COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST: VOICE COMPUTING
 
About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Computational Linguist in the Voice Computing Research Group within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to  undertake research in computational linguistics (CL) with a focus on human-computer interaction (HCI) with systems, products, services and tools relating to human language technology (HLT) in a Research and Development (R&D) environment; covering the end-to-end HCI workflow of requirements elicitation and analysis, solution design and testing, user evaluation and feedback, with the aim to support the commercialisation of voice computing (VC) products and services. Key responsibilities:
  • Manage research on Computational Linguist and Human-Computer Interaction;
  • Analyse, design, develop, implement and evaluate new and/or legacy user experience and usability methodologies to ensure new solutions address user needs and to inform business decisions pertaining to VC products and services, following an agile (iterative) approach;
  • Lead the elicitation of detailed requirement specifications, business requirement specifications, functional and non-functional requirements, and the development of use cases, personas, and user stories;
  • Guide research and development projects relating to CL and HCI with the VC domain, guides troubleshooting of problems, and directs the implementation of projects, according to best practice;
  • Direct the integration of various areas of CL and HCI-related research to develop new tools and technology and improve existing tools and technology;
  • Conduct various forms of both qualitative and quantitative research, including questionnaires/surveys, interviews, focus groups, concept/prototype testing, A/B testing, and others, with both users and clients/stakeholders. Identifies and recruits’ participants for research. Builds and manages user panels as required. Analyses and presents research findings;
  • Collaborate with HCI and natural language processing (NLP) team members, product owners, development teams, and other stakeholders to design and deliver on research needs and influence the user experience, maximize technology capabilities, and deliver on business goals;
  • Work with HCI and NLP team members and supports project team members through input on technical aspects, advice, guidance, and coaching;
  • Support new avenues of knowledge application in VC. Contributes to proposals for internal/external clients which source research funding;
  • Liaise with clients and other stakeholders to ensure that the outcomes of projects meet the needs of the stakeholders;
  • Understand and respond to the needs and requirements of clients;
  • Manage a portfolio of R&D projects, often integrating approaches across several fields of research or disciplines. Assist in developing a human-computer interaction (HCI) research strategy for the research group.
 
Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in computational linguistics, linguistics, computer science, human-computer interaction (HCI), human-centered design (HCD) or related fields with at least one year experience in designing and executing research and/or projects, CL/HCI experience will be advantageous.
  • Experience in the following will be advantageous:
    • Research on CL systems, voice systems, machine learning or artificial intelligence-driven systems;
    • Specialised HCI software tools, including prototyping tools.
  • Experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative user research.
  • Knowledge of the following is required/will be advantageous:
    • Wireframing and prototyping software (such as Balsamiq);
    • Scripting language such as Python;
    • African language linguistics;
    • Desktop and/or mobile user interface design processes and methodologies;
    • Information architecture and/or user experience design;
    • User testing processes;
  • Evidence of successful and impactful research in the field of CL/HCI by the applicant.
  • Evidence of ongoing application of new/improved CL/HCI-related methodologies or tools.
  • Familiarity with NLP toolkits such as NLTK.
  • Working in a CL/HCI team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research ethics.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact efficiently with diverse teams of people (end-users, clients, researchers, developers and engineers).

    • Systems Engineering;
    • Simulation modelling and decision support;
    • Situational awareness system and operational command centre development;
    • Software Engineering;
    • Systems Integration;
    • Knowledge of military capability, and capability-based planning principles and application in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

SENIOR/PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER – CLIMATOLOGIST
 
About the Job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior/Principal Researcher: Climatologist in the Climate and Air Quality Modelling research group within the Smart Places Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for dynamical and statistical analysis of the regional and global climate model simulations performed by the group, for both present-day and future climate, with the purpose of enhancing the understanding of African circulation dynamics. The incumbent will also be responsible for a research focus on the improvement in climate change projection systems and the downscaling of both seasonal forecasts and climate change projections, towards generating tailor-made prediction/projection products that benefit end-users. The evaluation of model forecast skill (seasonal time scale) and the reliability of projections of future climate change will be key components of the incumbent’s work. This position is based in Pretoria.
 
About the Group:
The CSIR Smart Places Cluster’s Climate and Air Quality Modelling research group conducts research into understanding the changing planet, by providing insights into the drivers, variability, trends and changes of the Earth system as it relates to the African continent. Gaining this understanding involves numerical modelling of the climate system as well as modelling the impacts of climate variability and change on various sectors (e.g., agriculture, forestry, water, ecosystem services, air quality and environmental health). This modelling is critical both regionally and as a contribution to the global community. Climate modelling activities include short-range weather forecasting; seasonal forecasting; the projection of global and regional climate change and paleo-climate simulation.
The research group typically engages in large multi-disciplinary projects, which are often focused on finding adaptation solutions that will make it feasible for South Africans, and Africans, to live and thrive within a changing climate system. Climate and application modelling are therefore performed at spatial and time scales that can directly inform adaptation studies.

Key responsibilities:
  • Lead the research group’s development of improved seasonal forecast and decadal-predictability systems;
  • Develop and apply dynamical and statistical downscaling procedures of seasonal forecasts and climate simulations to obtain predictands such as streamflow and crop yield;
  • Study the dynamics of Southern African inter-annual and decadal variability under present-day and future forcings;
  • Act as the interface between climate modelling specialists and application modellers within the CSIR and other institutions;
  • Lead proposal writing in the fields of climate change and climate variability in the active pursuit of CSIR contract research;
  • Mentor and formally supervise the post-graduate research of candidate-researchers and researchers within the research group.
 
Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • A Doctoral degree in meteorology/climatology or related field with at least five years’ experience in the analysis of four-dimensional climate model simulations and observed/reanalysis data sets;
  • Must also have at least five years’ in the calculation of climate statistics and statistical model verification;
  •  Knowledge of clustering techniques based on methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Self-Organising Maps (SOMs) will be a particular advantage;
  • Experience in the use of process-based models and statistical approaches for regional downscaling of climate simulations and seasonal forecasts to predictands such as crop yield and streamflow;
  • Experience in scientific programming (preferably Fortran, C, Python or R) and data manipulation and visualisation (e.g. in GrADS and GIS environments);
  • Working knowledge of Linux operating systems;
  • A recent and extensive publication record in the fields of southern African climate variability, climate change, seasonal forecasting and related downscaling techniques;
  • Demonstrable skills in the communication of climate science to the general public, stakeholders and policy makers;
  • Demonstrable experience and success in attracting R&D funding and the successful management of research projects;

    • Robotics Research and Development (R&D) or a related field; 
  • A Doctoral degree in mechatronics, mechanical, aerospace engineering, robotics, or computer science will be advantageous;
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills, including the publication of technical outputs;

    • Good understanding of the sensors, actuators, and algorithms contributing to aerial autonomy;

Business Development Leadership

  • Develop business-aligned research development and innovation programs;

  • Provide scientific leadership to staff in the research group by means of an excellent grasp of the field and by ensuring quality scientific outputs and the professional development and transformation of the group’s scientific capacity;
  • Promote a culture of scientific excellence in terms of both quality and delivery;
  • Lead the research in the validation of innovative/alternative/new materials for use in road construction; 
  • Networking ability both nationally and internationally, and proven networks within all aspects of transport infrastructure design, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation;
  • Proven contract and project management experience on medium to large-scale projects, preferably involving multi-disciplinary research and development, both in South Africa and international;
  • Lead the development, application and transfer of processes and technologies for the design, construction and maintenance of roads;
  • Lead research conducted by the group whilst conducting Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS) testing on specific roads;
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers and other professionals in the research group.
 
Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • A Masters degree in civil engineering (pavement engineering) or material sciences; with a minimum of five years experience in the following fields related to road engineering/sciences:
    • materials and modelling:
    • asphalt technology
    • performance assessment and modelling
    • construction and maintenance
    • risk and vulnerability assessment
    • forensic investigation
    • procurement/contractual models
    • infrastructure funding alternatives
    • asset management
    • sustainability science (circular economy)
  • Excellent report-writing skills;
  • Track record of research outputs published in peer-reviewed journals, books or conference proceedings;
  • Effective communication skills (oral, written and presentation), including excellent communication in English;
  • Skills in staff motivation and performance management;
  • Analytical skills with a problem-solving, solution-seeking orientation;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Computer literacy and experience in using standard software packages; programming skills will be an advantage;
  • All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

MAINTENANCE PLANNER
 
About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for Maintenance Planner in the Facilities Management and Security Services (FM&SS)PortfolioThe incumbent will be responsible to providmaintenance and technical services work through job scoping, resource allocation, procurement of materials and services and ensure implementation of works timeously. To use the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), asset register and maintenance tasks to ensure all equipment is maintained to requirements. To monitor and generate reports on maintenance performance for presentation during planning and scheduling meetings with maintenance supervisors and Management. The position is based in Pretoria.
 
Key responsibilities:
  • Implementation of maintenance strategies and developing maintenance procedures
  • Utilize latest Maintenance Management tools to ensure effective maintenance of all assets.
  • Proactively manage communication and relationships with all customers. Act as liaison between customers and FM&SS staff on FM&SS related issues
  • Apply the latest maintenance safety technologies to ensure best-in-class maintenance safety performance and statutory compliance.
  • Develop detailed work packages from preventive maintenance routine (PMR) findings and corrective maintenance activities for all maintenance teams.
  • Analyse and screen corrective maintenance (CM) job cards and burning maintenance issues for opportunities to perform root cause failure analysis to prevent future failures. Coordinate root cause analysis.
  • Attend to procedural and equipment issues that arise and require engineering evaluation and direction to improve specific maintenance procedures.
  • Analyse spare parts inventory requirements and continuously improve inventory control.
  • Compiling of weekly reports for presentation and discussion at planning and scheduling meetings to assist supervisors with backlog management.
  • Implement FM&SS’s procurement requirements for spares, materials, and outsourced work.
  • Update maintenance tasks per asset to capture any changes and improvements and ensure job cards from the CMMS always have current information.
 
Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • National Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering with at least three years Maintenance Planning experience.
  • Supervision of skilled maintenance trades,
  • Good organizational skills,
  • Experience in analysing trends in performance parameters, 
  • Computer literacy, and
  • Knowledge and experience in use of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) will be advantageous.

MASTER’S STUDENTSHIP: 5G AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Master’s Studentship: 5G and Energy Efficiency in the Spectrum Access and Management Innovation research group within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions (NGEI) Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for undertaking research and development in 5G and Energy Efficiency. This position is based in Pretoria.

Research area:
The research and development in this studentship focus on novel methods, models and solutions to enhance the efficiency of energy utilisation in the fifth generation (5G) and beyond wireless networks. The following are some of the research focus areas:
  • Considering energy efficiency in open Radio Access Network (RAN);
  • Radio Access Network (RAN) slicing from the energy consumption perspective;
  • Towards energy-efficient 6G Radio Access Networks;
  • Energy and cost savings with antennas for 5G and beyond;
  • An energy cost perspective in optimising wireless coverage in rural areas; and
  • Energy versus physical layer security in 5G and beyond.
 
Key responsibilities:
  • Plan and prepare a research proposal on a topic aligned with the research area. The proposal is to be approved by both the CSIR and the university;
  • Prepare a written literature overview of the current state-of-the-art relevant to the research area;
  • Perform original research to solve the open research problem that the student identified in his/her proposal;
  • Produce sufficient quality and quantity of peer-reviewed research publications based on the research topic;
  • Compile the Masters’ thesis and defend the work successfully;
  • Contribute to extra activities that may be outside the scope of the Masters’ research, as per the needs of the research group. The amount of such work shall be limited to 20% of the total time.
 
Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • An Honour’s degree in electronic/computer engineering, computer science, or a related/relevant field.
    • All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
    • Aggregate university grade of 75% or above;
  • Knowledge of telecommunications systems, wireless communications systems, software-defined radios, networks and mobile networks will be advantageous;
  • Understanding of and experience in electronic circuits and especially radio frequency/microwave/mm-wave design will be advantageous;
  • Strong analytical skills including good mathematical and statistical ability; knowledge of signal and digital signal processing, MIMO and coding will be advantageous;
  • Must be computer literate and have good programming skills, preferably in C/Python; knowledge of coding in Matlab or Octave or related engineering/mathematical software packages will be advantageous;
  • Knowledge of and experience in Open-Source development tools and an understanding of the Linux OS will be advantageous;
  • Knowledge in 5G and other generations of mobile networks (e.g., 4G) will be advantageous;
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to interact efficiently with diverse teams of people.
