The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. The ARC-Deciduous Fruit, Vines and Wine (ARC-Infruitec-Nietvoorbij) seeks to appoint highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic persons to the following positions at Stellenbosch:

JUNIOR RESEARCHER: SOIL AND WATER SCIENCE 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Mainly conducts, coordinates and manage field experiments under the Soil and Water Science program focusing on soil cultivation, in compliance with set standards, client needs, within budget and on time. 
• Develop project proposals in line with strategic goals and research themes of the ARC. 
• Ensure that the allocated personnel and students are mentored, trained, utilized and evaluated in order to achieve the targets of the Programme and ultimately the ARC. 
• Contribute to the status of the ARC through high quality research findings/products in compliance with expected scientific standards. 
• Actively identify and pursue business opportunities and participates in the dissemination and marketing of information through national and international publications, conferences, and workshops. 
 
Requirements: 
• MSc in Soil Science, Agriculture or Horticulture. 
• Knowledge and experience on Tropical and Deciduous Fruits. 
• Understanding concept of soil conservation. 
• Project management, planning and organizing skills. 
• Knowledge in human capacity development and financial management. 
• Good written and verbal communication skills. 
• Ability to organize, prioritize and work systematically. 
• Experience in popular publications and report writing. 
• Desire to register for PhD. 
• A valid driver’s license. 
• Computer literacy.

HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT ADMINISTRATOR (TWELVE (12) MONTHS FIXED TERM CONTRACT) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Render and maintain quality Human Capital Administration services that conform to personnel needs and those of the ARC. 
• Ensure that all Human Capital Administration queries are dealt with in an accurate, timeous and in a professional manner. 
• Assist with effective coordination of performance management system. 
• Effectively coordinate the reconciliation process of Human Capital Management instruction to Payroll. 
• Render and maintain quality human resources benefit administration system. 
• Render and maintain quality Pension/Provident fund administration service. 
• Effective coordination: Coordinate the staff recruitment and selection process, i.e., prepare notice of the interviews, schedule, and coordinate interviews, conduct reference checks, prepare interview reports. 
• Provide Human Capital support for all Human Capital Management related activities. 
• Update employees’ information on the Human Capital system. 
• Assist in the coordination of the reconciliation process of Human Capital instructions to payroll. 
• Comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations. 
 
Requirements: 
• National Diploma in Human Resources Management or Equivalent. 
• Minimum 2 years HR administration experience. 
• Knowledge and understanding of relevant HR legislation, policies, and procedures. 
• Computer skills. 
• Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
• Fully bilingual.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT: OLIVES GENEBANK (READVERTISEMENT) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Maintenance/tending of plants in olive nursery. 
• Maintenance of irrigation system and scheduling of irrigation in olive nursery.
• Monitoring of pests and diseases in olive nursery. 
• Correctly and timely application of fungicides and pesticides and nutrition (foliar) in olive nursery. 
• Weed control in olive nursery and area surrounding nursery. 
• Prepare growth medium and filling plant bags. 
• Organise seedling plants in olive nursery according to groups. 
• Establishing plants in olive gene bank field blocks and reporting problems. 
• Pruning plants in olive gene bank field blocks as needed. 
• Timeous and accurate data collection. 
• Supervising work teams. 
• Provides research support and other services to researchers and technicians. 
• Performs routine activities independently or under supervision when needed. 
• Correct use of equipment according to specification and operating procedure. 
• Responsible to keep equipment and work area neat and clean. 
• Ensures compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures. 
 
Requirements: 
Grade 12. 
Experience and practical knowledge of olive growing, and production will be preferred / added advantage. 
Experience working in nurseries and with young plants. 
Knowledge of common olive pests and diseases. 
Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office suite. 
Must be able to carry heavy crates, fertilizer bags etc. 
Must be willing to travel. 
Excellent interpersonal skills. 
Ability to organise and work systematically. 
Valid driver’s licence is recommended.

TRACTOR DRIVER X2 (BIEN DONNE RESEARCH FARM AND ROBERSTON RESEARCH FARM) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Working on a tractor with various implements. 
• Ensure proper soil preparation is done accurately, timeously and in a professional manner. 
• Safe transportation of workers, farm produce, fertilizers, and other farm equipment. 
• Pruning, suckering, canopy management and harvesting of fruit trees/vineyards. 
• Basic maintenance of the tractor, implements, irrigation and trellis systems. 
• Reporting of any symptoms of defects and breakages on the tractor and implements. 
• Time management with execution of individual & team tasks. 
• Record keeping of day-to-day work done, diesel usage, spraying programs. 
• Assist with general farm work. 
• Comply with all requirements of the OHS Act. 
 
Requirements: 
• Grade 10 
• 3-5 years’ experience as a tractor operator. 
• Good reading and writing skills. 
• Valid B Drivers Licence is to your advantage.
