The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa. 
 
The ARC-Central Office (ARC-CO) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Hatfield, Pretoria: 
 
SOCIAL SCIENTIST (THREE (3) YEARS FIXED-TERM CONTRACT) 
 
Key performance areas: 
 Provide expertise for quality research and analysis in the field of social science research and development. 
 Drive conceptualisation and implementation of multidisciplinary research projects and scaling of research for impact across the ARC. 
 Facilitate gender integration and inclusivity in R&D research and development projects across the ARC. 
 Evaluate research interventions of the ARC, to determine the impact of research and technology transfer effort. 
 Facilitate community engagement efforts in research projects, knowledge translation and communication of research outputs to a broad variety of stakeholders including policy makers. 
 Contribute to student supervision, mentoring and peer-support of colleagues. 
 Publish research in accredited peer reviewed journals. 
 
Requirements: 
 A PhD degree in Agricultural Economics, Sociology, Development Economics or another relevant Social Sciences field. 
 3-5 years’ relevant postgraduate work experience (can be before or after the PhD). 
 Proven capabilities for data analysis skills (can be qualitative or quantitative) and competency with related data analysis software.
 Evidence of ability to publish in peer reviewed journals (at least 3 peer-reviewed publications). 
 Sound understanding of the priorities and challenges facing the agricultural sector in South Africa. 
 Experience working multi, inter or trans-disciplinary teams. 
 A valid code EC1 Driver’s Licence. 
 
 
 
 
 
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER (THREE (3) YEARS FIXED-TERM CONTRACT) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Assists in developing and implementing appropriate governance standards that must be followed in the portfolio. 
 Defining business development and commercialisation opportunities for ARC R&D projects and enable a viable pipeline of projects across different technology readiness levels. 
 Conduct and/or liaise tech - economic evaluation to determine the commercial viability of IP and its value. 
 Assist with business plan and proposal writing, in conjunctions with the inventors, to access development funding. 
 Identifying market needs, analysing market information and business intelligence to align flagship projects within the relevant user environments and determine optimal commercialisation pathways for ARC R&D outputs. 
 Perform due diligence activities including financial statement analysis and document review and implement strategies that safeguard the organisation against contractual and commercial risk. 
 Facilitate the scaling and transfer of ARC technologies to the market in collaboration with relevant partners. 
 Undertake market research including benchmarking and provide analysis and advice on market and competitor trends as input into business decisions. 
 Develop technology packages (technology description, performance, competitiveness, market attractiveness, competing technologies, cost benefit/techno economics assessment, competitor profiling. 
 Suggest market penetration estimates based on technology competitiveness). 
 Provide support for spin-off companies and advise on business models for ARC commercialisation and business development ventures. 
 Lead and maintain industry and other stakeholder engagements to position the ARC as a competitive partner in agriculture research & technology developments, skills capacity development and provider of diagnostic and advisory services. 
 
Requirements: 
 A Bachelor of Business Administration Honours with at least 3-5 years’ experience. 
 Business development experience in industry. 
 Master’s degree in business management will be an added advantage. 
 Experience in policy development, programme implementation, business acumen and innovation within an innovation and technology-based environment. 
 Self-starters who can work on their own initiative. 
 Good communication skills and demonstrated experience working with teams comprising different backgrounds. 
 Project management experience and ability to adapt to evolving responsibilities is important. 
 A valid code EC1 Driver’s Licence.

SYSTEMS DEVELOPER 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Analyse user requirements. 
 Research, design and write new software programs. 
 System testing. 
 Make enhancements on the current applications.

 Develop new systems. 
 Undertake system maintenance and bug fixes. 
 Develop mobile applications. 
 Investigate and research new technologies and developments within the ICT environment. 
 
Requirements: 
 National Diploma/ Degree in Information Technology or Computer Science. 
 A minimum of 5 years’ experience in developing and maintaining web-based systems. 
 Strong skills in writing queries in one of the main Relational Database Management Systems (e.g MS SQL and Oracle). 
 Net programming experience (C#, ASP.NET, VB.NET) Knowledge of Oracle will be advantageous. 
 Strong PHP programming skills.

FINANCE ASSISTANT-ACCOUNTS PAYABLE 
 
Key Performance areas: 
 Receipt of invoices from campuses. 
 Review vendor invoices for accuracy such as name of the supplier, relevant vat number, price and quantity. 
 Ensuring that processing of invoices complies with VAT legislation. 
 Ensure signed GRN and invoices are attached and processed for payment. 
 Ensuring invoices are appropriately matched to purchase orders. 
 Filing and housekeeping. 
 Supplier are paid within agreed terms credit terms. 
 Manage the creditor’s age analysis. 
 Forward the remittances to suppliers. 
 Reconcile suppliers statement’s to accounts payable sub ledger. 
 Respond to suppliers queries within 48 hours and resolve within five working days. 
 Follow up on overdue invoices and reconciling items. 
 Clearing up of the GRN (liability) account. 
 Ability to work under pressure. 
 Adhere to deadlines especially weekly deadlines. 
 Build relationships with both Internal and External stake holders. 
 Provide adhoc assistance to Auditors and Management. 
 
Requirements 
 BCom Accounting, National diploma or equivalent qualifications with an extensive experience of 3 to 5 years in Accounts Payable section. 
 Knowledge of Excel. 
 Basic accounting and VAT knowledge.

The ARC-Tropical and Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions at Nelspruit in Mpumalanga Province: 
 
RESEARCH TEAM MANAGER: PLANT BREEDING 
Reporting directly to the Senior Manager Research, this position requires a hardworking and an experienced manager to lead the Crop Breeding team and be responsible for the overall management of crop breeding related research on citrus and subtropical fruits. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Initiates, coordinates and manages projects. Coordinates project plan with the Senior Manager. 
 Manages people within projects and ensures optimal utilisation. 
 Compiles and manages project budgets. 
 Ensure all projects within the Division are properly managed and to the accepted scientific and client standards. 
 Provide leadership with regard to research within the Institute. 
 Actively sources new national/ international research opportunities, assist with proposals writing. 
 Plans and coordinates research with single or multi-disciplinary team 
 Identifies and prioritises the need for resources (equipment and material) in project(s) and manages them accordingly 
 
Requirements: 
• PhD in Plant Breeding / Plant Genetics / Biotechnology or Molecular Breeding Horticulture or related discipline. 
• At least 10 years’ relevant post-PhD experience in the management of research teams. 
• Proven research and managerial record of accomplishment in the field of plant breeding related disciplines. 
• Proven record of accomplishment of applying biotechnology tools in plant improvement with the ability to develop a molecular breeding strategy for fruit crops. 
• International recognition in the field of plant germplasm conservation in order to establish innovative gene bank management strategies to meet global standards. 
• Minimum of 15 peer-reviewed scientific publications. 
• Proven experience in attracting externally funded projects. 
• Proven experience in human and financial management. 
• Proven experience in project and programme management. 
• Experience in networking with national and international clients, stakeholders and researchers. 
• Excellent interpersonal, project management, administrative and communication skills across all levels. 
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite. 
• Proven experience in report writing and compiling of presentations. 
• Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently. 
• Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage. 
• Programme and financial management, planning and organizing skills. 
• NRF rating will be an added advantage.
