Job Title: Assistant Technical Officer – Geophysics X2
Peromnes Grade: Subject to finalisation of Job Evaluation
Location: Head Office (Pretoria)
Reporting Line: Manager Geophysics and Remote Sensing
Overall Job Purpose: The incumbent will undertake limited routine logistical and technical tasks under close supervision to support the generation of geoscientific information by data collection within the Geophysics and Remote Sensing business unit. This is an entry-level technical officer position.
Key Responsibilities:
Logistical and Technical Operations
- Assist with the planning, coordination and novice logistical implementation of tasks under supervision.
- Render basic technical support and assistance.
- Assist with the capturing of geoscience data in line with procedures.
- Resolves simple problems in a variety of logistical fields in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) or established methodologies under supervision.
- Perform sampling of soil, water, rocks under supervision of senior staff.
- Provide assistance in data & product preparation (e.g. basic map index of own work, field data transfer to specified templates etc.).
Project Implementation/Project Management
- Complete tasks and follow-up as directed and/or instructed.
- Escalate and report progress and/or any other technical problems to the senior staff
- Assist in conducting routine data gathering and collections.
- Perform basic/elementary technical- scientific functions and tasks under close supervision.
- Provide relevant and applicable data as per instruction.
- Assist in logistical support and setting up of field support/base camps during field work.
Stakeholder Relations and Reporting
- Liaise with internal clients under supervision.
- Participate in prescribed work collaboration assignment/projects as and when required.
Quality Assurance
- Perform all assigned work according to established Standard Operating Procedures.
Learning and Development
- Participate in Continuous Professional Development initiatives/interventions in order to keep up with new technologies and procedures.
- Complete and submit own Personal Development Plans under guidance of senior staff.
- Undertake specific and requisite self-improvement learning/conferences and development through workshops/training courses.
Knowledge and Experience:
- No previous experience required
- Basic understanding of the geoscientific research and methodologies
- Basic understanding of ISO processes and standards
- Basic understanding of routine data/sample collection techniques
- Basic understanding of sample preparation and analysis procedures
- Knowledge and understanding of a variety of sampling instruments
- Understanding of theory, principles and practices of routine laboratory standards
- Computer literacy

Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 with a pass in Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
