SELECTION
 Training in a public security environment i.e. Military, Police or any relevant community Policing Services is a pre-requisite 
 As these posts require strenuous physical activity, shortlisted candidates will undergo a physical assessment; 
 As these posts are at various Ports of Entry and Borderlines within the Republic of South Africa, all postings will be done at the discretion of the Border Management Authority; 
 Shortlisted candidates will undergo a vetting process through the State Security Agency as well the Department’s internal Employment Suitability Check processes; and 
 Successful candidates will be required to enter into a Performance Agreement upon commencement of duty. 
 
 
 
 
CHIEF BORDER GUARD (GROUP / PLATOON COMMANDER), (5 POSITIONS)
REF NO: HRMC 10/22/01 

SALARY LEVEL : A basic salary of R321 543 to R378 765 per annum (Level 8). In addition, a range of competitive benefits are offered.

REQUIREMENTS : • An undergraduate qualification in a Security related field at NQF level 6 as recognized by SAQA • 2 years’ experience in command within a Security related field in public security law enforcement • Extensive experience in commanding, planning and executing security operations • Leadership qualifications in commanding of staff/officials • Extensive experience in operational planning, commanding and exercising security operations • Training in a public security environment i.e. Military, Police or any relevant community Policing Services • Firearm competency • Eligible to carry a firearm • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity • Aligning performance for success, building a successful team and a strategic working relations • Communication, decision making and knowledge management • Planning and organising • Quality orientation and safety awareness • Ability to operate and safeguard firearm • Adaptability, commitment, creativity and discipline • Empathy, frustration tolerance, impact and innovative • Observant, self-confidence, self-motivated, tact and trustworthy • A valid driver’s license • A Military, Police or relevant Community Policing Services training Certificate is required • Will be working mainly along the borderline – operational in the field. 
 
DUTIES : The successful candidate will be responsible for, amongst others, the following specific tasks:  • Exercise Command and Control at team level to detect and prevent the illegal entry of goods and people into South Africa • Provide leadership in the execution of effective Port of Entry and Borderline operations • Exercise full command and control at team level to ensure efficient and effective border operations • Direct, monitor and lead the sub-unit in all operations as part of the border guard • Enforce operational and administrative related tasking in line with prescripts and approved drills • Conduct interviews and interrogations and appear as witness in court • Analyse and disseminate intelligence information rapidly • Use a variety of law enforcement databases and prepare reports • Supervise the implementation of the policies and legislative framework • Manage and control the legitimate movement of goods and people at the Ports of Entry and Borderline • Ensure operational readiness of the team for borderline activities • Plan and conduct border operations • Manage implementation of the deployment strategies for the team • Coordinate daily statistics on activities within the area of command • Ensure the conducting and control of patrols (vehicles, foot patrols) within the area of command • Report incidents from the team • Monitor the capacitation of the Border Guard for execution and excellence in Border Law Enforcement • Ensure adherence to all training programmes as planned for the Unit • Ensure all staff/officials are at the correct level and readiness of training • Ensure that instructors follow the proper training routine during training • Observe the in-service training of all staff members in the Unit • Monitor and supervise all training of the Unit • Ensure training deficiencies of the Officers are rectified • Ensure ethical conduct of the Border Guard in line with the Legislation and training manuals • Ensure adherence by Border Guard to the dress code • Supervise and control human, financial, physical and information resources • Manage the human resource related functions • Supervise performance of the Unit • Responsible for the welfare and wellness of the team under your command • Manage discipline in the area of command • Coordinate and execute effective state asset management and control.

SENIOR BORDER GUARD (TEAM LEADER), (13 POSITIONS)

SALARY LEVEL : A basic salary of R261 372 to R307 890 per annum (Level 7). In addition, a range of competitive benefits are offered.

DUTIES : The successful candidate will be responsible for, amongst others, the following specific tasks: • To facilitate the general Border Management and Security Services at the identified Ports of Entry and the borderline • Supervise and control effective and efficient Border Management activities • Attend on and off duty parades and deployment of border guard members • Process proactive and responsive complaint attendances • Render specialised advice and support at the borderline • Inspect registers, forms and computerised mainframe systems • Visit and inspect temporary holding cells • Monitor and control exhibits / evidence found to be handed over to other Agencies • Arrange transfer of arrested illegal foreigners/ detainees to the nearest ports of entry or police station for deportations • Provide inputs on reports to be compiled as required by higher authority • Facilitate the implementation of control measures for the movement of goods and people in the identified ports and segments • Provide support on the planned roadblock / check point operations in the port of entry and the vulnerable areas in the borderline • Conduct vehicle/foot patrols at outer/inner perimeter areas for inspection purposes • Administer, control and regulate movement of people and goods • Make logistical arrangements to escort valuable, vulnerable and perishable Cargo from and to vaults, vessels, aircrafts and other vehicles assigned for such cargo • Monitor and control the access/egress at the borderline, POE and border law enforcement area • Report international visitors, travellers and Shoppers to be monitored • Provide support on the operations of the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) room as and when required • Supervise and control human, financial, physical and information resources • Monitor personnel placement, training, development, performance, discipline and service terminations • Coordinate and execute effective state asset management/control • Secure and facilitate information resources and information communication technologies.

BORDER GUARD, (182 POSITIONS)

SALARY LEVEL : A basic salary of R211 713 to R249 378 per annum (Level 6). In addition, a range of competitive benefits are offered.

REQUIREMENTS : • A Grade 12 Certificate and training in public security environment • Training in a public security environment i.e. Military, Police or any relevant Community Policing Services • Firearm Competency • Physical fitness • A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage • Communication, decision-making and knowledge management • Planning, organising and conflict management • Quality orientation, safety awareness and ability to operate and safeguard firearm • Adaptability, commitment and creativity • Discipline, empathy, external actualisation and frustration tolerance • Impact, innovative and observant • Self-confidence, tact, trustworthy and self- motivated • A Military, Police or relevant Community Policing Services training Certificate is required. 
 
DUTIES : The successful candidate will be responsible for, amongst others, the following specific tasks: • To perform operations on general border management and security services at the identified Ports entry and the borderline. Conduct general border management activities and security services to ensure effective and efficient border management. Attend the on and off duty parades and be stationed as per deployment schedule of border guards • Process proactive and responsive complaint attendances • Report on arrested illegal foreigners held in the temporary holding cells • Safeguard and control exhibits / evidence found to be handed over to other Agencies • Conduct arrest of illegal foreigners/ detainees to be transferred to the nearest ports of entry or police station for further handling • Gather information for compiled reports as required by higher authority • Implement controls on the movement of goods and people in the identified ports and segments • Search people, luggage and vehicles as per the relevant regulations on the planned roadblock / check point operations in the port of entry and the vulnerable areas in the borderline • Perform borderline duties, traffic check point operations and other law enforcement duties at outer/inner perimeter areas • Report on all illegal movement of people and goods • Maintain surveillance from covert positions at or near the international borders • Control the access/egress at the identified port of entry and in border law enforcement area • Conduct vehicle/foot patrols around the inner perimeter • Control and regulate illegal movement of people and goods • Identify and report on international visitors, travellers and shoppers for monitoring purposes • Respond to electronic sensor alarms in remote areas as a Mobile Response Team.
