Job Title: Junior Scientist – Seismologist / Seismic Analyst
Peromnes Grade: P09 (R562 256,38 CTC Per Annum)
Location: Pretoria Office
Reporting Line: Manager: Engineering and Geohazards

Overall Job Purpose: To undertake seismic analysis and assist in the review of seismic analysis produced by other team members; to conduct research into and/or execute on more advanced seismic analysis methods such as fault plane solutions/focal mechanisms, stress inversions, moment tensor terminations, moment magnitude analysis, etc.; and compile these into electronic bulletins and/or reports; to assess ground shaking after large seismic events, undertake research in the field of seismology, and implement projects under the guidance of more senior scientific staff within the Engineering and Geohazards Business Unit.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Research and Development
    • Conduct limited geoscience research under guidance which includes data collection, basic analyses, and interpretation.
    • Resolves simple problems in a variety of geoscientific fields inline (in part) with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) / research methodology under guidance or supervision..
  • Project Implementation/ Project Management
    • Participates in statutory and/or commercial projects under supervision.
    • Geoscience data collection and capturing, map compilation, and geoscience data collation under the instruction and guidance.
    • Compilation of scientific reports under guidance.
  • Stakeholder Relations and Reporting
    • Gives formal scientific or technical presentations of papers or reports, internally to other staff members and externally with guidance at conferences or symposia (typically once a year).
    • Provide geohazard assessment feedback to State Authorities.
    • Publishes research findings internally and/or externally based on the nature of the project cycle.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Work within the requirements of the prescribed work standards (i.e. ISO and international best practice)
  • Learning and Development
    • Undertake specific and requisite self-improvement learning and development activities through workshops/training courses.
 
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BSc Hons or B Tech degree in either Seismology or Geophysics.
  • Preference will be given to incumbents with an added background in geology as well as seismic analysis.
  • MSc/ M Tech/Ph.D./ D Tech degree in Seismology or Geophysics with a geology background will be advantageous.
  • Registration with SACNASP (candidate or professional) will be advantageous.

 
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Entry-level working experience in the interpretation and application of seismology and seismic analysis.
  • Basic exposure to seismic analysis, including moment tensors, stress inversion, moment magnitude, and focal mechanisms.
  • Basic exposure in the interpretation and application of geoscience data concerning engineering geology and geohazards, structural geology, and tectonics from a seismological point of view.
  • Understanding of measures, recording, processing, and representation of seismic and structural geological data in graphical or map format.
  • Basic proficiency in the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and seismological software such as SEISAN or SeisComP.
  • Understanding and knowledge of international best practices, industry guidelines, and requirements for seismic analysis.
  • Basic understanding of research on big data and data analytics in the geo-scientific environment.
  • Basic proficiency in conducting geoscientific research within the seismology/ seismic analysis/ geohazards field of study.
  • Basic proficiency in compiling, editing, and reviewing geoscientific data, reports, and maps.
  • Basic proficiency in conducting interpretation, evaluation, and assessment of research data.
  • Must be able to implement certified ISO processes and standards.
