CHIEF SCIENTIST: GEOPHYSICS AND REMOTE SENSING
Peromnes Grade:
 P06 (R 1 086 862.30 CTC Per Annum)
Location: Pretoria Office
Reporting Line: Steam Lead – Geophysics and Remote Sensing
Overall Job Purpose:  To provide technical inputs into the Programme.


 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Research and Development
    • Initiates and participates in advanced geoscientific investigations, which involves geophysics and remote sensing data collection, processing and interpretation towards geological mapping,
    • environmental application, minerals mapping, and groundwater and land use studies.
    • Compilation/development of high-quality geoscientific maps, geophysical and remote sensing-derived model.
    • Development of new and innovative methodologies using geophysics and remote sensing data, using tools such as machine learning and other advanced techniques.
    • Compilation of technical reports and peer reviewed technical papers for scientific publications.
    • Recommending high-quality world-class research in the field of geosciences at national and international level.
  • Leading projects and providing guidance and mentoring to junior staff involved in geoscience research.
  • Formulate research proposals in data collection and data interpretation methodologies.
  • Evaluates projects results, edit reports of junior scientists for publication.
  • Participate in national or international review bodies tasked with reviewing advanced projects/programmes of national, scientific or international significance.
  • Participates in independent research that will lead to publications of high quality 3D interpretation models well versed in programming languages, such as Python.
  • Stakeholder Relations and Reporting
    • Provides advice to the Executive Management, and/or Reporting public and private sector organisations related to the, geosciences and its applications.
    • Makes presentations at national and/or international conferences or related work forums.
    • Makes science-based contributions to research publications as author or co-author in national and, international journals.
    • Produces high-quality publications in national and/or international journals as first author.
    • Participates in scientific discussions at national and international conferences involving matters of scientific importance either in a specific field or variety of fields within economic geology or water and environment or geoscience mapping.
  • Project Management
    • Implements tasks in line with the overall objectives of the projects on time and guides other scientists in the implementation.
    • Identifies and contributes to the compilation of tender proposals.
    • Participates and/or leads internal and commercial contract negotiations with external clients.
    • Compile and/or lead the compilation of commercial and statutory project tender documents or contracts.
    • Monitors expenditures in the project and ensures that the budget is expended in line with the objectives of the projects.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Evaluates project results, reviews and edits project proposals and technical reports compiled by lower level scientists.
    • Develops and Implements operating manuals for work procedures for ISO certification.
  • Development and Capacity Building
    • Provides supervision and guidance in research of lower level scientists in regard to their geoscientific work and their progress.
    • Initiates national or international training workshops /courses for junior staff to strengthen skills transfer staff in line with the business unit development plan.

  • Ability to conduct complex and advanced geo-scientific investigations and research independently within varied fields.
  • Ability to conduct high level editing of geo-scientific reports ad maps.
  • Ability to conduct advanced interpretation, evaluation and interpretation of research data. Ability to evaluate and assess research work and reports of other scientists and within a project team.
  • Ability to compile and present geo-scientific research investigations at national and international forums.
  • Ability to develop and present geo-scientific project proposals.
  • Ability to source/initiate commercial projects.
  • Ability to lead and manage projects and project teams
  • Ability to mentor and coach other scientists and project team members.
  • Ability to implement ISO certification processes and standards
 
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Highly computer literate with the proficiency to conduct either geo-scientific modelling, programming in languages like Python.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of legislation and industry norms, standards and guidelines relating to area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of geoscience disciplines (geology, geochemistry, and hydrogeology).
  • Valid driver's license.
 
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • PhD in a Geophysics and/or Remote Sensing plus 6 years' experience in Geophysics and Remote Sensing or MSc in a Geophysics and/or Remote Sensing plus 10 years' experience.
  • Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) registration with SACNASP.
