SENIOR RESEARCHER: CROP PROTECTION (PLANT PATHOLOGY)
Salary (R586 283 – R879 422 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Initiate, manage research programmes on subtropical fruit diseases,
Write publications and make presentations of relevance to subtropical fruit growers and the scientific community,
Provide research leadership and mentoring to research technicians, assistants and students,
Re-evaluate control programmes and detection techniques for diseases of subtropical crops and development of improved alternatives,
Identify viral and fungal pathogens and provide advice on control,
Liaise with growers and industry technical officers,

Requirements:
PhD in Plant Virology/Plant Pathology,
Minimum Five (5) years ’applicable post-doctoral research experience on diseases of subtropical crops or other relevant crops,
In depth knowledge of Plant Virology/Plant Pathology and molecular detection techniques applicable to this field,
Proven record of 12 peer reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences and symposia,
Proven record of accomplishment such that expertise and scientific standing is acknowledged at national level and moving towards the international level with a proven history of building national and international partnerships and networks
Proven record of accomplishment as being an invited national speaker and actively participating as a speaker internationally or being involved/invited as a participant in national/international events,
Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage,
Proven history of mentoring and supervising/co-supervising other researchers and students,
Proven history of strategic and operational planning skills and expertise,
Proven record of writing research proposals with positive funding outcomes,

Key Performance Areas:
Deliver technical assistance for research projects in the field of Plant Pathology,
Assist in coordinating of work activities and supervise allocated resources if applicable,
Plan own work activities, coordinate work activities and supervise allocated resources, if applicable,
Ensure cost-effective maintenance and utilisation of infrastructure through optimal application, maintenance, and effective stock control for execution of research projects,
Conducts research support, diagnostics, and other services,
Collects, captures and process data with basic analysis,
Regularly reports back through verbal/written reports to the supervisor and other project leaders on work activities and results,
Adhere to quality standards,
Assists in the preparation for presentations,
Provide input in the optimisation of new technologies,
Assist with the delivery of well-customised technology transfer/ training programs and effective transfer of technology and promotion in the form of products, services, literature, information days, training courses and other events according to client needs,

Requirements:
National Diploma or relevant NQF5 qualification from a recognised Institution with two years practical experience in Plant Pathology or related field,
2-year lab experience rendering support to research personnel,
Lab experience in the following fields, Plant Pathology, Microbiology or Plant Breeding (i.e. tissue culture),
Knowledge and experience in fruit tree and grapevine diseases as well as experience in Molecular Biology will be an added advantage,
Proficiency in MS Office Suite,
Valid SA driver’s license.

Key Performance Areas:
Performing the function in Supply Chain Management and the processing of transactions in line with the National Treasury regulations and ARC policies for purchase requisitions and issuing of purchase orders,
Handling of internal and/or external enquiries and communicating with all stakeholders and suppliers,
Compile and submit reports as required,
Invitation of quotations, processing of orders and follow of all processes related to such.
Requirements:
Bachelor degree/B-Com/National Diploma in Supply Chain Management specifically in Sourcing, Logistics, Supply Management or Purchasing Management,
Knowledge and understanding of Supply Chain Management policies and procedure with at least 1-2 years’ experience in public sector procurement,
Involvement on procurement and sourcing of goods and services,
Experience with tender processes, CIDB projects and capital equipment,
Knowledge and understanding of the PFMA and related policies and regulations,
Knowledge and understanding of maintenance, services and procurement of parts for various types of equipment,
Knowledge and understanding of contract administration,
Understanding the scientific research environment is an added advantage,
Ability to identify and resolve challenges in line with the policies and regulations,
Ability to use initiative and work independently and/or with the team,
Expediting purchase orders, assisting with international procurement and contract procurement,
Provide advice on the procurement of goods and/or services including sourcing methods,

PhD in Plant Pathology with 5 years’ post PhD experience in research on soilborne diseases with emphasis on molecular characterization and taxonomy,
Relevant experience in applied plant pathology, including planning and execution of glasshouse trials,
Proven record of root health analyses and product efficacy testing,
Proven record of peer-reviewed publications as main author or co-author in international journals,
A Track record of post-graduate student mentorship,
Track record of successful funding proposals,
Registration with relevant scientific registration body,
Valid code 08/EB driver’s licence.
