AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Biotechnology Platform (ARC-BTP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Pretoria:
APPLICATION SPECIALIST: GENOMICS
Key Performance Areas:
• Support the operation of the Bioinformatics unit within the Biotechnology Platform,
• Manage the computational environment of the Biotechnology Platform in terms of an open platform and open source strategy,
• Develop and optimize bioinformatics and data analysis pipelines for next generation sequencing and genotyping data for diverse projects within the mandate of the ARC with special emphasis on precision and turnaround time,
• Provide support for systems management, programming, scripting and database management and LIMS to users of the Bioinformatics Unit,
• Maintain the LIMS, database and other ICT support needed by the Biotechnology research and core facilities units.
Requirements:
• MSc in Bioinformatics or BSc (Hons) in Bioinformatics with 3-5 years’ experience in bioinformatics programming,
• Demonstrate able programming and scripting skills,
• Ability to develop and work with databases (SQL),
• Knowledge/Experience in Next Generation Sequencing data will be an advantage,
• Experience working in a core facility environment and ability to interact with clients will be an advantage,
• Ability to interact with clients in a collaborative and consultative role,
• Knowledge and experience in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) will be an advantage.
