SCIENTIST – ENGINEERING GEOLOGY X2
Peromnes Grade:    P08 (R 712 462.73 CTC Per Annum)
Location:  Head Office: Pretoria
Reporting Line: Manager: Infrastructure and Land Use
Overall Job Purpose:  The incumbent will undertake limited research in a wide variety of geoscientific fields including project implementation under guidance of more senior scientific staff within the Engineering and Geohazards Business Unit
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and Development
  • Conducts moderate geoscience research under guidance, which include data collection, quality control, analyses, interpretation and technical report compilation.
  • Resolves simple to moderately complex problems in a variety of geoscientific fields (with the primary focus on engineering geology) in line with standard operating procedures / approved methodologies under guidance or supervision.
Project Implementation / Project Management
  • Participates in statutory and/or commercial projects under supervision.
  • Undertake geoscience data collection and capturing, map compilation and geoscience data collation under guidance, including interpretations of a simple to moderately complex nature, primarily in the field of Engineering Geology.
  • Compilation of scientific reports under guidance.
  • Undertaken national geotechnical report reviews under guidance.
Stakeholder Relations and Reporting
  • Gives formal scientific or technical presentations of papers or reports, internally to other staff members and externally at conferences or symposia.
  • Publishes research findings internally and or externally based on the nature of the project cycle.
  • Provides limited scientific advice to public and private sector organisations related to geohazards.
Quality Assurance
  • Gives inputs to the development of quality documentation, and work within the requirements of the prescribed standards (ISO 9001 quality documentation)
Learning and Development
  • Undertake specific and requisite self-improvement learning/conferences and development through workshops/training courses.
  • Mentors and co-supervises entry level scientific staff and interns.
  • Ensure that project objectives, tasks and activities are implemented within budget and agreed timeframes
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Grade 12;
  • BSc Honours Degree in Engineering Geology (or relevant qualification with proven experience in the field of engineering geology) with at least 5 years’ experience in the engineering geology / geotechnical field.
  • MSc in Engineering Geology (or relevant qualification with proven experience in the field of engineering geology) with at least 3 years’ experience in the engineering geology / geotechnical field.
  • PhD in Engineering Geology (or relevant qualification with proven experience in the field of engineering geology) with at least 2 years’ experience in the engineering geology / geotechnical field.
  • Experience in the field of dolomite stability investigations will be an advantage.
  • Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) or Candidate Natural Scientist (Cand.Sci.Nat.) registration with SACNASP (Advantageous)
 
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
  • Entry- to mid-level working experience in the interpretation and application of engineering geology
  • Practical exposure and experience in working in the engineering geological environment such as conducting of geotechnical site investigations, interpreting geotechnical data and information and providing assistance in geohazard (dolomite) report reviews
  • Basic exposure in the interpretation and application of geoscience data in relation to engineering geology, geotechnical investigations and geohazard
  • Understanding of measurements, recording, processing, and representation of data in graphical or map format
  • Basic proficiency in the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and geotechnical software
  • Understanding and knowledge in the application of National Standards, industry guidelines and requirements for geotechnical site investigations
  • Basic proficiency in research on big data and data analytics in the geoscientific environment
  • Basic proficiency in conducting geoscientific research within the engineering geology and geohazard field of study
  • Basic to mid-level proficiency in compiling, editing and reviewing of geoscientific reports and maps
  • Basic proficiency in conducting interpretation, evaluation and assessment of research data
  • Must be able to implement ISO certification processes and standards
  • Must be able to conduct geological/geotechnical site investigations for various infrastructure development types, with guidance from more senior scientific staff, while focusing on geoscientific data management
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in data management, MS Office Suite, geotechnical data processing and basic modelling software, ArcGIS

JUNIOR ACCOUNTANT – ASSETS MANAGEMENT
Position Status :
 Permanent
Peromnes Grade : P08 (R 712 462.73 CTC Per Annum)
Location : Head Office (Pretoria)
Reporting Line : Manager: Asset Management
Overall Job Purpose : To manage and control financial, accounting and administrative functions of CGS fixed assets and the registers.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform monthly reconciliation of the asset clearing account.
  • Perform monthly reconciliation between the asset register and general ledger accounts.
  • Review of the GL asset accounts to ensure that there are no direct transactions.
  • Review the Work in progress accounts on any payments made and assess capitalization criteria and progress from the project managers.
  • Run depreciation and ensure correct calculation of the depreciation for all assets according to the CGS Asset policies and procedures.
  • Barcode all assets procured by CGS.
  • Update the asset register with additions, movements, and disposals.
  • Ensure that additions, write offs and disposals are identified, captured on the Fixed Asset Register, and accounted for in the correct financial reporting periods.
  • Conduct asset verification for Head Office and Regional offices.
  • Advise the business units with utilization of assets and assist with consolidation of asset utilisation reports.
  • Assist with monitoring of the Assets life cycle of CGS Assets.
  • Process the requests of new assets from the business units and advise accordingly.
  • Monitor regional asset activities and ensure update of the asset register.
  • Assist with Financial planning and budgeting for the business units/regions (Capex).
  • Ensure compliance with asset policies and procedures, PFMA, Treasury regulations, GRAP, IFRS
  • Respond to all assets internal and external audit queries. Prepare and submit monthly reports. Assist with inputs for preparation of Annual Financial Statements.
 
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Grade 12;
  • B Com (Accounting) or equivalent qualification an in-depth knowledge of IAS 16 and asset related GRAP standards.
  • Must have five (5) years or more Accounting, Asset Management and Finance experience.
  • Sound financial management skills and understand integrated risk management processes.
  • Extensive knowledge, experience, interpretation and application of accrual accounting and GRAP standards
  • Understanding of PFMA, Treasury regulations, IFRS and Financial policies
  • Computer literate, good knowledge of MS Word and must have Excel at mastery level

  • Proficient with Accpac or equivalent ERP financial system and any Asset system

Overall Job Purpose :      The incumbent will undertake limited research in a wide variety of geoscientific fields including project implementation under guidance of more senior scientific staff within the Engineering and Geohazards Business Unit
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and Development
  • Conducts limited geoscience research under guidance which include data collection, basic analyses and interpretation.
  • Resolves simple problems in a variety of geoscientific fields in line (in part) with SOP/research methodology under guidance or supervision.
Project Implementation/Project Management
  • Participates in statutory and/or commercial projects under supervision.
  • Geoscience data collection and capturing, map compilation and geoscience data collation under the instruction and guidance.
  • Compilation of scientific reports under guidance.
  • Undertaken basic geotechnical report reviews externally submitted as part of the national geotechnical report reviews function.

  • Gives formal scientific or technical presentations of papers or reports, internally to other staff members and externally with guidance at conferences or symposia.

STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS OFFICER
Position Status:  Permanent

Overall Job Purpose: To render effective and efficient professional support in the design and implementation of the stakeholder relations activities in the Council for Geoscience (CGS).
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operation Processes (Stakeholder Relations)
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of the stakeholder relations strategy, initiatives and activities to build and promote stakeholder relations.
    • Implement stakeholder engagement plans and projects in line with the agreed and established CGS strategy
    • Maintain a database of all CGS stakeholders
    • Implement stakeholder in-house support processes and structures
    • Carry out a stakeholder needs assessment and continuously monitor implementation progress against established targets
    • Coordinate the MoU/MoA process and ensure sign off and monitor the implementation thereof
    • Coordinate stakeholder engagement with key stakeholders to ensure ease of doing business and access to areas within stakeholder communities.
    • Coordinate and facilitate communication channels with internal and external key stakeholders to ensure proper messaging of CGS’ value proposition
    • Support the Implementation of projects that seeks to enhance CGS stakeholder relations
    • Ensure proper maintenance of relations and network with multiple stakeholders
    • Participate in collaborative assignments with the Marketing & Communications team in delivering stakeholder engagement strategies and operational plans
    • Proactively initiate opportunities for the CGS to network across the sector.
    • Coordinate and administer external stakeholder programs and effectively facilitate the implementation of relevant plans.
    • Invite the relevant technical managers to stakeholder events and ensure a one-stop information source for them.
    • Provide support in the collection of data, inputs and translate this into information and share with the relevant managers.
    • Monitoring stakeholder perceptions and experiences with CGS.
    • Drafting of various communications for internal and external purposes.
    • Drafting of relevant presentations and reports – as and when required.
    • Compiling and updating the Stakeholder Relations calendar of events and liaising with all stakeholders in this regard – speakers etc.
    • Generate and provide the necessary and required reports to the line of authority.
  • Stakeholder Relations
    • Build and maintain strong and sustainable relationships with all stakeholders through interaction, communication and targeted campaigns.
    • Gather and disseminate accurate and timely information to all relevant stakeholders
    • Participate in the various communications forums, meetings, etc.

    • Provision of an efficient administration service through careful and timeous planning, reporting and updating of all related information
    • Comply with processes required in terms of legislative and audit requirements in stakeholder

  • Minimum 5 years related experience in the same or similar position.
  • Understanding of multiple stakeholder management processes, i.e. Government, business and communities, multiple stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of the Council for Geoscience Act, 1993 and the Public Finance Management Act, 1999 and Treasury Regulations.
