Primary Function: To be responsible for the Heritage Collections of the museum and to manage the 6 Curators of the various collections, the Conservator, Curator information and Librarian. To develop and maintain a dynamic collections policy, to it, and to evaluate motivations for acquisition accessioning and de-accessioning in the collections in terms such policy. To ensure the correct management implementation, compliance and the review of the City’s loan policy and procedure. To oversee loan requests and facilitate approvals. To oversee the conservation and adherence to museum standards of the museum, exhibition and storage facilities. To develop strategies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of items in the museum collections. To evaluate, prioritize and coordinate the conservation work for the various collections. To be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the response to public enquires or complaints with respect to the museum collections. To make the collections accessible to the public by contributing to the development of exhibitions, educational programmes, and other special projects. To assists with special projects and partnerships involving the use of the collections. To provide input to the promotion of the collections through marketing, publicity, educational programmes and tours, in conjunction with other units. To provide input for the museum’s annual capital and operating expenditure budget. To administer and monitor expenditure in accordance with COJ-approved policies and procedures. To ensure adherence to museum best standards, practice and ethics. To act as liaison between the City and other heritage bodes provincially, nationally and internationally. 
 
Key Performance Areas: Manage all Curators of the various collections, the Curator Info Management, the Librarian and the Conservator. Develop and maintain a dynamic collections policy, with input from all the curators and the Chief Curator, ensuring it is aligned with the museum vision, and to review it annually. Evaluate motivations for adding new items for the collections in terms of the collections policy. To ensure the correct museum procedures are followed in the collections processes (acquisition, accessioning, de-accessioning cataloguing, labelling, correspondence records, storage and location records, restoration, conservation loans, treatments etc.) Oversee provision of storage, exhibition and museum facilities to international museum standards. Management of the allocation Old Age Homes / Flats and other related Council owned unit at an operational level by assisting in the development of innovative strategies which will enhance and advance departmental objectives in line with its vision / mission. Assisting in the execution and managing of ad-hoc projects as required from time to time through the implementation of special programmes as and when they arise as per SMT directive. Consolidate reports on all allocation (Council Owned Stock) cases. Assist in overseeing continued strong relation with internal and external business units’ entities, key stakeholders and peers to ensure the correct focus and support around housing. Adhere to approved guidelines and regulations of the City of Johannesburg to address all issues pertaining to allocations. Building and maintaining strong relation with internal and external business units, entities, key stakeholder and peers to ensures the correct focus and support around housing. To efficiently and effectively manage the operational assets and resources of the subsection cost effectively in accordance with legislative framework of the City’s and procedure. Enhancing the effective of employees in order to enable achievement of objectives of the Sub- Section and manage the human resources. Financial Management and control. Providing quality report on the functions and performance of the subsection which are factual accurate and complete, timely and contributions to and support the overall reporting requirements. To complying with all relevant framework including the City’s code of ethics manage and mitigate risk effectively. 
 
Leading Competencies: Good coordinator; Ability to work under pressure and produce accurate reports within limited timeframes. High degree of interpersonal skills to interact with all levels of staff and external stakeholders. 
 
Core Competencies: Computer Literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel); good communication (verbal and written) and coordinating skills required.
