Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
KPA 1 – Protected Area Management and Integrated Catchment Management
- Assist Reserve Management to achieve effective protected area management and expansion of the protected area estate aligned to relevant strategic plans.
- Demonstrate strategic capability and leadership and implement the protected area management plan and associated subsidiary and annual plans of operation, including monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
- Interpret and implement applicable biodiversity, conservation, financial and administrative policies, plans, systems, standard operating procedures and guidelines.
- Assist Reserve Management to achieve effective Integrated Catchment Management aligned to relevant strategic and operational plans and mitigate risk.
- Assist Reserve Management with effective biodiversity management to integrate conservation, access and heritage management, implement sustainable utilisation and identify and mitigate risks.
- Assist Reserve Management with conservation operations and monitoring at protected area and landscape level and ensure progressive operationalisation of various CapeNature initiatives.
- Assist Reserve Management with progressive Integrated Catchment Management, with regards to invasive species, fire, and fuel load management.
- Undertake project management and implement contract management.
- Manage infrastructure maintenance schedules.
- Prepare progress reports as per agreed timeframes and report on the implementation of work plans.
- Prepare site level data to inform annual operations plans and prepare relevant plans with Reserve Management.
KPA 2 – Human Resource Management and Occupational Health and Safety
- Manage the Anysberg staff component in line with applicable legislative frameworks, policy, and procedure to ensure a highly productive and motivated team.
- Implement performance management.
- Ensure that targets for the number of Full Time Equivalents (FTEs) appointed at Anysberg Nature Reserve are always met.
- Prepare and submit quality reports, attendance registers, standby pre-approvals and claims, subsistence and travel claims, overtime pre-approvals and claims in the prescribed formats timeously.
- Implement and adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Act policy and procedure and ensure sound incident reporting and investigation.
KPA 3 – Finance and Administration and Asset / Inventory Management
- Implement sound financial and administration management in accordance with applicable legislative frameworks, policy, and procedure.
- Implement and adhere to procurement policy and procedure.
- Support effective financial, supply chain management, asset, fleet, and administration management for the Anysberg Nature Reserve.
- Implement asset and inventory stock management and control.
KPA 4 – Environmental Education and Awareness and Stakeholder Management
- Implement Environmental Education and Awareness as per strategic plans, subsidiary plans and annual plans of operation.
- Facilitate access and citizen science at the Anysberg Nature Reserve.
- Play an active role in the Anysberg Protected Area Advisory Committee.
- Maintain a sound relationship with neighbours and researchers.
- Support Reserve Management in the collaboration with neighbours and relevant stakeholders to collectively address land and / or water use activities that may have a detrimental impact on the Anysberg Nature Reserve.
KPA 5 – Compliance Monitoring and Law Enforcement
- Implement effective compliance monitoring and law enforcement in Anysberg Nature Reserve and the Zone of Influence to protect biodiversity and promote voluntary compliance.
- Undertake regular patrols and implement rapid response / contingency plans.
- Maintain the compliance and enforcement monitoring database and prepare monthly reports.
REQUIREMENTS:
- National Diploma in Nature Conservation / equivalent qualification at NQF 6 in a Nature Conservation field.
- At least three years’ experience in the nature conservation sector.
- Appropriate ICS 200/300 training.
- Project management experience.
- A valid EB (08) driver’s license, willingness to travel regularly and ability to drive on 4x4 terrain.
- Experience working with and fostering good relationships with local communities.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, after hours and perform stand-by duties.
- Knowledge of environmental legislation.
- Thorough working knowledge of MS Office and GIS packages such as QGIS.
- Physical fitness to perform duties under physically demanding conditions and rugged mountainous and coastal terrain.
- Strong leadership and conflict resolution skills.

- Assist with gate guard duties when gate guards are on training or engaged with other duties as assigned by management
- Monitor and manage visitor behaviour and report incidents
- Ensure CapeNature’s customer care principles are maintained and implemented
- Assist with guest check-in and check-out procedures
- Assist with search and rescue operations in keeping with protocols and procedures
- Assist stakeholder engagement officers and field rangers with the implementation of environmental education and awareness programmes
- Perform Environment Control Officer (ECO) duties for film / photo shoots and events
KRA 3 – MAINTENANCE OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND EQUIPMENT
- Ensure the terrain is clean, neat and tidy at all times
- Undertake and/or assist with structure protection of office and eco-tourism nodes
- Manage stores and associated assets
- Identify maintenance needs and assist with the development of maintenance and repairs schedules:
- Office buildings and stores, accommodation units, camping and picnic areas, ablutions and pools
- Roads, trails, walkways and boardwalks
- Fences, gates, booms and access management structures, and other infrastructure, e.g. water reticulation systems, boreholes pumps, sewer systems

Job Description

CapeNature seeks to appoint a dynamic and committed individual to undertake and assist in the Talent Optimisation unit. This position will report directly into the Talent Optimisation Manager in Human Resources and will be responsible for amongst others, Performance Management, Bursary administration and training.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
KRA 1: CapeNature Bursary Fund Management
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date bursary records, reports, and progress tracking systems.
- Organise, manage, and update all bursary-related documentation and content.
- Implement and maintain a structured feedback mechanism to monitor bursary recipient progress.
- Design, develop, and manage an automated online bursary application and tracking system.
- Develop and manage the categorisation and deliver on the overall strategy for training interventions.

Job Description
CapeNature seeks to appoint a professional, competent, innovative, and energetic candidate to its Team Leader: Ecologist position. The candidate should have well developed interpersonal, communication and writing skills coupled with a high level of professionalism. The Team Leader: Ecologist is responsible for reporting on biodiversity and the implementation of Strategic Adaptive Management Models through the development of plans, systems, and strategies for conservation in the Western Cape. The candidate will lead a team of ecologists and ecological technicians and must ensure cohesion and teamwork to get results.
The Team Leader: Ecologist works to ensure that biodiversity conservation knowledge and planning systems are integrated into CapeNature’s Conservation Operations and protected area management through strengthening intergovernmental cooperation mechanisms, maximising the potential of strategic partnership projects, and supporting efficient uptake of conservation intelligence outputs within, and external to CapeNature.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
KRA 1: Manage, develop and integrate knowledge, planning, and monitoring systems.
Lead and contribute to the development of an annual Western Cape State of Conservation Report.
Lead the development of the five-yearly Western Cape State of Biodiversity Report.
Ensure the current and accurate taxonomic information is provided in the revision of:
Biodiversity and Protected Area Management Plans.
the five-yearly Catchment to Coast Strategy.
the five-yearly Western Cape Biodiversity Spatial Plan.
KRA 2: Manage, develop and integrate legislation, policies, strategies and systems.
Ensure timeous, lawful, compliant, and consistent authorisations for biodiversity use.
Provide current and accurate scientific data to inform the development of Evidence-based Non-Detriment findings for priority Western Cape CITES and TOPS listed species.
Ensure current and accurate scientific information informs the development of:
Western Cape Biodiversity Legislation
CapeNature Legislative Policies.
Biodiversity Governance Position Statements.
Ensure current and accurate scientific information informs Biodiversity and Environmental Legislation distributed for comment.
KRA 3: Generate impact through the enablement, development and integration of leading-edge technologies, practice, policy, science, and innovation.
Contribute to and mainstream the implementation of an effective web-based integrated conservation and biodiversity data management system with strategic partners, biodiversity research entities and other biodiversity institutions for CapeNature.
Mainstream leading edge, professional, formal scientific research (internally and externally), technical reports, memoranda, assessments and publications, peer reviewed scientific publications, presentations, and presentations at appropriate Provincial/National/International Biodiversity Conservation Conferences to advance the practice of biodiversity conservation.
KRA 4: Manage, engage and collaborate with strategic partners and fora.
Represent CapeNature’s mandate and interests on appropriate National and Provincial Forums.
Mainstream and support the prioritisation of strategic partnerships and finalisation of Memoranda of Agreement/Understanding.
Facilitate the development of appropriate external funding proposals and implement externally funded projects when applicable.
KRA 5: Manage, develop and deploy biodiversity capability and capacity.
Lead and support the development, deployment, and integration of Biodiversity Capabilities products and expert decision support into Conservation Operations.
Lead, develop, contribute to, and deliver stakeholder capacity building and awareness about healthy natural ecosystems, habitats and landscapes, and ecosystem services.
Lead the mainstreaming and uptake of optimal procedures, practices and processes for effective biodiversity monitoring and surveillance.
REQUIREMENTS:
Natural Science degree in the field of Conservation Science, Ecological Science, Biological Science or Zoological Science (NQF 7) with at least five (preferably eight) years’ professional post qualification experience.
Extensive knowledge of applicable relevant national and provincial biodiversity legislation and knowledge of multilateral environmental agreements.
Sound knowledge and understanding of the ecology, fauna, and flora of the Western Cape and the primary threats to its biodiversity.
Sound knowledge of biodiversity policies in the Western Cape.
Demonstratable project management and organizational skills. Applicants are required to upload an example of a completed project or plan for which they were they were responsible.
Excellent formal report and scientific writing skills. Applicants are required to upload a self-authored report/thesis/publication.
Demonstratable experience in workshop facilitation. Applicants are required to upload an example of where they were a primary workshop facilitator, (i.e. agenda, programme, and proceedings).
Proficiency in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
