co-funding (if any) related to the cost of a funded research project, as per the operation of the relevant NRF funding instrument, for every year of funding allocated to such a research project funded by the NRF.
  •  Provide/arrange/make available for NRF or the NRF’s Internal and External Auditors or any person authorized by them to have access at all reasonable times to the DUT premises for the purpose of inspecting the books and records (including financial records) relating to projects funded by the NRF and/or the Grant Deposit funded by the NRF
  • Prepare payment requisitions and reconciliations on a monthly basis for students to receive the full bursary value as allocated by the NRF.
  • Ensure the preparation of the final financial reports on actual expenditure incurred for the financial period by the given deadline each year, in the format provided by the NRF and the external audit there off.
  • Ensure timeous submission of claims of all NRF claims as per NRF rules, regulations and Guidelines on the NRF Portal
  • Attend training as and when provided by NRF.
  • Provide Training to DUT researchers on the Financial policies and procedure of DUT as an institution.
  • Keep records and reconciliations of all claims submitted to NRF.
  • Upon request from NRF, arrange refund such deposit or portion of the Grant deposit (GD).
  • Liaise and arrange with Internal Audit to provide assurance that the GD was indeed used as prescribed in the NRF funding agreement.
  • Ensure that interest earned on the GD is used towards the funding of the salary of at least one additional member of staff dedicated to NRF matters, in either the research, scholarship or finance office, and any additional staff as permitted in the grant funding agreement.
  • Provide financial and administrative support services to the researchers to ensure the effective operation of the NRF funded research projects within the Institution.
  • Ensure capital preservation of the GD, and allocation of interest to the account.
  • Ensure through the DUT, treasury function, that the GD funds are invested with a reputable banking institution duly registered in terms of South African law.
  • Ensure monthly recons on grant deposit and interest allocations are performed monthly.
  • Ensure that funds in the GD are only used for bridging finance of research projects that relate to NRF funding at the Institution, and that monthly recons are performed to monitor the account.
  • Undertakes special projects and prepares reports accordingly as and when requested.

MANAGER: SECURITY OPERATIONS AND TECHNICAL SERVICES

Location: Durban / Midlands Campuses

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

To manage and oversee the daily operations, technical systems, and coordination of campus security across DUT campuses, ensuring the safety of students, staff, visitors and assets. The role integrates operational leadership with technical expertise in surveillance, access control and control room management, while ensuring compliance with security policies and continuously improving security systems.

 

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • A relevant Degree or Postgraduate Diploma (NQF Level 7).

Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience in Security Operations, including at least three (3) years at management level in security operations.

Legal Requirements

  • PSIRA Registration (Grade A).
  • Valid Driver’s Licence (Code B).

Special Requirements

  • Must be available 24/7 for emergencies.
  • Must pass regular fitness, medical and security clearance checks.

Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for, amongst others:

  • Oversee security operations across Durban and Midlands campuses.
  • Ensure adequate deployment of security personnel and effective security coverage.
  • Monitor and evaluate daily security reports and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Implement patrol, access control and incident response measures.
  • Manage central control room operations and ensure 24-hour CCTV and access control monitoring.
  • Supervise control room personnel and monitor operational performance.
  • Ensure compliance with incident reporting protocols and data storage requirements.
  • Oversee the installation, maintenance and continuous improvement of security systems.
  • Manage CCTV, alarm and access control infrastructure and ensure system functionality.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and develop emergency response protocols.
  • Coordinate evacuation drills and monitor compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards.
  • Develop campus-specific contingency and emergency response plans.
  • Lead investigations into security incidents and ensure proper evidence collection and documentation.
  • Liaise with SAPS, emergency services and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Track security incident trends and implement preventative measures.
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee close protection services for designated high-risk individuals.
  • Conduct threat and vulnerability assessments and develop protection plans.
  • Supervise, mentor and develop security personnel.
  • Manage performance, training, rostering and compliance with PSIRA requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with DUT security policies and procedures.
  • Conduct audits, inspections and contractor compliance reviews.
  • Prepare management reports and recommend continuous improvements to security operations and systems.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Diploma (NQF 6) in one of the following or a related field: Property Studies / Real Estate, Public Administration, Business Administration, Facilities Management, Office Management / Administration.

Key responsibilities:
