Job Summary
Position within Institutional Operations – Fund Accounting Team as a Fund Accounting Specialist

The purpose of the role is to contribute to and promote robust operating procedures within Fund Accounting to create an efficient and high performing team.
The successful candidate is required to have in depth knowledge and understanding of the accounting and analytical aspects of collective investment schemes, unitized vehicles, both local and offshore.
 
Job Responsibilities
The key functions included are:
•    Calculating the daily NAV of the Unit Trust, Pooled Products, Mutual Funds and Multi Manager Products and Bermuda Products
•    Review daily NAV of the Unit Trust, Pooled Products and Multi Manager Products and Bermuda Fund
•    Sound understanding of the valuation of offshore and local securities, including fixed income
•    Accurate calculations of fund and class daily expense including performance fees 
•    Oversight and understanding of corporate actions impacting fund nav
•    Optimization of reconciliations, Exception handling, Investigation of significant variances and effective resolution of reconciliation breaks and ad hoc challenges, 
•    Accurate processing on Asset Transfers across all Structured Products
•    Responsible for Fund payments 
•    Advanced understanding of the composition of fund holdings, fund benchmarks and performance fees
•    Preparing Fund Trial Balances and Nav analysis
•    Advanced understanding of unit transactions impact on income and capital prices
•    Attending to audit queries and ad hoc queries
•    Sound understanding of Income Distribution processes including the allocation of income per taxable income categories
•    Ensure Fund Accounting BAU is metric is maintained.

Experience and Education
•    Appropriate finance qualification: Chartered Accountant or BCom (Hons) with Accounting. Specialist qualification in financial services would be advantageous.

•    Oversight and understanding of corporate actions impacting fund nav
•    Self-driven with at least 5 years’ experience in Fund Accounting or
•    CA’s with audit exposure within Investment Management and Fund Operations

Purpose of the role
The position is within the Retail Operations division, an area responsible for processing transactions from clients and independent financial advisers, as well as providing administrative support for the firm’s retail investment offering.
The purpose of the role is to ensure the high service standard at Allan Gray is maintained through building strong client relationships and delivering excellent client service to our clients and independent financial advisers. You will be responsible for ensuring all incoming instructions are responded to and processed and any pending instructions are followed up on. You will report to a team leader, which requires you to work actively within a team but also independently.
 
Responsibilities
  • Checking and accurately processing all incoming or pending instructions. These include:
  • New business transactions, e.g. opening a new investment account
  • Existing business transactions, e.g. where a client adds or withdraws money or makes changes to their investment
  • Providing clients and advisers with a superior level of client service through call and email communications, e.g. responding on time and diligently to all requests from clients, advisers and internal business teams
  • Maintaining accurate record-keeping on internal systems of all interactions with clients and advisers
  • Knowledge of various legislative requirements relating to investment products
  • Supporting members of your team and the team leader, e.g. assisting with technical queries, workflow and processes
 
Job Specification
  • Relevant Business Degree and/or Job-Related Experience
  • Sound knowledge of the Life Insurance industry (including Pension Funds) and/or the Unit Trust industry would also be an advantage

Job Description
We are looking for a proactive and energised individual to assist with managing the tax function for the Group. The individual with be responsible for providing a wide range of tax advisory services to the business as well as ensuring compliance with operational requirements (including reporting) imposed by both local and foreign tax regulators. An important aspect of the role will be the support of independent financial advisers (IFAs) who place business with Allan Gray with a particular focus on cross border tax compliance and planning.
 
Responsibilities
  • Keep abreast of relevant tax related regulations and legislative changes or trends within the financial services industry in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Bermuda
  • Manage the tax advisory relationships with in-country counsel for ex-SA operations
  • Effectively manage relationships with the relevant local and foreign tax authorities answer tax related questions from the business and financial advisors and understand highly complex tax related problems
  • Prepare clear, sound, accurate reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations to management, legal/compliance and operational areas regarding new legislative and tax reporting requirements
  • Tax monitoring/audit of the business-related tax processes:
    • by performing a review of the control environment to ensure that sufficient and effective controls are in place to detect discrepancies and deviations from agreed processes and legislative requirements.
    • review operational reports to identify potential areas of concern/ gaps/ trends where tax monitoring/ additional controls may be required.
  • Provide input to the industry on behalf of the company (i.e. regulatory papers / industry bodies)
  • Continuously advise and provide training to internal stakeholders to ensure optimal awareness and competence with regards to new and existing tax legislation
  • Liaise with Clients/Financial Advisors and Operations teams regarding queries and topical tax issues
  • Interacting with internal stakeholders, industry bodies and authorities to ensure that IFAs interests are adequately addressed in engagement processes.
  • Supporting IFAs to understand and navigate topical legal and tax matters with an important bearing on their businesses and advice processes. The individual must be adept at presenting, drafting articles and case studies, and facilitating round-table discussions. 
 
Competencies and Skills
The successful candidate should have:
  • Knowledge of legislative requirements and tax laws specific to unit trust/LISP, long-term insurance and retirement fund business
  • Knowledge of local and international tax reporting requirements e.g. FATCA/CRS, DWT, IWT and IT3
  • A go-getter attitude with a pragmatic approach to systems and processes
  • Experience working with financial advisers and components of the financial planning process would be preferable.
  • Ability to operate and think on feet;
  • Ability to deal effectively with people at all levels;
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and manage own deliveries;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and reasoning;
  • Ability to assess complex tax law and derive a meaning and practically apply it to the business;
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills;
  • Strong attention to detail
 
Qualifications and Experience
  • BCom with HDip Tax Law or Master in Tax
  • Tax practitioner designation (TA(SA)) would be advantageous
  • Post Graduate Diplomas specialising in Certified Financial Planning (CFP), and/or Estate Planning would be advantageous
  • Technical tax advisory experience
