The Council for Geoscience is a key component of the National Science and Technology System. It undertakes geoscientific research and provides geoscientific services to a variety of clients, including the state. The clientele base is national throughout the SADC region, and further afield, including North Africa, Asia and South America. We invite applications for the positions as listed below.

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL OFFICER: (CORE DRILLER) X2
Peromnes Grade : P12 (R 310 501.27 CTC Per Annum)
Location : Head Office (Pretoria)
Reporting Line : Manager: Technical Services
Overall Job Purpose : To support the core driller in drilling for mineral exploration and geoscientific research boreholes to execute and support geoscientific projects using multifunctional core drill rig, drilling equipment and related technology.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the core driller with the drilling operations and developing boreholes while executing geoscientific projects
- Assist with the day to day administration and record keeping.
- Proper handling and storage of core as per drilling procedures.
- Daily checks and maintenance of drilling equipment.
- Loading and offloading of drilling equipment’s at the head office and drilling sites.
- Setting up and dismantling of field camps at drill sites.
- Driving the vehicle necessary to move the drill rig and equipment to and from drill sites
- Adhoc tasks deemed necessary to support the drilling operations.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge and experience in core exploration drilling, focusing on minerals and energy theme such as gold, iron, uranium and coal.
- Knowledge and experience in the preparation of the drill muds and the inspection thereof.
- Knowledge and experience in preparation of the equipment needed for each type of drilling methods required.
- Knowledge and experience of borehole development and casing for mineral exploration
- Knowledge and experience in ensuring health and safety measures on and off drilling site
- Knowledge and experience of standard operating procedures related to drilling methods and operations.
- Knowledge and experience in recording data or information during drilling such as drilled core meters, gas detected, etc.
- Knowledge and experience with stick or mig welding, and gas cutting and brazing.
- Knowledge and experience of operating a truck mounted crane. Operator ticket or valid certificate to be supplied.
- Knowledge and experience of minor mechanical repairs such as replacement of air and fuel filters, etc.
KEY PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

- Communication skills (Oral and Written)
- Negotiation skills
- Customer orientation
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Must be physically fit e.g., ability to handle heavy equipment and machinery.
- Adherence to operation procedures as advised by the CGS and the client.
- Flexibility towards changes in priorities as determined by the supervisor/ project manager.
- Must have good self-discipline.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Grade 12 with pass in Mathematics and/or Physical Science
- Valid code driver’s license Code 10 (C1)
- Code 14 (EC) with PDP and experience of driving four axle, 8 x 4 heavy duty trucks will be added advantage
- One year experience in core drilling will be an added advantage
- Valid training certificates of drilling methods of core will be an added advantage.

Overall Job Purpose : To support the percussion/reverse circulation driller in drilling for
geotechnical assessment, groundwater studies and other geoscientific research boreholes using multifunctional reverse circulation and percussion drill rig, with related drilling equipment and technologies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the percussion and reverse circulation driller with the drilling operations and developing boreholes while executing geoscientific projects.
- Assist with the day-to-day administration and record keeping.
- Proper handling and storage of samples as per drilling procedures.
- Daily checks and maintenance of drilling equipment.
- Loading and offloading of drilling equipment’s at the head office and drilling sites.
- Setting up and dismantling of field camps at drill sites.
- Driving the vehicle necessary to move the drill rig and equipment to and from drill sites.
- Adhoc tasks deemed necessary to support the drilling operations.

- Knowledge and experience in drilling reverse circulation boreholes for mineral exploration.
- Knowledge and experience in preparation of the equipment needed for each type of drilling methods required.
- Knowledge and experience of ensuring health and safety measures on and off drilling site
- Knowledge and experience of standard operating procedures related to drilling methods and operations.
- Experience of recording data or information during drilling such as drilled sample meters, water strikes, cavities, etc.
- Knowledge and experience with stick or mig welding, and gas cutting and brazing.
- Proven experience of operating a truck mounted crane. Operator ticket or valid certificate to be supplied.
- Knowledge and experience of minor mechanical repairs such as replacement of air and fuel filters, etc.
