The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated and self-driven professional to take responsibility for all aspects of the Biodiversity Education and Empowerment and Human Capital Development programmes at the Pretoria, Walter Sisulu, Lowveld and Free State National Botanical Gardens.
This position requires a three year tertiary qualification (National Diploma/Degree) in the environmental/conservation field with a minimum of five (5) years’ verifiable work experience in the environmental education field of which at least two (2) years must be at a supervisory level.
The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work at a sector level in human capacity development, especially in relation to teacher education. The candidate must be computer literate and have a working knowledge of MS Office programmes. Possession of a valid (unendorsed) Code B/EB driver’s license, with at least one year’s driving experience, is a further requirement.

The position requires a confident communicator who is able to relate well with a variety of stakeholders at all levels and have good interpersonal, analytical, report-writing, problem-solving, planning and organisational skills. The candidate should demonstrate insight in the relevant policies, strategies and research reports such as the Department of Basic Education’s Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (No.10 of 2004), the Environmental Sector Skills Plan, the national Biodiversity Human Capital Development Strategy (BHCDS) and others. Proven experience in working co-operatively as part of a team, and good communication skills in English and one other official language, will serve as strong recommendations.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop and manage the strategy for the Biodiversity Education, Awareness-raising, Outreach Greening and Capacity Development Programmes;
- Coordinate SANBI programmes with other relevant HCD initiatives;
- Manage human resources;
- Manage financial resources at the four national botanical gardens.
SANBI offers an annual salary of R417 552.00 (salary level 10) and additional fringe benefits.
