CHIEF RESEARCHER: SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY INNOVATION
About:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Chief Researcher: Synthetic Biology Innovation in the Synthetic Biology and Precision Medicine Centre within Advanced Chemistry and Life Sciences Division. The incumbent will be responsible to provide technical leadership and give strategic direction in the development of a bio-foundry to accelerate the delivery of products in support of a national drive to localise the production of high-value products for health and other industrial applications. Key responsibilities:
- Support the Advanced Chemistry and Life Sciences Division in developing and implementing a clear strategy in synthetic biology research for the benefit of health and other industries;
- Design and implement an original joint CSIR South African National Research Foundation Innovation Chair in Synthetic Biology program to generate impact within South Africa and internationally;
- Build a sustainable synthetic biology innovation and bio-foundry lab capability, ensuring that appropriate infrastructure and supporting structures are established;
- Lead multidisciplinary teams to develop and execute Design–Build–Test–Learn (DBTL) cycles for prioritised products and processes;
- Lead and deliver technical deliverables that are necessary for design, optimization, and/or commercialization of products/outputs;
- Guide and supervise senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and master’s students, strategically create human capital development pipelines through industry and university collaboration;
- Attract and retain suitably qualified staff to drive the Centre’s programs, and take an active role in the development, mentoring, and coaching of the team, work actively to enhance the diversity of the Centre, and play a lead role in attracting, developing, and retaining talent;
- Mobilise funding resources from diverse income streams to support the Centre’s research, development and innovation programs;
- Lead development of collaborative research and innovation networks with universities and industry partners locally and internationally;
- Drive knowledge dissemination through publication of research innovations in high impact journals, conference presentations, popular articles, and books, and provide thought leadership on the subject matter;
- Lead and contribute to the development of new and adapted technologies for licencing, patenting, and transfer to new and existing industries;
- Manage projects and programs effectively, delivering outputs on budget and time;
- Create commercialization opportunities for synthetic biology innovation through industry engagement locally and internationally;
- Drive joint technology development programs with industry locally and internationally;
- Participate in the national discourse and strategy discussions in synthetic biology.
Qualifications, skills, and experience:
- A Doctoral degree in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, synthetic biology, microbiology, molecular biology or related fields with at least fifteen years’ experience in research and development in synthetic biology innovation, preferably in academia and/or industry, of which ten years should be in managerial capacity including project and program management;
- Advanced knowledge and expertise in synthetic biology, with focus on microbiology, molecular biology, bio-foundry, and biotechnologies;
- Must be an internationally recognized expert, with a strong research, innovation and human capital development output track record, extensive publication and innovation record, minimum of H score of twenty-five (25);
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Attract and successfully supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows;
- Implement joint technology development programs with industries;
- Generate IP and to commercialize innovation;
- Mobilise financial resources from diverse funding sources;
- Appointed at the level of Associate Professor or full Professor, benchmarked nationally.

ENTERPRISE ARCHITECT
About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for an Enterprise Architect in the ICT Services portfolio. Key responsibilities:
- Analyse enterprise business context (trends and business strategy), as well as change requirements in other enterprise architecture (EA) viewpoints, to derive the Enterprise Information Systems Architecture (EISA) future state. This includes defining the requirements, principles and models that guide technology decisions for the enterprise;
- Conduct Enterprise Architecture Reviews in line with the CSIR EA Framework and architecture methodology;
- Develop and present business cases to acquire appropriate technologies that will realise the EISA;
- Define high-level migration plans to address the gaps between the current and future state, ensuring that it is in sync with the IT budgeting process;
- Develop, direct and influence enterprise information technology implementation roadmaps to enable the achievement of the business strategic objectives and to align and meet the Enterprise Vision Architecture;
- Lead the analysis of the current technology environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement. In addition, lead the analysis of information systems and market trends to determine their potential impact on the enterprise as well as on the EISA;
- Oversee information systems implementation and modification activities, particularly for new or shared solutions. Design or approve enterprise and solution architectures. Consult on application development projects to harmonise systems with the EISA and identify when it is necessary to modify the EISA to accommodate immediate or future project needs;
- Oversee and facilitate the research, evaluation and selection of hardware and software technology and product standards, as well as the design of standard configurations in order to ensure alignment to the EA principles and to realise the Enterprise Architecture Vision;
- Identify the organisational impact (for example, on skills, processes, structures and culture) and financial impact of the EISA so as to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of the EISA;
- Govern and develop documentation relating to EISA design and analysis work to ensure compliance to the EA framework and visibility of the current and future state architectures;
- Understand, advocate and augment the business and ICT strategies — and, more specifically, EA development and service delivery. Be prepared to sell the overall EA process, its outcome and ongoing results, and to lead the communication or marketing activities needed to ensure EISA success and use;
- Assist with designing the governance activities associated with ensuring EISA compliance;
- Define metrics to measure and demonstrate EISA value.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree or National Diploma in computer science/engineering, information technology or CSIR industry application;
- The following certifications will be an added advantage:
- TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework);
- ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library);
- COBIT (Control Objectives for Information and Related Technologies);
- Project Management;
- SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture);
- Five to Eight years in experience and a proven track record in ICT of which a minimum of;
- Two to four years in an ICT supervisory position;
- five years in design and implementation of ICT solutions and/or Enterprise Architectures experience, with a strong knowledge of application development, middleware, and database management;
- Two to Four years in application architecture design;
- Two years in business architecture/business requirements design;
- One to Two years in data architecture design;
- Exposure to multiple, diverse technical configurations, technologies and processing environments;
- People management;
- Project management.
- Understanding industry standards and regulations;
- Communication and engagement with senior executives influencing stakeholder acceptance of appropriate ICT solutions;
- Knowledge of and competence in the provision of ICT Strategy services including:
- Knowledge of components of a holistic Enterprise Architecture;
- Ability to translate business needs into Enterprise Architecture requirements;
- Knowledge of international information security standards;
- Technical knowledge of the software development lifecycle, data management related ICT infrastructures and standards in the data sciences related disciplines;
- Ability to contrast the design options’ benefits and provide a recommendation;
- Creativity and innovation with the ability to lead a team in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment;
- Ability to balance the long-term and short-term implications of individual decisions;
- Ability to remain neutral towards technology, vendor and product choices, as well as to be more interested in results than in personal preferences;
- Solid experience, knowledge of project portfolio management, associated methodologies and application thereof;
- Knowledge of continuous improvement processes, process control and enhancement.

- Knowledge of various systems development models and frameworks.

- Lead the domain cluster;

- Operational effectiveness of the Cluster underpinned by consistent performance management, good corporate governance as articulated through relevant dynamic legal framework, proactive compliance to SHEQ rules and regulations, living the CSIR values and persistent drive to attain the CSIR Vision through the Mission;
- Sustained profitability and growth of the cluster while meeting or exceeding key performance indicators that contribute towards the CSIR’s shareholder impact;
- Create of the research, development and innovation ecosystem with the required expertise, infrastructure, industry relevant know-how and other attributes that give rise to the cluster becoming a vibrant ecosystem that produces marketable innovative solutions, industrialised technologies and increased royalty income, among other success factors;
- Advanced discrete/assembled product industries such as Aerospace, Automotive, Electrotechnical, Medical devices and equipment, Industrial Machinery, and others. Engineered Materials, 4IR enabled manufacturing processes and manufacturing equipment, Future Production Systems, 4IR based industry transformation, supply chain integration, external and internal logistics, end-to-end digital engineering, Product Life Management (PLM), product development and concurrent engineering.
Qualifications, experience and skills:
- A Master’s Degree in a manufacturing-related engineering qualification (mechanical, industrial, electronics, and mechatronics);
- A Doctoral degree would be an added advantage;
- Business Management qualification will be an added advantage;
- At least eight years’ senior management experience in manufacturing research, development innovation (RDI) and commercialisation in industry or leading Research and Technology Organisation (RTO);
- Demonstrated track record of strategy development and implementation in manufacturing;
- Demonstrated business development and commercialization in the manufacturing sector;
- Demonstrated application of a systems approach in manufacturing;
- Demonstrated experience of modernization, digitisation of factories, and manufacturing processes exploiting 4IR technology opportunities;
- Deep manufacturing industry experience;
- Demonstrated experience in advanced materials, parts fabrication, assemblies, product development, factory optimisation, supply chain optimisation;
- Demonstrated experience of people management, project management and organisational development;

Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Doctoral degree in agriculture, biosciences, food, bioprocess engineering or related qualification. In addition, a business-related qualification will be an added advantage.
- At least five years senior management experience in a Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) and commercialisation industry or leading Research and Technology Organisation (RTO).
- Proven track record of managing minimum annual budget of R100 million linked to RDI initiatives in industry or leading RTO.
- Proven track record of successful IP commercialisation.
- Evidence of high-level stakeholder management, advanced agriculture and food industry related networks.
- Excellent communicator with strong, demonstrable business acumen; and
- Demonstrated experience of strong people management and organisational development skills.
- All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

- Liaise with contractors and site construction managers;
- Assist with all activities related to project management, site supervision, quality control and administration;
- Manage minor projects under the supervision and guidance of a senior Project Manager;
- Assist with the implementation of all aspects relating to new building projects, building renovations, from project commencement, documentation, tenders or quotations, project management and handover of the project.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A three-year diploma or bachelor of technology degree in Architecture;
- Ability to function under pressure and manage stress;
- Good office administrative and record keeping skills;
- Good analytical and problem solving skills;
- Good time management and planning skills;
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
- Attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills;
- Sound work ethic and ability to work in large teams is essential.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office;

Key responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation and management of contracts;
- Source pricing and prepare cost analysis for repair and maintenance project work;
- Assist in establishing a client's requirements and undertake feasibility studies;
- Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors and manufactures for all contracts;
- General project management activities and provide administrative support to the team;
- Establish clear project brief and outlining the scope of work through the development;
- Compile payment certificates with contractors before invoices are submitted to the project manager for approval and payment;
- Provide the client with a number of estimates based on different design options as the design may develop for approval;
- Obtain quotes and assist with managing project finances;
- Develop cost plan based on the approved design option;
- Prepare detailed estimates and finalization of an area schedule based on project.
- Prepare bills of quantities based on the approved design;
- Participate in the preparation of Request For Quotations and financial valuation of tenders;
- Provide post contract services in order to monitor and control the project costs and ensure they fall within the accepted budget;
- Notify the client on matters that could possibly affect the project cost before they occur.
- Prepare updated cash flows and cost reports ensuring the client is aware of all matters relating to the project costs;
- Attend site and design coordination meetings as required;
- Re-measure for final account purposes as work proceeds;
- Manage minor projects under the supervision and guidance of a senior Project Manager;
- Prepare monthly valuation for Contractor’s payment and estimates of proposed variation.

HUMAN CAPITAL PROJECT ADMINISTRATOR
About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Human Capital Project Administrator in the Human Capital Management portfolio. The incumbent will provide administrative and coordination support for effective and efficient implementation of graduate development programmes such as bursary, scholarship and studentship programmes etc. in order to ensure a supply of appropriately qualified talent for the organisation. The position is based in Pretoria.
Key responsibilities:
- Coordinate the recruitment process of graduate development programmes;
- Coordinate the contracting and appointment process for the graduate development programmes;
- Coordinate the annual induction, training programme and networking events;
- Engage with service providers for delivery of relevant services;
- Coordinate the vacation work programme;
- Coordinate the buddy programme including mentors and mentees training, and monitoring student feedback;
- Coordinate the student registration process with the universities and maintain a database of all registration documents;
- Coordinate student support including individual and group meetings;
- Travel to universities to meet with our students and university partners;
- Request, capture and analyze students results;
- Review student results and communicate funding decisions with students, finance and HR;
- Attend to student enquiries as required including the monitoring correspondence with students;
- Attend outreach events around the country in order to create awareness of CSIR and graduate development programmes;
- Coordinate the placement process for the graduating students within the CSIR;
- Provide administrative support with relevant departments for the implementation of the graduate development programmes
- Coordinate the relevant training for supervisors and students;
- Coordinate, monitor and evaluate the implementation of relevant graduate development programme;
- Maintain a database and documents for all funded students;
- Maintain a working relationship with internal and external stakeholders;
- Prepare reports for student intake, vacation work, performance and placement;
- Schedule partner meetings as required;
- Assist with travel arrangements, where required.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A national diploma in Human Resource Management/Industrial Psychology or related field with at least one year work experience in an administration and coordination role within the graduate development space;
- Experience using Microsoft Office;
- Must be willing to travel in South Africa for work purposes, as and when required;
- Driver’s licence.
