The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. The ARC-Small Grain (ARC-SG) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Bethlehem, Free State: 
 
RESEARCHER: CROP IMPROVEMENT 
Salary (R479 675 – R719 514 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Actively source new research opportunities and write proposals with national, regional, and international partners, 
 Acquire, utilise, and maintain germplasm, and develop elite breeding lines, 
 Develop and register cultivars, secure Plant Breeder’s Rights, and actively promote their commercialisation, 
 Improve efficiency and productivity of the breeding programme by optimizing the use and integration of new technologies with conventional breeding techniques, 
 Use Breeding Management System to manage accurate and detailed recordkeeping pertaining to the breeding programme, 
 Scientifically analyse, interpret, and report on research results and findings,
 Ensure effective technology transfer through on-farm trials/demos, information days, scientific and popular publications, and presentations, 
 Prepare and mange project budgets according to ARC policies, 
 Optimally utilise and supervise human resources in accordance with the ARC’s corporate values, vision, and safety, 
 Manage facilities and infrastructure pertaining to research activities, 
 Build and maintain relationships with national stakeholders and strategic partners to secure funds, 
 Supervise and mentor trainees and post-graduate students. 
 
Requirements:
 Ph.D. in Plant Genetics, Molecular Biology, Plant Breeding, Plant Science, Biotechnology, 
 Alternatively, MSc with 5 years minimum work experience with extensive publications or released cultivars, 
 Experience in Crop Improvement, 
 Good written and verbal communication skills, 
 A valid driver’s license.

CHIEF RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: GERMPLASM 
Salary (R479 675 – R719 514 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Initiates, coordinates, and manages projects. Coordinates project plan with the Programme Manager, 
 Manages people within projects and ensures optimal utilisation, 
 Conducts strategic planning of future resources, 
 Compiles and manages project budgets. Plans and coordinates technical projects,
 Manages project facilities, materials, and equipment, 
 Independently conducts specialised research/technical support, diagnostics, and other services across projects, 
 Manages data collection. Performs advanced analysis, and interpretation and makes internal and external recommendations, 
 Compiles detailed reports, provides comprehensive recommendations, and approves final reports, 
 Manages and ensures compliance with quality standards, 
 Presents results to stakeholders as an authority (advises/trains), 
 Optimises equipment and/or processes and/or systems, 
 Recommends and makes decisions regarding new technologies, 
 Renders expert diagnostic, technical and other services and consults at a national level, 
 Exploits intellectual property developments and assists in its development, 
 Identifies and pursues new business opportunities, 
 Develops technical capacity at an appropriate level, 
 Identifies and participates in own learning opportunities, 
 Ensures compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures, 
 Meet peer norm requirements for the specific field of expertise, by recognising authorship or contributions, 
 Magnitude of measurable outcomes (national and/or international). 
 
Requirements:
 Equivalent (NQF8) with 8 years applicable experience; or Equivalent NQF7) with 10 years applicable experience; or Equivalent NQF6) with 12 years applicable experience; or equivalent NQF5) with 15 years applicable experience in the following or related fields: Plant Genetics, Molecular Biology, Plant Breeding, Plant Science, or Biotechnology, 
 Experience in Germplasm Development or Crop Improvement, 
 Experience in the application of molecular biology techniques for crop development, 
 Experience in report and research proposal writing, 
 Computer literacy with good working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office packages, 
 High level of attention to detail and accuracy in all work, 
 Excellent organisational skills, 
 Good written and verbal communication skills,

The ARC-Grain Crops (ARC-GC) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic person to the following position at Potchefstroom, Northwest: 
 
Senior Manager Research: Grain Crops (5 years fixed term) 
Salary: (R932 021 – R1400 000) all-inclusive remuneration package p.a 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Provide scientific leadership in the research and development initiatives on Grain Crops (including, but not limited to, Maize, Sorghum, Cowpeas, Dry Beans, Groundnuts, Soybeans, and Sunflower), 
 Ensure availability of expertise to translate research and development initiatives, 
 Ensure effective functioning of the business unit, including support functions,
 Manage business risks by identifying and developing appropriate risk management strategies, including compliance, 
 Provide scientific and high-quality leadership in various aspects of agricultural development and technology transfer on Grain Crops, 
 Produce high-quality peer reviewed papers and oversee the production of papers by other members of the research team, 
 Exhibit knowledge and involvement in collaborative research with other institutions across the range of disciplines relevant to the work of the ARC, 
 Engage in strategic networking with national industry stakeholders, and national and international research funding agencies. 
 
Requirements: 
• Ph.D. in any related field of Field Crops (e.g. Crop Science, Agronomy, Planting Breeding, Plant 
Pathology, Entomology, and Biotechnology), 
• A 5-year post-qualification experience in Research and Development and 5 years in Senior Management or 10 years in the Middle Management level, 
• Strong research record, capacity for project and program management, partnership development, and collaboration, 
• Good communication (written and verbal) skills, 
• Performance and Financial management skills, individual leadership, and good negotiation Skills, 
• Experience in the management of personnel, 
• A valid Code B driver’s license,
