LIBRARIAN: JOHANNESBURG ART GALLERY 
DEPARTMENT: Community Development

REMUNERATION: R24 119,71 pm (basic salary, excluding benefits) 
LOCATION: Between Klein & King Georg Street 
 
Minimum Requirements: 
• H Dip Ed; H Dip Lib, Degree in Archival Studies, Library Science or Information Management (NQF level 7); 
• Computer Courses, including URICA database; 
• 2 - 4 years’ experience in a similar environment. 
 
Primary Function:
Manage, maintain and develop a specialist art library for a major art museum. Provide a professional and efficient reference service to all users. Oversee library’s annual budget. Supervise immediate assistant, voluntary and field workers, as well as users. Select and purchase information resources, including eResources.
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Manage and maintain library archives for research purposes by members of staff and the public, educators, students, learners, national and international art institutions; 
• Expand the library’s facilities for the benefit of all users; 
• Distribute incoming art-related data to members of staff; 
• Manage all library enquiries from members of the public, art educators, voluntary guides, field assistants, national and international researchers and institutions, NGOs, local, provincial and national art departments and state libraries; 
• Supervise groups of school learners, Technicon and University students visiting the library for research purposes; 
• Oversee the budgets for periodicals and subscriptions, books and book-binding in accordance with Council’s purchasing and payment policy; 
• Maintain the museum’s catalogue exchange programme with local and overseas institutions; 
• Process current and new publications; 
• Attend weekly Metro Library Bibliographic Services meetings; 
• Upgrade all books old and new on URICA electronic bibliographic database on old to DDC16@AACR; 
• Catalogue current and new publications on a computerized system; 
• Scan bibliographic items to establish subject content; 
• Download information from SABICat and WorldCat; 
• Evaluate access points on copy record; 
• Assess bibliographic database; 
• Improve access by continually maintaining, upgrading and correcting records; 
• Establish correct from of access points for authors, corporate authors, series and subject headings; 
• Manage Library Staff; 
• Writing contributions to annual reports, JAG newsletter, and information material; 
• Tend to routine operational requirements of the Gallery Library in line with ACH Museum Standards.

• Grade 12 plus National Diploma in history of art or fine art or qualification in education at NQF level 6; 
• 1 – 3 years’ experience in a museum environment with museum education and tour guiding and computer skills and in-depth knowledge of international museum guidelines and local government protocol. 
 
Primary Function:
Develop the practical component of museum education directed towards the youth using the permanent collection as a teaching aid, as well as a catalyst for art appreciation lessons; to initiate innovative projects; to compile education material, and to oversee facilitators hired to assist with the diverse activity programmes held throughout the year. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Manage general enquiries from members of the public; 
• Develop innovative programmes to suit new audiences; 
• Market the education programme for the benefit of visitors;

Minimum Requirements: 
• Grade 12 plus National Diploma in Museum Management at NQF level 6; 
• 3 – 5 years’ experience in a museum environment with curatorial experience, knowledge of geological, natural science collection, and computer skills including database use. 
 
Primary Function:
Collect objects reflecting the geology in order to provide a wide-ranging, in-depth museum collection that is both information-rich and aesthetically pleasing, and accessible to the public. Research and document new items added to the History Collection to enhance their heritage and cultural value and organize them so that they can be easily and usefully retrieved by those who wish to use them. Store, preserve and conserve and protect the Geology Collection to protect the museum’s assets from deterioration or other loss and to preserve the nation’s heritage for the future. Answer queries, prepare exhibitions and administer loans to make the collection accessible to the public, while at the same time protecting and preserving the items. Assist with marketing, publicity educational programmes and tours. Provide input to the budgeting process to care for the collection, and to enhance the collection by adding to it. Contribute to museum policy to plan ahead to mitigate risks in the collection. Manage the curatorial assistant to look after the collection properly.

• BA (Fine Arts, Curatorial Studies or BA majoring in History of Heritage) or BA majoring in history of Art (NQF Level 7); 
• 3 years’ experience in a museum or curatorial environment with research and computer skills. 
 
Primary Function:
Oversee the museum’s valuable collection of traditional Southern African Art. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Manage the collection; 
• Source acquisitions to fill gaps in the collection; 
• Undertake research and contribute to the history of work in the collection; 
• Coordinate exhibitions of work in the collection; 
• Initiate exhibitions of work from external sources; 
• Attend internal staff meetings; 
• Contribute to the department’s scorecard; 
• Provide data for the museum’s newsletters; 
• Administer process for proposed acquisitions to be viewed by advisory committees; 
• Manage correspondence related to acquisitions; 
• Supervise donations of work; 
• Manage requests for loans of work in the collection;

• Represent the museum on professional committees by attending local conferences/workshops/lectures;
