AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and fosters innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research campuses and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Natural Resources and Engineering (ARC-NRE) seeks to appoint highly experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions based in Arcadia & Silverton, Pretoria:
SPECIALIST RESEARCHER: GEOINFORMATICS (Arcadia, Pretoria)
Salary (R708 556 – R1 062 835 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
• Agricultural research and technology development,
• Evaluate research needs, develop, plan, and conduct research projects, which includes proper implementation and financial control,
• Submit project proposals and seek new clients in collaboration with other researchers and technicians,
• Optimally use and supervise human resources allocated to relevant projects,
• Technology transfer,
• Mentoring young scientists / technicians / postgraduate students and discharging duties in a multidisciplinary research team.
Requirements:
• PhD in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) or Remote Sensing / PhD in Natural Sciences with a strong background in GIS or Remote Sensing,
• At least eight (8) -ten (10) years post-PhD research experience and a minimum of twenty (20) relevant peer-reviewed publications,
• A good understanding of spatial natural resource datasets that exist for South Africa,
• Experience in crop statistics (MATLAB or other relevant statistical package), machine learning / artificial intelligence and crop modelling,
• Experience in programming, big data analytics, bush encroachment, alien invasive plant species and web-based systems development would be an added advantage,
• Proven track record of securing national and international external funding,
• Proven track record of building national and international partnerships and networks,
• Ability to work with rural communities and conduct fieldwork,
• Willingness to travel away from home for intermediate periods,
• Good communication skills (written and verbal),
• Valid driver’s licence (code 08/EB),
• Registration with PLATO or SACNASP (or evidence indicating that registration could be granted).

CHIEF RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: ANALYTICAL SERVICES

Salary (R479 675 - R719 514 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
• Carry out and supervise a range of soil analytical determinations,
• Compile analytical reports for clients,
• Invoicing on lab management systems,
• Monitor analytical standards and assist with ordering lab consumables,
• Write and update methods and validation documents,
• Assist with SANAS accreditation,
• Help to grow the Analytical Services unit,
• Provide relevant soil chemical inputs to research projects and related activities,
• Mentoring of junior staff and students / interns,
• Client liaison,
• Maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of equipment,
• Maintain high scientific standards for client service and SANAS accreditation.
Requirements:
• MSc Degree and ten (10) years practical experience / BTech- / N.Dip and twelve (12) years practical experience in a soil or related laboratory,
• Knowledge and experience with a variety of analytical equipment including ICP-OES and ICP-MS,
• Ability to work individually and as part of a team,
• Ability to mentor junior staff and students / interns,
• Experience of SANAS accreditation procedures would be an added advantage,

Requirements:
• Senior Certificate / Matric,
• Minimum of one (1) year lab experience,
• Knowledge of OHS regulations,
• Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office suite,
• Good analytical, report writing and organizational skills,
• Ability to take initiative,

Salary (R123 816 - R185 727 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
• Cleaning of laboratory and equipment in general,
• Handling of internal and/or external enquiries and communicating with all stakeholders and suppliers,
• Daily removal of all waste in laboratory using waste bags,
• Compile and submit analytical reports as required,
• Client liaison,
• Help to grow the Laboratory Services unit,
• Maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of equipment.
Requirements:
• Senior Certificate/Matric,
• One (1) year laboratory experience will be an advantage,

The ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC- OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Onderstepoort, Pretoria:
RESEARCH TECHNICIAN - DIAGNOSTIC SERVICE
Salary (R247 537 – R371 307 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
• To render a quality analytical/diagnostic service by performing microbiological tests on animal feeding stuff, food, food additives and water as well as molecular testing from Veterinary and food samples in accordance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025,
• These include but not limited to performing aerobic and anaerobic culture testing, Salmonella detection and serotyping, E. coli, coliform and faecal coliform detection and enumeration using Colilert test method for water, Listeria isolation and detection, Staphylococcus aureus enumeration, isolation and detection, Campylobacter species isolation and detection and PCR tests for detection of foodborne bacterial pathogens,
• Receiving and recording of samples details in record books and correctly storing samples,
• Registration of samples,
• Recording results in the appropriate results books and LabWare system,
• Assisting in the improvement and development of new test methods in collaboration with the Head of Laboratory,
• Providing research support by giving project input regarding technical detail and carrying out assigned technical tasks,
