Overall Job Purpose : The incumbent will undertake specialised, advanced and integrated Geoscience research directly linked to developing/integrating geoscience datasets that will respond to South Africa’s national development imperatives. Furthermore, to play a leading and specialised role in the development of such geoscience datasets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake specialised geoscience investigations focussed on South Africa’s minerals and energy development spheres.
- Undertake specialised geoscience research and development toward characterising and understanding South Africa’s geodynamic processes.
- Undertake and lead the development and integration of fundamental geology, e.g., sedimentology, structure, metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, etc.
- Lead geoscience data mining, collection, interpretation, and modelling toward developing the knowledge and strength of South Africa’s developmental imperatives.
- Develop innovative and new methodologies that can be employed in South Africa’s development sectors.
- Compile and oversee the development of reports, maps and similar publications on the Council for Geoscience’s minerals and energy, and broader, geoscience programme.
- Report and present the findings of the Council for Geoscience’s integrated programme to key stakeholders.
- Make recommendations of the research at a regional, national, and inter-governmental level for both scientific and toward the benefit of South Africa’s national development sectors.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and supervision to more junior staff toward their professional development.
- Undertake critical review of Council for Geoscience products and methodologies, especially in the field of minerals and energy.
- Undertakes constant review and evaluation of the Council for Geoscience’s integrated programme.
- Contributes toward, and upholds, key quality assurance practices and methodologies in the Council for Geoscience.
- Undertakes varied geoscience activities and research and development toward meeting the mandate of the Council for Geoscience and the developmental agenda of South Africa.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
- Initiate, participates and takes a leading role in specialised and cutting edge geoscientific research, which involves:
- Data mining and data collection
- Data interpretation
- Compilation/computation of maps and/or geoscientific models
- Development of new methodologies
- Publications
- Compilation of reports and high-impact peer-reviewed technical papers or scientific publications
- Develop policies and make recommendations of the research at regional, national, inter-governmental level for scientific research or commercial purposes.
- Provide guidance and/or mentoring to junior staff in research, which involves the following:
- Develop and provide guidance in the formulation of research proposals, methodologies, data collection and data interpretation
- Revision and editing of reports, methodologies, models and maps on various projects
- Lead and monitoring progress on projects
- Evaluate projects results, edit reports of junior scientists for publication
- Participate and lead national or international review bodies tasked with reviewing advanced projects/programmes of national, scientific, or international significance
- Participate in independent research from data gathering, development of high-quality maps and reports, level editing of maps, reports, 3D models and other publications
- Develop, interrogates, and implements innovative and specialised conceptual models and techniques to enhance efficiency with regards to geoscientific work or programmes
- Design new methods and formulates theories; using integration of existing and new data to define mineralising systems for the purposes of mineral exploration. Geoscience data processing, interpretation and packing toward defining research areas/requirements and the establishment and review of solutions toward mandated research objectives and training and development plans.
- Integrate and package results toward applied policy-defining suggestions.
PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION/ PROJECT MANAGEMENT
- Design and lead varied projects simultaneously and guides other scientists in the implementation.
- Monitor risks and implement/make recommendations for corrective measures in line with the risk management plan to the Business Unit Manager.
- Identify and contribute to geoscience aspects during the compilation of tenders documents and proposals.
- Participate and/or lead commercial contract negotiations with external clients in line with the mandate from the Executive Management.
- Monitor expenditures in the project expenditure and ensures that the budget is expended in line with the evaluate progress of tasks and objectives of the projects, and report progress to Business Unit Manager.
- Lead the compilation of commercial and statutory project tender documents or contracts; geoscientific and, project financial and scheduling aspects
- Provide specialised advice to the Executive Management, and/or public and private sector organisations related field of expertise and may advise Executive Management on scientific and technical acceptability of maps, publications, and reports.
- Design and provide independent moderation or peer-review of post-graduate degrees or scientific publications
- Make presentations at a national and/or international conferences or related work forums. Editing or co-editing of a book or volume based on conference proceedings.
- Make science-based contributions to research publications as author or co-author in national and international journals.
- Produce high-quality publications in high-impact national and/or international journals as first author.
- Lead and participate in scientific discussions at national and international conferences involving matters of scientific importance either in a specific field or variety of fields.
- At times contribute to the national standard and best practice guidelines at relevant for a (forums)
- Develop and implement operating manuals for work procedures for ISO certification.
- Evaluate project results, reviews and edits project proposals and technical reports compiled by lower-level scientists.
- Mentor, coach and provide supervision and guidance in specialised research of lower-level scientists in regard to their geoscientific work and their progress.

QUALIFICATION, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Matric (Grade 12) and;
- BSc Honours Degree in Geology/ Exploration Geology/Geochemistry with a specialisation in integrated geoscience and 20 years’ experience in fundamental geology and/or economic/exploration geology.
- MSc in Geology/ Exploration Geology/Geochemistry with a specialisation in integrated geoscience and 15 years’ experience in fundamental geology and/or economic/exploration geology.
- PhD Degree in Geology/ Exploration Geology/Geochemistry with a specialisation in integrated geoscience and 10 years’ experience in fundamental Geology and/or Economic/Exploration geology;
- Experience in integrated geosciences, geodynamic modelling, mineral resource estimation and knowledge on various mineral resource reporting standards;
- Experience and ability to develop 3D geological, tectonic and mineral predictive modelling;
- Relevant publication record, especially in high-impact journals
- Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) registration with SACNASP
- NRF rating will be an added advantage.

Overall Job Purpose : The incumbent will undertake a wide variety of geoscience research focused on South Africa’s national development imperatives. The research and development will be especially focused on South Africa’s mineral and energy development sectors, largely through the collection and integration of various geoscience datasets.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Undertake various geoscience research activities, especially focused on fundamental geoscience and minerals and energy development.
- Compile integrated reports, maps, and databases on a wide variety of geoscience research themes.
- Report, publish and present on key findings of geoscience research undertaken.
- Advise on the findings of geoscience research, including toward key policy and regulatory framework, particularly in support of mineral and energy development.
- Advice, develop, and assist in guiding the procurement of key geoscience equipment and support.
- Participate in training, development and capitalisation of key geoscience skills and knowledge.
- Undertake field reconnaissance and data gathering exercises, particularly in support of fundamental geoscience and minerals and energy themes.
- Undertake additional fundamental geoscience research in support of the Council for Geoscience’s mandate.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
- Conducts limited geoscience research.
PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION/PROJECT MANAGEMENT
- Participates in statutory and/or commercial projects under supervision.
- Writes scientific reports under guidance.
- Geoscience data collection and capturing, map compilation and geoscience data collation under the instruction and guidance of a senior scientists.
STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS AND REPORTING
- Gives formal scientific or technical presentations of papers or reports, internally to other staff members and externally with guidance at conferences or symposia (typically once a year).
- Publishes research findings internally and or externally based on the nature of the project cycle.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Ensures that work is conducted within the required scientific (i.e. ISO) standards.

- Experience in geoscience data collection, e.g., geological mapping would be an added benefit.
- Registration with SACNASP will be an added advantage.
