Job Description
This position is suited to a dedicated conservationist who would like to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of biodiversity through marine protected area management, protected area expansion, law enforcement, environmental awareness and stakeholder relations on and around the De Hoop Nature Reserve

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Protected Area Management and Expansion
  • Provide strategic direction based on CapeNature's' vision, mission, goals and objectives.
  • Execute the day to day management activities related to the reserve as per the Protected Area Management Plan
  • Ensure implementation of the relevant legislation, policies, strategies, protocols and other prescripts as well as Annual Plan of Operations related to the Protected Area.
  • Ensure that legislative, policy and strategy changes are disseminated to relevant stakeholders (external and internal as may be required).
  • Submit inputs/comments on draft legislation, policies strategies, protocols other prescripts.
 
 Integrated Catchment Management
  • Ensure effective Integrated Management and expansion of the Protected Area Estate.
  • Ensure Integrated Catchment Management aligned with the relevant strategic conservation, access, tourism, heritage, and sustainable utilization plans and mitigate related risks.
  • Maximizing socio- economic benefits to communities’ surrounding Protected Area and increasing awareness of the importance of conservation, tourism, natural heritage and sustainable utilization.
  • Ensure effective compliance monitoring on and off reserves in order to protect biodiversity.
 
 
Job Creation
  • Implement Performance Management System
  • Effective recruitment, induction, orientation, deployment, training and mentoring of staff.
  • Provide opportunities for intra and inter landscape experiential training.
 
Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement on and off reserve.
  • Ensure that staff are empowered in order to carry out this function
  • Complete the Biodiversity Crime Unit Register monthly and submit to the Biodiversity Crime Unit Programme.
  • Compile case dockets for SAPS when required.
 
Finance and Admin
  • Manage/Monitor allocated budget.
  • Facilitate the management of all infrastructure and movables.
  • Compilation and submission of monthly/quarterly Reports.
 


REQUIREMENTS:
  • National Diploma Nature Conservation or relevant 3 years tertiary qualification
  • At least 5 years’ experience in conservation management.
  • Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive on 4x4 terrain.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation
  • No criminal record
  • 15 Nautical Mile Skipper license with at least 3 years experience
  • Marine Radio operator qualification
 
COMPETENCIES
  • Fire suppression
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, after hours and perform stand by duties
  • Thorough working knowledge of MS Office
  • Good written, verbal, interpersonal and communication skills in English
  • Physical fitness to be able to perform activities
  • Appropriate ICS 200/300 training
  • QGIS (or equivalent)
