Reporting Line: Manager: Economic Geology

Overall Job Purpose: The incumbent will undertake cutting edge integrated and multidisciplinary geoscientific research and develop new projects and/or innovation methodologies which includes project management within the Economic Geology and Geochemistry business unit. Key to the role is the implementation of the integrated multidisciplinary mapping programme in line with the strategy of the CGS.
 
Key Responsibilities:
Research and Development
  • Initiates and participates in cutting edge geoscientific research in economic geology and geochemistry field, which involves:
    • Data mining and data collection;
    • Data interpretation; and
    • Compilation/computation of maps and/or geoscientific models
  • Development of new geoscientific research methodologies.
  • Compilation of reports and produce peer-reviewed technical papers or scientific publications.
  • Makes recommendations of the geoscientific research at regional, national, inter-governmental level for scientific research or commercial purposes.
  • Provides guidance and/or mentoring to junior staff in research, which involves the following:
    • Provide guidance in the formulation of research proposals, methodologies, data collection and data interpretation
    • Revision and editing of reports, methodologies, models and maps on various projects
    • Technical progress and financial monitoring on projects
    • Evaluates projects results, edit reports of junior and senior scientists for publication
  • Participate in national or international review bodies tasked with reviewing advanced projects/programmes of national, scientific or international significance.
  • Participates in independent research from data gathering, development of high-quality maps and reports, level editing of maps, reports, 3D models and other publications.
  • Undertake mineral economics and mineral systems studies
  • Develops, interrogates and implements innovative conceptual models and techniques to enhance efficiency in regard to geoscientific work or programmes.
 
Project Implementation/Project Management
  • Leads varied cutting edge projects simultaneously and guides other scientists in the implementation.
  • Monitors risks, implements and make recommendations for corrective measures in line with the risk management plan to the Business Unit Manager.
  • Identifies and contributes to geoscience aspects during the compilation of tender documents and proposals.
  • Participates and/or leads commercial contract negotiations with external clients in line with the mandate from the Executive Management.
  • Monitors financial expenditures within multi projects and ensures that the budgets are utilized in line with the approved activities, deliverables and objectives of the projects, and report progress to Business Unit Manager.
  • Leads the compilation of commercial and statutory project tender documents or contracts; geoscientific and, project financial and scheduling aspects
 
Stakeholder Relations and Reporting
  • Provides expert advice to the Executive Management, and/or public and private sector organisations related field of expertise and may advise Executive Management on scientific and technical acceptability of maps, publications and reports.
  • Provide independent moderation or peer-review of post-graduate degrees or scientific publications.
  • Makes presentations at a national and/or international conferences or related work forums. Editing or co-editing of a book or volume based on conference proceedings.
  • Makes science-based contributions to research publications as author or co-author in national and international journals.
  • Produces high-quality publications in national and/or international journals as first author.
  • Participates in scientific discussions at national and international conferences involving matters of scientific importance either in a specific field or variety of fields.
  • At times contributes to the national standard and best practice guidelines at relevant forums
 
Quality Assurance
  • Develops and Implements operating manuals for work procedures for ISO certification.
  • Evaluates project results, reviews and edits project proposals and technical reports compiled by lower level scientists.
 
Learning and Development
  • Mentors, coaches and provides supervision and guidance in research of lower level scientists in regard to their geoscientific work and their progress.
  • Initiates national or international training workshops /courses for junior staff to strengthen skills transfer staff in line with the business unit development plan.
  • Assist in identifying training needs and recommends to the manager
  • Evaluate the results, edits reports for publication by junior scientists, and prepares own work for publication by the CGS.
  • Supervises and provides guidance in the execution of projects by junior staff
 
 
Education and Qualifications
  • MSc or M Tech degree with at least 15 years relevant experience
  • PhD or D Tech degree with at least 10 years relevant experience
  • Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) registration with SACNASP
  • NRF Rating will be an added
 
Knowledge and Experience
  • Proven working experience in the interpretation and application of geoscientific mapping methodologies and mineral systems in economic geology and geochemistry context;
  • Proven working experience in the interpretation and application of geoscience data;
  • Practical exposure in the application of Economic Geology and Geochemistry tools and software;
  • Practical exposure and extensive experience in working in the geoscience environment;
  • In-depth knowledge of geological and geophysical, measurements, recording, processing, representation of data;
  • Competent in research on big data and data analytics in the geo-scientific environment;
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of complex geoscientific investigations and research independently within varied fields;
  • Proficiency in conducting advanced geoscientific research within the marine environment;
  • Proficient in compilation and high level editing of geo-scientific reports ad maps.
  • Proficient in conducting advanced interpretation, evaluation and assessment of research data.
  • Ability to evaluate and assess research work and reports of interns and junior scientists;
  • Able to compile and present geo-scientific research investigations at national forums and international forums.
  • Ability to develop and present geo-scientific project proposals.
  • Ability to mentor and coach other scientists and project team members.
  • Ability to implement ISO certification processes and standards
